what about santana?

He wasnt shit till Oh boy and Hey ma..a few freestyles and feature..he wasnt nobody til dipset and that was 02...dont even remember his other group draft pick.

We thought he could spit and he had a distinct flow..his first cd beats was bannanas but dipset fans were CRAZY back then they were seriously popular in the streets but not mainstream..Juelz almost hit the mainstream off his second had a lot of hits but that was 05-06 he aint been the same since then..

You know how paved the way for Drakes faggotry?Nelly..Before him Drake could not have existed..Closest you got to a respected singer in Rap form was R.Kelley and Nate Dogg.No way Drake would have survived in current form before 99.

AND remember what you did outside the both used to matter, kissin men, being c.o.'s,being a jew from canada was not gonna fly.

Look up BOSS and see what happened to her and the Easy E and Dre picture incident..Were suprised Dre even survived that.Street credibility was neccesary back then...

dude here is droppin real shit..boss was droppin some hits back in 93 but got her career ruined once people found out she was fraudin and i think the only reason dre got by that shit was cause of the chronic and death row was too big when eazy pulled that..truth be told eazy took some l's back then too

Wow when you really compare shit from 92-01 to 02-to k11 shit is sad..man..damn..lol...10 years ago rap was everywhere, video games tv shows, movies like Belly Backstage Paid in full ,mid level rappers were going platinum..I remember all the fashion ads, xxls and sources used to be small phone book size on their summer specials cuz of all the ads..All the labels, the fashion endorsments and labels.Ruff Denim,4life(cash money)Willie Escoe(lol)Sean John,Rocawear,Phat Farm..Hip Hop was a real industry closing out the millenium and starting it..2 years later we got the ying yang twins stink up the place and legendary rapper on fucking KOCH with no videos.

..I dont wanna start no shit but I blame that southern crunk shit...not TI and them but crunk really lost peoples attention and the laziness in lyrics and subject matter crept in...since Lil Jon started doing his coonery shit aint been the same...

Well im only 22 but my brother got me into hip-hop early i just remember the artist i listien to the most ,,pac,big,wu-tang,bonethugs,dmx,dmx,nas,jay-z Az.big pun I hated no limit i thought that shit was corny as fuck but i loved the old cashmoney, I remember

the black eyed peas before they sold out they where extra corny and boring there video put me to sleep.um what else rap videos didnt solely rely on Video hoes, there was alot more individuality, mtv played that big hypnotize video sooo fuckin much till this day a image of diddy and big on a boat is burned into my head

I think everybody new the first verse if hi my name is

I sang crossroads-Bone thugs in harmony every time he video came on, That song didnt have meaning to me until my grandpops died a couple of years back , i will never ever listen to that song again, i did not know who that dude with the jerry curl was in the end of the video was at all

I always skipped the nas street dreams video because of that lame pink suit

it was od exciting when my brother brought some new Hotshit home like the chronic2001 the purple tap{only built for cuban lynx raekwon the tape was actually purple HOT FIRE!!!!!!} shit was crazy when a album came out . its used to me my bro and at least 3-4 of his friends in the room listening to to a new pac tape or wu tape,we always had a sound system in our room I honestly don't know how i was allowed in there in the first place way to young to be hearing 90's gangsta rap

I remember we went crazy on that one pac song when you hear " suge shot me" we had to replay it like 50 times because we didn't believe what we heard it"

shit was mad raw back then not full of estrogen like todays rap

Probably big as Ross is today, not quite on the A level stars level ( Biggie, Tupac, Snoop,Dre,etc level ) but had a good enough following to be a consistently gold artist.

thread has been killed on first page from comparing Ross career to Redman SMH

Man I remember concerts where it was everybody there. And it was nothing for the rapper to let the DJ get his shine and do at least a 5 minute set showcasing his skills. Niggas I seen live do that crazy shit was Dj Jazzy Jeff, Kid Capri, Mister Mixx from 2 Live Crew, DJ Whiz from Kid & Play, MC Lytes dj K -Rock, Maceo from De La Soul, and many more. But in the middle of they set in the concert they'd unleash the dj to do his thing. I don't think they do that anymore

I'm pretty young myself but i think i got into hip-hop around 1995-1996, i remember watching and hearing "Killing Me Softly" and "Ready Or Not", "Gangsta's Paradise", "California Love" and probably a few others. The thing is i grew up on music very very early like i remember loving "Smooth Criminal" and a bunch of MJ songs early on i was a huge fan of his, i remember listening to a few Whitney joints and all kinds of shit, i was a music head very very early but i was always a kid who could differenciate pop shit and "real" shit no matter if it was hip-hop, r&b or anything like that.

But around 1997-1998 is when i got more and more into it with hot joints from Biggie, Busta to older Dre, Snoop and etc songs, i started "diggin' in the crates" more sorta speak. But around 1998-1999/2000 i was officially a hip-hop head from artists like Dre, Xzibit, Snoop, DMX, Method Man, Busta, Lauryn and many many more. I even remember when Eminem first came out with "My Name Is" and i thought he was like a satire rapper like a Weird Al Yankovic type dude until "Guilty Conscience" were i was like "okay, the video dope and the song dope..he's cool" but then when "Stan" and "The Way I Am" came out i started to respect him more and more, not that i'm a big fan of his.

Aha, there we go. I was 20 when it dropped, cats was bumping the shit out of that album. His rhyme from "Live At the BBQ" had niggas waiting on him to drop, he had a buzz and I was in Cali when that shit dropped too.

I think he might be kinda right about Nas. Nas around illmatic was like a Gucci(i know) if he later found the success of a T.I or Wayne. Well known on the streets, mainstream doesn't quite know him but there's rumblings(hip hop wasn't as mainstream back then tho). IWW was what made Nas a Hip Hop mainstream act. It's funny because the whole genre wasn't really mainstream yet, so that's how you could have artist selling millions of records yet America not know them.

Also for the record Biggie did bring the East Back. NaS and Wu did get the ball rolling but quality wasn't the issue for New York. The Fact is between LL's "Mamma said knock you out" which was released in 90, no New York solo emcee went Platinum. New York was in a serious sales drought after all the success from the 80's. Beastie Boys, Tribe, Onyx and Black Sheep saw success as groups but none of them were able to stop Dre and Snoop's as well as Death Row's takeover. It wasn't until "Ready To Die" dropped that all changed. Not only was it the most success solo album for a New York Rapper, it literally shifted the sound of Hip Hop at that time and open the door for other New York Emcees to flourish. So "36 chambers and ILLmatic" started the camp fire, Biggie threw gasoline on it.

I agree. Wu and Nas got it started, letting you know there was new blood but Biggie was the punch that most people didn't see coming and he truley blew up(took the Wu a while and Nas). IWW did solidified the East being back, Big could have been 1 and done but I think IWW was the first NY solo hip hop album to be instant double plat.

False. He was hip hop from around the time of the robbery and sex case he was already huge but he survived them shots and went to prison.beefed with big and signed to death row.

.like i said it was all snoop pac and big the world of hip hop at that time til he died..Then Nas switched his style and became mega popular,Fugees at the time were globablly popular like crazy insanley popstart populars..Jay Z was a res[ected new cat in the game, the Wu tang was a movment with side crews that had side crews,by late 98 Jay became the Jay Z of today and the south was started to come out on top with Timbaland,Missy,No Limit,Cash money took em too a new level the changed the whole style of dress for cats down south and influenced peoples slang and videos..DMX then Ja Rule had a short run on top..the 50 came along and took it back to the streets for about two minutes, then some more south and regional movements(hyphy, crunk, snap) bs..all been southern dominated IMO since 99 even..Cats acting like this is new south been shitting on the game for more than 10 years...

Pac really became infamous after getting shot up and that leading to the East vs West drama. He went from a cool 1million units being sold to multi platinum.

Also I consider Timbaland and Missy to be more East Coast than the Dirty south. When you think of them what artist do you think in association? Jay-z, Aaliyah, Nas, Busta, etc. Also I see people try to re write history to say the south been running the games since the 90's but that just wasn't true. The south had clicks that ran in burst, almost always never truly respected, and then fizzle out. The south didn't really takeover until 06 and I would say it started to cool off late 2010. You could consider the southern scene back then as alternative but the game was mostly NY and LA

anybody that grew up in the 90's, who would u compare Nas' hype from 92-94 to now?

J. cole with less forced promise but way more pressure. Then again Cole probably had more pressure to sell while people wanted Nas to be the GOAT.

You got to remember rap was much united back then. All those artist like Fresh Prince, Queen Latifah, Heavy D, Public Enemy, etc use to tour with each other and were good friends. Hiphop was still on the come up and that's was before all the money came into the game and changed things. A win for hiphop back then was a good thing

Will Smith was viewed as a little corny but in a good way. The Show was huge even tho Will could not act at the time.

I'm glad you brought this up. That is my problem with alot of todays new so called "DJ's". You got cats out today calling themselves Dj's and can't even mix 2 records together or even scratch. The shit is sad. Dj's get absolutly no shine today and that is not right because its one of the original elements of hip-hop. Hassan i'm younger than you but i remember a time when artists were approachable. I remember going to the park jams and it was nothing to see Biz, Marley, Shan, De LA, LONS and many others be there among the people and it was all love. Rakim would actually show up at the annual Wyandanch Day and park his benz in the park and chill. You could walk up to him and dap him up and it was all love. For the most part artists where just regular cats with the gift of being able to MC. It was easy to relate to them because they were alot like you. These days every rapper claims they are already rich and superstar before they ever stepped foot in the booth.

Good thread BTW. I hope to contribute a little more.
