Here's my Top 5 (In no particular order):

Jay

Em

Nas

Black Thought

Rakim

I can't figure out why people say Em need to put in work, yet they throw Big's name around like his catalog's 10 albums deep. To me, that just means people jump on a bandwagon, and ride it as far as they can. Waitin for the debate...

What does it matter to you if people have Em in their top 5? I mean, it's their top 5, now isn't it??? Everyone has a different opinion about certain things. Agree to disagree... You making them look "stupid" isn't really going to work because their top 5 is theirs and your top 5 is yours. Everyone has a different top 5, top 10 and etc... I got Em in my top 5 but should that really get you all worked up because somebody has a "white boy" on that list??? Whoever is in yours, that's you. I ain't gonna shit on it, because it's not my list.

My "TOP 5"... Actually fuck it here's my top 10.

1.) Rakim
2.) Pac
3.) Eminem
4.) Ice Cube
5.) Jay-Z
6.) Nas
7.) Biggie
8.) Redman
9.) Masta Ace
10.) Lupe Fiasco

Well umm were on a Hip-Hop forum designed for discussion.

I swear people appear more retarded everyday.

Lupe is a better pure lyricist then eminem?

Of course spitting multis is relatively easy, double entendres and complexed metaphors are not.

Lupe is probably the best lyricist in the game right now.

Well thats not me, Big ain't in my Top 10 for that very reason.

If were talking catalogue there are several rappers with better catalogues than Em imo.

If were talking technical skills there are rappers just as good or better than him as well.

Yet i rarely see Pharoahe Monch, Talib Kweli or even Black Thoguht in peoples top 5s.

Well I didn't see anything "retarded" with my post. I can just tell with how you have a discussion, the other person is always wrong. It just seems like it's wrong for people to put Em in their top 5 or top 10, or wherever you wanna rank him. I understand that this is a Hip-Hop forum designed for discussion. Thus discuss.

If you break it down like that , almost every artist is going to have someone better at a certain aspect (catalogue, technical skills, etc.)Its how well you are overall at all areas combined . I know a guy from highschool who is probably has more complex rhymes than eminem but I wouldnt listen to a cd from him if it was free. IMO eminem is not the GOAT but I would say hes at least top ten.

Which is why artists like Nas Jay Kool G Rap Black Thought deserve extra mention they have some of the best catalogues and are also good lyricists.

But for me catalogue will always be what i judge rappers on, you actually helped my point with your example of the guy from your highschool with complxed rhymes, yet you wouyd never listen to his songs. I think the ability to craft a great album, and craft great songs should outweigh technical skills. At the end of the day there both important but spitting a bunch of multis about random shit is not impressive to me, i can do it now. But crafting a song is much harder, which is why i rate guys like Face higher than guys like Canibus or even Monch when discussing rappers. Face has a plethora of great albums and despite not being as technically skilled as most rappers you would find it hard to name me a rapper who has produced more quality music and has been consistent for as long as he has.

Which is my point about Em, there are alot of rappers who can go toe to toe with him technically speaking, guys like Canibus Lupe Mos Def etc. But what puts rappers ahead undoubtedly to me is their work, does Em have a top 5 catalogue to me? No way. You got Common Nas Jay Face Cube Ghostface Killah who have better catalogues.

Nas said eminem is in his top 10.

Common said eminem is the definition of an emcee.

Jay said only em and nas represent competition to him. Also put Em in his top 5.

Lupe said he can't f. with eminem, but he has everyone else covered. Can you guess on what spot does this place eminem ?

There are rappers that can go toe to toe with him technically speaking (not the guys you mentioned, but there are), there are that can go toe to toe with him on storytelling etc. ,but not that many that can even come close when you sum them all up.

Em's goat.

He's a top 4 legend in hip-hop for sure, all the greats respect him......the poll numbers in this thread speak for itself.

Em get's a lot of praise from great rappers. Even Scarface said he didn't want to get on a track with him because he's just to good. 3 Stacks has said some great things about Em too. It's funny, most rappers who are considered legends have Shady in their top 5. It's cool though... Being the highest selling rap artist ever is gonna get you some haters. Jay's got em', Nas has got em' and that's just the way it works. Being a part of the rap game, you can't make everyone happy.

Numbers don't lie. Can't deny that lyrically he can't destroy almost anybody in the game. And he goes platinum on everything he drops. He's not even my favorite, but it is what it is....

Then I ask if not Eminem, then who? And I ain't listening to opinions without FACTS!
