For the slow people, re-write the question as "48/2 * (9 +3)" and that should clear up any confusion.

2(9 +3) is the same as 2(12), which is equivalent to 2 * 12. How would you solve 48 / 2 * 12?

no it isnt

if u dont get rid of the brackets it becomes 12, and u can solve. There is no need to get rid of the brackets.

48÷2*(12) = 24 * (12) = 288

then you just solve from left to right.

Distribution is taught to apply before multiplication and division. If you distribute the 2 the parentheses is in the denominator. If you dont its separate. PEMDAS does not clearly define this scenario.

Which symbol doesn't excel recognize?

the one not on our keyboards otherwise i would have typed it...the makes sense since it is not a key or function of any keys on a standard keyboard why would it be recognized....

Yes it does. Multiplication and Division are the same rank, the same way addition and subtraction are the same rank. When they are the same rank, you calculate from left to right.

distribuiton is really not necessary in lower level mathematics....its not something that has to be done whether you do it or not the answer is going to be the same is why pemdas doesnt address it....i.e.
2(4+8) is the same 2x4 +2x8=24

I called it a "math troll" for a reason.

The fraction version is the one with the straightforward solution.

But you won't understand what I mean by that.

I assume that / denotes a fraction as in the 2(9+3) is in the denominator

So 48
------
2(9+3)

Reduce and it becomes just 24/12 which is 2

or i could be wrong but this is how i did it

48/2 (9+3) =
48/2 (12) =
48/24 =
2

or i did it this way also

But yeah, you follow BEDMAS/PEMdAS

48/2(9+3)

BRACKETS/PARENTHESIS FIRST,

48/2(12)

After this, those brackets are simply a multiplication symbol, so you can rewrite as:
48/2x12

At this point you follow BEDMAS and go left to right
48/2 = 24

Then you have 24(12) or 24x12

= 288

i still think it's 288

You get 2 if you multiply before you divide but division and multiplication are on the same bracket in PEMDAS.

Since the division sign is before the multiplication sign you divide first. The rule is to go left to right.
