I interpret 48/2(x) as (48/2)*(x), 48/2*(x) or just 48/2x, they all end up being 24x.sboogie;2358618 said:so you interpret 48/2x as meaning (48/2)(x)?

major pain;2358669 said:People coming up with 288 arent "solving" the Parentheses first.
In order to solve it you have to distribute the 2 first. So, 2(9+3) = 18+6 = 24
48/24 = 2
It seems you're implying that multiplying 48/2 by x is somehow different than multiplying (48/2) by x or (48/2) by (x).major pain;2358675 said:That's where you its different. Unless specifically stated then you shouldnt add the parentheses yourself.
Young-Ice;2358690 said:exactly. and as such, you don't multiply the 2 with the 12 during brackets phase. you wait until multiply/divide phase

multiply and divide are really one phase of the solving process. You dont do them in order that they come in according to pedmas, you do them in order that you see them from left to right in the equation.
in the case of this equation, you'd divide 48 by 2, and then multiply it by 12.
