NAACP’s LDF Sues WH Election Panel, Alleging Racial Discrimination

The NAACP’s Legal Defense and Education Fund (LDF) on Tuesday filed a lawsuit along with the Ordinary People Society against the Trump administration’s bogus “election integrity” commission, alleging that the commission was formed in an attempt to discriminate against minorities.

“This commission has one purpose: to justify voter suppression. Numerous statements made by this President and his surrogates about the need for this commission – statements detailed in our complaint – support the conclusion that this commission was created to substantiate the claim that African American and Latino voters are engaged in widespread voter fraud,” Sherrilyn Ifill, the president and director-counsel of the LDF said in a statement.

The LDF argues that the commission violates the Constitution because it was formed as a way to racially discriminate. The group also argues that the President does not have the authority to establish such a commission and that that power lies with the Election Assistance Commission.

The group said that it believes the commission had plans to use its request for state data on voters to compare voters rolls to lists to a Department of Homeland Security list of people who are not U.S. citizens. LDF noted that President Donald Trump has “made false allegations of widespread voter fraud in the United States, often using racially coded language linking voter fraud to predominately minority urban communities and to ‘illegals'” without any evidence.

The group also noted in its statement that some Americans have already started canceling their voter registration in order to protect their personal information, citing this as clear damage.

The Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Under Law, the Electronic Privacy Information Center and the ACLU have also filed lawsuits against the commission, but the LDF is the first to allege racial discrimination.

Ex-Speaker Dennis Hastert Transferred Out of Prison

Former U.S. Speaker of the House Dennis Hastert was released from prison today after serving 13 months for banking violations of paying money to a victim he sexually abused when he was his wrestling coach in high school.

Hastert, 75, was sentenced to 15 months in prison last year, after a lawsuit that found he was guilty of trying to pay $3.5 of hush money to one of his victims. Throughout the course of the investigation, it was found he had molested at least five boys during his time as a teacher and wrestling coach at Yorkville High School in the 1960s.

Hastert was not charged with sexual abuse because the statute of limitation had expired. However, he was found guilty of misleadingly withdrawing money for off-the-books transactions, where he paid $1.7 million of the $3.5 he promised to someone who he molested when they were 14.

Judge Thomas Durkin is the one who sentenced him and also called him a “serial child molester,” but Hastert expressed remorse at his hearing.

“I want to apologize to the boys I mistreated when I was a coach. They looked [up] at me and I took advantage of them,” he said.

Before the scandal, Hastert was the longest serving Republican speaker in history, serving eight years as speaker and another 20 in Congress before retiring in 2007.

Since his release on Tuesday, he has been at a re-entry facility in Chicago. He will be supervised for two years and must enroll in a treatment program for sex offenders. He was also ordered to pay $250,000 to his victims at his hearing.

Hastert went into prison by wheelchair on June 22, 2016 at a facility in Minnesota.

President Donald Trump had a second, informal meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin at the G-20 summit earlier this month, White House officials confirmed Tuesday.

The meeting was undisclosed until Ian Bremmer, a political scientist and president of the Eurasia Group, told Charlie Rose in an interview released Tuesday that the two leaders met on the sidelines of the global summit in Hamburg, Germany, following a dinner with the heads of state attending the conference. That second, private meeting took place after Trump’s formal sit-down with the Russian president, which lasted more than two hours.

The White House then confirmed to NBC News and Reuters that the meeting had in fact taken place.

According to Bremmer, the second meeting lasted an hour, and the only person present aside from Trump and Putin was a Russian translator.

“You have an hour that evening that no one’s even heard of,” said Bremmer in an interviewing airing on Bloomberg and PBS. “We clearly know that Trump does not care what the media has to say about his desire to have a close, personal relationship with the Russian president, and what drives it.”

He continued: “Never in my life as a political scientist have I seen two countries, major countries, with a constellation of national interests that are as dissonant, while the two leaders seem to be doing everything possible to make nice and be close to each ot

US Military Renting Space In Trump Tower For $130,000 Per Month

The U.S. military unit in charge of support for President Donald Trump has been renting space in Manhattan’s Trump Tower for $130,000 per month since April, even though Trump has not stayed the night there since his inauguration, the Wall Street Journal reported Tuesday night.

The government signed a $2.39 million lease to rent more than 3,000 square feet in the building from April 11 through Sept. 30, 2018, according to a lease the newspaper obtained from the General Services Administration through a Freedom of Information Act request. The space was rented for $180,000 for part of April, and then $130,000 for each month after that, according to the report.

The GSA redacted the name of the person who owns the building from the lease. However, James A. MacStravic, the acting Undersecretary of Defense for Acquisition, Technology and Logistics, wrote in a letter to a Democratic member of Congress that the person who owns the space is not affiliated with the Trump Organization. The GSA does list the owner of the space on its inventory list as Joel R. Anderson, a businessman in Alabama, per the Wall Street Journal.

CNN had reported back in February that the military was looking into renting space in Trump Tower to help fulfill the President’s security needs. It’s not uncommon for the government to make these arrangements, and they did so for former President Barack Obama.

Though the government pays for security for all presidents, the Trump family has proven particularly costly to protect. Congress set aside $120 million in May to pay for Trump’s security through the end of September, about half of which will be used to reimburse the cities of New York and Palm Beach for the high security costs they have seen as Trump and his family travel.

Kobach: ‘We May Never Know’ Who Won 2016 Popular Vote

The vice chair of the White House’s bogus “election integrity” commission said Wednesday that “we may never know” whether millions of illegal votes cost President Donald Trump the popular vote in the 2016 election — despite the lack of any evidence to support Trump’s frequent claim that millions of ballots were cast illegally.

“Do you believe Hillary Clinton won the popular vote by 3 to 5 million votes because of voter fraud?” MSNBC’s Katy Tur asked Kobach in an interview after the commission’s first meeting. Clinton won the popular vote by nearly 3 million votes.

“We will probably never know the answer to that question, because even if you could prove that a certain number of votes were cast by ineligible voters, for example, you wouldn’t know how they voted,” he said.

Kobach said the commission was not created to substantiate Trump’s claims.

Tur asked again later: “You think that maybe Hillary Clinton did not win the popular vote?”

“We may never know the answer to that question,” Kobach said.

No secretary of state or board of elections in the country has reported massive voter fraud of illegal voting.

Tur tried a different question later: “So are the votes for Donald Trump that lead him to win the election in doubt as well?”

“Absolutely,” Kobach said. “If there are ineligible voters in an election — people who are non-citizens, people who are felons who shouldn’t be voting according to the laws of that state — you don’t know.”
