I'm glad these sales are shitty. When hip hop gave up on the vinyl and cassette formats it wrote its own death certificate. Rock and its subgenres still press records and tapes and they sell like hot cakes. This whiteboy I used to work with got a band and them dudes can sell 150-300 copies hand to hand in one weekend of this so called dead format. Cassettes are cheaper than CDs to mass produce and turn to profit. Vinyl is costly but it sells itself based on sound quality and presentation. Hip Hop is an analog culture. DJs are supposed to spin real vinyl and release mixtapes on cassette. Rock music hasn't gave up the guitar but Hip Hop has given up the turntable.

One thing i think that is hurting album sales is mixtape sells. If you body a mixtape you really have to step your game up. Even if you have a so so mixtape your album better have some shit that is napalm for the album for a nigga to buy it.

I mean look at Ross his mixtape had more buzz than any single off GFID not name sophisticated. Now if he has tracks that bang like sophisticated more niggas will buy the album.

Look at a nigga like 50 cent who just dropped a mixtape to meh acclaim. Again if he wants his albums off shelf's (outside gee running in a store and burning the shelves) then his album will really have to stand out and have some crazy joints on them otherwise it will flop.

Same goes for my nigga meek. DC2 is bumping more than rosses mixtape around where i live and the places i visit for work. However his album better tell a good ass story of dreams and nighmares otherwise he gon see low numbers.

Mixtapes good or bad are something you can get for free. If you expect niggas to pay for your album (without whitewashing and poping out your music) you need to really come with shit that is well above mixtape quality.

folk complicate shit. sales are down cuz tapes/cd are no longer the only way to listen to music.... everyone and they moma got a computer. all computers come with cd burners. most car radios now play mp3s and u can hook ur mp3 player to ur car. hell many have usb cords too.... why spend 10-20 dollars when u can download and listen to it at times up to 2 weeks before its out in the store.... everyone is their own bootleg man. honestly outside of gifts for kids why would u buy music? thats why artist focus more on singles and other aspects to make money. only a handful of artist sell now anyway.
