My actuary friend is telling me the real difference here is what will determine the answer.

48÷2(9+3) = 2

48/2(9+3) = 288

For reasons I cant explain the division symbol makes the difference here. Something about the non-traditional symbol having more implications with the denominator not being inclusive of the problem. He also said this is one of the worst written problems he has ever seen lol. Definite troll problem.

2(9+3) has to be multiplied first (you could just add what's in the parenthesis, but ya gotta go through the steps)

2 x 9= 18 and 2 x 3= 6

18+6= 24

the (original) question is what is 48 divided by 2x9 + 2x3 (which "we" have figured out was 24)

So 48 divided by 24 is what?

*Gold star for me*

lol i got the opposite as him for that problem.

The bottom i would read it as 48 is the numerator with 2(9+3) being the denominator. Guess he reads it as 48/2 being a fraction, multiplying (9+3)

In a nutshell he says 48÷2(9+3) would read as 48 OVER 2(9+3) where 48/2(9+3) reads 48/2 * (9+3)

The answer is 2

48/2(9+3)=

You first add whats in the parenthesis, which is 9+3. Once you get 12 you still have to get rid of the parenthesis. Since 2 is directly connected to the parenthesis, then you multiply 2 times 12 and get 24. Then division is left so you divide 48 by 24 and end up with 2.

uh no. 48/2 is like a seperate entity. its not just a 48 and a 2. its one whole thing. and you dont just multiply the denominator of something without doing anything with the numerator. if you had like 1/2 (4) the answer isnt going to be 1/8. thats basically what youre doing. WRONG.
