Rumor: Guardians of the Galaxy 2 Adds Sylvester Stallone to It's Cast

Deadpool may have been the first Marvel-related superhero to break the fourth wall in his own movie, but when it comes to self-reference and metahumor no one outshines Guardians of the Galaxy; with its stuck-in-the-80s leader Star Lord (Christ Pratt) giving the franchise license to pack itself with classic pop songs and pop-culture callbacks to everything from Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles to Kevin Bacon to Marvel’s own Howard the Duck. The upcoming sequel looks to take these meta-gags one step further, casting ’80s cult-movie icon Kurt Russell in an undisclosed major role.

And it looks like Russell won’t be alone, either. Now rumor has it Russell’s fellow ’80s action hero Sylvester Stallone will also be making an appearance in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2.

The rumor from the NY Daily News started with Stallone being photographed in Atlanta, Georgia (near the studio space where writer/director James Gunn is currently filming Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2), exiting a hotel carrying what looked like a movie script and getting into a car “usually assigned to Chris Pratt.” While no confirmation or denial has been issued by Marvel Studios at the time of writing this, the circumstances are consistent with the idea of the actor visiting the Guardians set to either shoot or rehearse a scene (or scenes).

The Guardians of the Galaxy films takes place in a “Cosmic” are of the Marvel Cinematic Universe that is crawling with tertiary characters who could plausibly be making an appearance in Gunn’s highly-anticipated sequel – including, a multitude of aliens, deities, demigods, non-corporeal beings and personified esoteric concepts like Eternity and Infinity. However, because Stallone seemed to be making a physical appearance on the Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 set, it would seem plausible that (if he is indeed part of the cast) he’d be playing a character who’d be interacting physically with the other actors – as opposed to a voice-over role or motion-capture performance that could’ve been more discreetly recorded elsewhere (a la Vin Diesel as Groot).

Until this point, it has been assumed that Kurt Russell’s also-unrevealed character is going to be Peter Quill’s (Star Lord’s) father, the non-humanity of whom was a surprise reveal at the end of the first Guardians film and whose identity is expected to be a major plot point in the sequel. But as that assumption was based largely on the sense it made in terms of meta-humor – i.e. a guy who’s self-consciously trying to present himself as a quintessential ’80s action hero has a real ’80s action her for a dad – it’s entirely possible that Stallone (who fits the same pedigree) could fill that role as well. Either way, it adds an extra layer of possibility for hardcore Marvel fans who’ve been feverishly trying to work out the secret for themselves.

One such possibility could be Vance Astro, aka Major Victory. A founding member and leader of the original 1970s incarnation of the Guardians in the comics (which actually took place in the far-future of the Marvel Universe), Astro was a human (later revealed to be Mutant) astronaut from Earth who was lost in space for 1,000 years but preserved in cryo-sleep thanks to metallic-alloy bonded to his skin. Remaking himself as a space-age superhero upon awakening, he eventually rediscovers the long-lost shield of Captain America and rechristens himself “Major Victory”. Given the similarity of his backstory to Star Lord’s, there’d be a certain symmetry to his (somehow) being the mystery-dad, and both Stallone and Russell have spent much of their careers cultivating the kind of larger-than-life hero persona that could lead one to name themselves Major Victory.

Whoever he (or Russell, for that matter) is playing, Stallone’s presence would certainly be a significant addition to the sequel’s pedigree. One of the most well-known and beloved movie stars of his generation thanks to iconic characters like Rocky Balboa and John Rambo, Stallone is also coming off of an Oscar nominated turn in the wildly-popular Rocky revival, Creed.

Joke rumor or not, Ice Cube as Jonah Jameson is a smart choice.

Only because Cube is always playing that loud, gruff boss type in movies, which is mainly how Jameson is known.

I wouldn't be mad at Cube playing him, but I think there are better actors out there. I'm all for it being a non-white actor though.

In before white motherfuckers complain about double standards and what would happen if Black Panther was white or why characters keep being changed black like human torch.

Zendaya Lands Major Role in 'Spider-Man' Reboot

Sony and Marvel have made the very wise decision to enlist recent Complex cover star Zendaya for the forthcoming Spider-Man reboot. Though details regarding Zendaya's role remain relatively scarce, Deadline confirms she will portray a character named Michelle. Zendaya has reportedly been secretly testing for the role for months, though its exact impact on the plight of young Peter Parker remains a mystery.

As previously reported, this Tobey Maguireless / Andrew Garfieldless Spider-Man will star Tom Holland and will (thankfully) not be an origin story. "I think that everybody feels like, you know, [Peter Parker] got bit by a spider and you know Uncle Ben died," screenwriter Jonathan Goldstein told Grantland back in August. "We probably don't need to revisit that."

Spider-Man, this time directed by Jon Watts, hits theaters in July of next year. In addition to the aforementioned Holland (a.k.a. still not Donald Glover!), Zendaya is set to be joined by Marisa Tomei. The Oscar-winning actress will likely play Aunt May, Variety reported last July. Shortly after word of Tomei's casting broke, a rumored cast list started making rounds that also included Billy Zane, Jason Biggs, and Forest Whitaker. None of those names have been even remotely confirmed, of course, but perhaps there's room for them in that stand-alone Venom spin-off.
