1. With the right promotion and some big names, definately yes!

2. Co-Sign

3. Rakim and maybe Public Enemy, otherwise no one has a better than illmatic.

4. LOL

1. Rakim tried to go mainstream under Dre in 2002, but nothing ever happened.

2. It Takes A Nation changed the game and had a bigger impact than Illmatic ever had. There's no question it's better than Illmatic.

Negro please?...you are wrong again!

1. Paid in Full

2. Illmatic

3. It takes a nation

4. Cube' best is Amerikkas most wanted, not Death Certificate

5. Ready to Die

6. Chronic

7. Reasonable Doubt

What's all this hype about Illmatic? I fail to see what's so good about the album apart from its lyrics. Do backpackers forget that there's more to an album than just lyrics? What about production, length, impact, influence, and replay value? Illmatic's beats didn't age well and they sound like they were produced in a basement. It Takes A Nation, Str8 Outta Compton, Amerikkkaz Most Wanted, and Death Certificate (which is Cube's best, in my opinion) are easily as good as Illmatic. People need to destroy the myth that Illmatic is the best rap album of all time. Only the purists/backpackers think this. Better albums came before it, and better albums came after it.

smh. Make sure you don't ever call yourself a hip hop head.

1. Ice cube went plat with amerikkkaz most wanted in 1990. "regardless of very limited promotion, and airplay, the album shipped 500,000 copies in its first two week out, and was certified platinum one month later." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/amerikkka's_most_wanted what does this have to do with rakim goin plat in 86 when hardly no rap acts at all had ever went platinum?? Did you even read the post??

2. I live in my own house and i'm on my own laptop. The quicker you accept this the better. we have already agreed to disagree ... Im convinced about your living situation

3. Reasonable doubt would have seen the light of day through can't knock the hustle. Very successful single. no ... There's no merit behind this statement. The point is, dead presidents is what put the album/jay'z career on peoples radar. The rest is speculation

4. Ready to die received 5 mics and universal acclaim just like illmatic. More replay value, more songs and better production. Illmatic is better lyrically, but overall, ready to die >>>>> illmatic. so what?? Lol illmatic is still held to a higher regard, why do you keep arguing commercial appeal??

nas might have ethered hov, but nas signed to and worked for the god five years later; therefore, hov won the war. do you need me to find the quote where jay z said that nas doesnt work for him??? In all seriousness .... If your false idol jay z tells you this, will you beleive it or keep going on and on even tho you were proven wrong?? Nas wasnt even signed to rocafella .... He was signed to def jam. Jay z had no ceo status at def jam .... He was just an employee too. He had no ownership

now we can close thread.

yes we can .................

1. I said Cube went platinum in 1990. Your reply: "im gonna need you to prove this." I just proved it.

2. The God was already getting exposure in 1994 through his street hit I Can't Get With That.

3. The only thing commercial about Ready To Die was the three singles. Everything else in the album was hardcore street shit. Although Ready To Die doesn't have superior lyrics, it did have better production, more replay value and more classic songs than Illmatic; overall, Ready To Die was a better album. Ready To Die is held in high regard by the streets and critics.

4. Hov fucked Nas' baby mother and left condoms on Nas' babys car seat. Nas then signed to a label that Hov became President of a year later, which means Jay won the war. Hov owned Nas.

RE>>>>>Illmatic?????

relax that notion.

Rakim could be successful, but he needs to adapt to the times. but if he were to adapt and change, he would have to switch up his subject matter/style/etc., and it wouldnt be the same legendary Rakim

Who cares? As long as the music is dope.
I don't even think Rakim himself even gives 2 shits about going platinum. If he did, I must of skipped over the 5 guest appearances by Lil' Wayne, The Gucci Mane spot, the 8 T-Pain hooks and those several Nitti beats he had on The Seventh Seal.

Also, the threadstarter referred to Rakim as a "Dinosaur" yet the nigga is only 2 years older than Jay-Z. go figure.
