I guess it depends on what circles you run in. Em never got play where I'm from. He was considered corny for the most part.
Nas was considered the best rapper at that time, so we were all eyes and ears at whatever sun was doing. I feel like this comparison is a smack in the face to the Hip-Hop culture. We're putting up a pop-tart sometimes rapper against our super elite.
Comuthafuckinsign!
In the circles I was in, we bumped Nas, Jay, Cam'ron, D-Block. Immortal Techinique was out around that time. I was living in MA but I was going back and forth to New York and picking up Kay Slay tapes. He always had a Saigon freestyle and a Papoose freestyle on his tapes. The only time I ever remember hearing anything from Eminem was on MTV2. They used to play the hell out of Eminem's videos. He had one song I liked, Sing For The Moment, but otherwise I never heard anything from him I liked. I thought he was cheesy.
In fact, I had a video show on the community access station in my hometown. I used to call the record labels in New York to get music videos. I remember I used to play Thugz Mansion by Nas and Tupac. I also played the Sing For The Moment video. That's the time frame I'm talking about. Another video I used to play was Get By by Talib Kweli.

Sales and media coverage wise (not that it matters) Em takes it, music wise it's tough for me to call because they were both on top form in 02, plus Em had more material than Nas, he had the Em show and the 8mile soundtrack, Nas had Gods Son which is a great album, fuck it I am going to call it a draw.
@ the bolded. What planet were you living on in 2002? Nas dropped Stillmatic in Dec 2001, Lost Tapes in Sep 2002 and God's Son in Dec 2002. Thats three albums in 12 months.
People always say that Eminem's first three albums were GOAT and then he started to fall off. Those 3 albums Nas released in that 12 month time span annihilate the 3 albums that Eminem released; SSLP, MMLP and TES from 99-02
Stillmatic, Lost Tapes, God's Son >>> SSLP, MMLP and The Eminem Show as far as beats and rhymes.
