I believe when the thread starter said "popular," he means just that. Popular...famous...well known.

No one has ever reached Michael Jackson's popularity status. He was, by far, the most famous person walking on planet Earth. There are superstars. Mike was a supernova. There were people living in huts in east Uganda without electricity or running water who knew how to Moonwalk. With regard to online news coverage, Michael Jackson's death received MORE coverage than 9/11. It was the second most covered news story EVER. It was second only to the 2008 electing of our first black president.

Michael Jackson dropping a new music video has resulted in networks interrupting your daily broadcast to premiere it. There is no announcement that Michael Jordan could make that will interrupt a football game or a sitcom. We will never see this kind of phenomenon again.
