What's all this hype about Illmatic? I fail to see what's so good about the album apart from its lyrics. Do backpackers forget that there's more to an album than just lyrics? What about production, length, impact, influence, and replay value? Illmatic's beats didn't age well and they sound like they were produced in a basement. It Takes A Nation, Str8 Outta Compton, Amerikkkaz Most Wanted, and Death Certificate (which is Cube's best, in my opinion) are easily as good as Illmatic. People need to destroy the myth that Illmatic is the best rap album of all time. Only the purists/backpackers think this. Better albums came before it, and better albums came after it.

3. The only thing commercial about Ready To Die was the three singles. Everything else in the album was hardcore street shit. Although Ready To Die doesn't have superior lyrics, it did have better production, more replay value and more classic songs than Illmatic; overall, Ready To Die was a better album. Ready To Die is held in high regard by the streets and critics.

Rakim could be successful, but he needs to adapt to the times. but if he were to adapt and change, he would have to switch up his subject matter/style/etc., and it wouldnt be the same legendary Rakim

I don't even think Rakim himself even gives 2 shits about going platinum. If he did, I must of skipped over the 5 guest appearances by Lil' Wayne, The Gucci Mane spot, the 8 T-Pain hooks and those several Nitti beats he had on The Seventh Seal.

Also, the threadstarter referred to Rakim as a "Dinosaur" yet the nigga is only 2 years older than Jay-Z. go figure.
