48/2(9+3) = 2...
major pain;2358669 said:People coming up with 288 arent "solving" the Parentheses first.
In order to solve it you have to distribute the 2 first. So, 2(9+3) = 18+6 = 24
48/24 = 2

when there aren't anymore equations to solve within the brackets, then you move on to the next available solving step. In which case, would be Multiplication/division.
major pain;2358706 said:You're interpreting it wrong.
The parentheses dont go away by adding 9+3.
It doesnt go away until there are no factors outside the parentheses. The 2 being there modifies whatever is in the parentheses. 48/2(12) = 48/24
major pain;2358727 said:The 2 will factor into whats in the parentheses.
ImGettingOld;2358571 said:48÷2(9+3)
2*9=18 2*3=6
18+6=24
48/24=2
That's the long way

major pain;2358742 said:Because you are separating 48/2 and multiplying it by (9+3) you will come up with 288.
Again.
48/2(9+3) is different from 48/2 * (9+3)
PLASTIC RULES;2358738 said:No because 2(12) is the same thing as 2*12.
major pain;2358736 said:Break this down.
48/2(9+3)
1. 2(9+3) = (2*9+2*3) = (18 + 6) = (24) NOW the parentheses go away
2. 48/(24) or 48/24
3. 2
major pain;2358750 said:When there is a number DIRECTLY outside the parentheses, that number factors in.
Why would a 2 factor into the parenthesis alone, when it's 48/2 and not just 2? 48/2 would factor in.major pain;2358727 said:The 2 will factor into whats in the parentheses.
Young-Ice;2358752 said:@ the bolded... you are doing the steps wrong. you don't multiply then divide, you do the multiplication/division in whatever order they come in from left to right,
