No Suge Knight mentions?

Only thing controversial that Suge done was throwing shots at Bad Boy at the 1995 Source awards. Other than that he's not controversial, he used to be feared perhaps, but not controversial. In fact, Suge was a pretty low-key guy up until late 1994.

Suge was controversial but he wasn't a threat to the establishment, he was Jimmy Iovines favorite ni99er.

Millions of teenagers were not inspired by the words of Suge Knight, therefore he was not deemed controversial by the powers that be.

Suge Knight. Started Death Row, the most notorious hip hop label of all time. Supposable hung vinilla ice over a balcony. Brought the streets and gang culture into hip hop. Has assaulted several people in and out the industry. Rumored to have Pac & Big murked (I don't believe so, at least not Pac) amongst other things.

Pac. Pac, got shot, went to jail, #1 albums, murdered, then debated if he really died. There is no one else close

You could make a case for a lot of people, depends on what you want to emphasize in your definition/calculation of controversy. My short list is probably: Suge, Eminem, Tupac, Ice Cube, Luther Campbell/2 live crew, and Ice T.

Dr. Dre.....guilty by association. Dre has been in or around some of the most controversial figures in hip hop history including....

NWA

2Pac

Eminem

50 Cent

Suge Knight

Snoop

Without Dre we wouldn't even have Eminem, 50, or Snoop for sure and you can make a case that Death Row wouldn't be Death Row without Dr. Dre

Easily Dr Dre... With is dealings with Eazy E, Ice Cube, Above the Law, DOC, beating D. Barnse's ass and Ruthless Records... Suge, Harry-o, Snoop, ect and Deathrow Records... Aftermath and Eminem... 50 cent and G-unit.

You could make a mini-series that would come on tv every night mon- fri for two weeks about Dr Dre, N.W.A, Ruthless, ect and still wouldn't cover all the controversial shit Dre's been involved in.

You got controversial albums... sample lawsuits... Beat downs... a witness to beat downs... domestic abuse charges... shady contracts... questionable production credits... jail time for assault... Extortion charges... ect.

Yall gotta understand Dre has been in the rap game making "Hits" since what...1987.

That's a lot of years for some controversial shit to happen. LOL

And if not Dre it would have to be Pac....

Ice Cube.

He went at the Cracka, the white-Jew, the Korean, the pork-chop preacher-man, the KKK, the LAPD, Uncle Sam, the house-Negro, and the devil.

Ice Cube had Khalid Muhammad on his songs and in his videos, he aligned himself with the NOI, and formed the Lench Mob.

He married a Black woman and raised 3 sons and a daughter while making his own record label and movie-production company after shaking a crooked white-Jew.

Ice Cube never lost sight of who the enemy was even when he fell out with NWA.

His entire identity is spitting in the face of white supremacy.

And we can now close the thread.

Cube is the GOAT, he actually got a letter from the FBI for his song Fuck the Police...My vote goes to Cube, Eminem would be high up there too.

Federal agents officially asked rap pioneers N.W.A to stop recording after receiving a slew of complaints about their expletive-laden lyrics. In an essay written for Flaunt magazine, group co-founder Arabian Prince reveals he and bandmates Ice Cube and Eazy-E received letters from F.B.I. officials asking them to stop releasing hardcore rap music.

Prince - real name Mik Lezan - recalls, "(They told us) to stop recording such music... Upon our arrival at every airport terminal, we received a visit from the police reminding us not to use profanity onstage in their town, or face going to jail."

But the Straight Outta Compton rap supergroup refused to acknowledge the threat against them - because they felt they were on a free-speech mission.

The rapper writes, "N.W.A is best known for the fight for freedom of speech and expression."

In 1992, as a result of the album's controversy, the state of Oregon declared any display of Ice Cube's image in retail stores throughout the state illegal. This ban also included advertisements for St. Ides Malt Liquor, which Ice Cube endorsed at the time.[22] In the September 2006 issue of FHM, Ice Cube stated in an interview that he did not regret the controversial statements made on the album. Regarding the offense caused to Koreans, he said, "If there's still a problem, it's their problem."[citation needed] Due to fear that laws against racial incitement in the United Kingdom could see the album banned, the United Kingdom release removed the tracks "Black Korea" and "No Vaseline." Island Records, the distributor of this version of the album, deleted these tracks with the consent of Priority Records, but not Ice Cube himself.[15] However, these tracks do feature on this album in the present day.

I would say Cube and Pac.

They were involved in damn near everything in The 90's.

They spoke their minds and people didn't like that, they didn't give a fuck.

Pac was born into it, his mother was a Black Panther that was facing years in prison, she was her own lawyer and she beat the system.

Pac's stepdad was a top soldier in The Black Panthers, his godfather was a top general in The Black Panthers.

Dude was already controversial before he was even born and everything he did or went through after he was famous was controversial.

Ice Cube came in the game with The Most Controversial Group in Hip Hop History, he co-wrote one of the most controversial hip hop songs ever, he left the group with controversy, he put out albums that was full of controversy, he linked up with The Nation, he started from the bottom with his own label and movie company, he saw the writing on the wall in N.W.A. before Dre finally realized it, he was in another controversial group, Westside Connection and they didn't give a fuck either.

Cube is comfortable in himself to do movies like Are We There Yet, Are We Done Yet, Barbershop and Barbershop 2 and still put out that real hip hop.

My vote goes to Ice Cube and Tupac Shakur.

Y'all must not understand how disliked Jay-Z really is. Tompetrez really isn't a unique figure, I know a lot of people who HATE Jay-Z as much as he does

Ice Cube, Pac, Public Enemy, and Eminem are definitely up there. I think Cube easily got this though. Other honorable mentions:

Nas- caused a stir within the Hip Hop community by naming his album Hip Hop Is Dead, caused more controversy with Nigger, the Jesus line from "Live At The BBQ" was controversial, O'reilly attacked him for "Shoot 'Em Up", there's the "I'm like Sadaam Hussein looking at his dead grand children's burnt remains" was controversial back in '03, Summer Jam '02, the XXL cover of him burning the different magazine covers

Even if Jay's the most hated figure on planet Earth, it doesn't make him controversial. Controversial doesn't mean that people hate you, it means that society disagrees with something that you've said or done. It can get heated to the point of hate, but it stems from something that a person has said or done not just disliking something or someone just because.

Then again, Jay Z doesn't seem like someone who is socially awkward either. He doesn't seem uncomfortable in social settings, he's not really reclusive, and he doesn't really go overboard to avoid social situations.
