The streaming service's number of paying subscribers has doubled since May 2014, when Spotify laid claim to 40 million active users and 10 million paying subscribers. Over the last year, Spotify said in a press release, it has gained a new subscriber on average every three seconds.
Spotify also said that it has now paid out over $3 billion (£1.93 billion) in royalties to artists since launching in 2008, of which $300 million (£193 million) came in the first three months of 2015 alone. The streaming service also claimed that its increase in subscribers will have a sizeable impact on the royalty cheques that each artist receives. When Spotify had 10 million subscribers, Spotify said that a typical "niche/indie artist" received $0.7m (£450,000) in royalties over 12 months, but projected that this figure will rise to $1.2m (£770,000) over 12 months now it has 20 million subscribers.
Spotify's impressive new subscriber figures arrive in the same week that Apple launched a rival music streaming service. Apple Music was announced on Monday (June 8) at the company's WWDC keynote speech in San Francisco. Posting on Twitter during the live-streamed event, Spotify's CEO Daniel Elk reportedly wrote: "Oh ok", before later deleting the tweet.

So in 2014 pre-tidal you could stream concerts for free. Coachella, Bonaroo, Lollapalooza, Yahoo/Live Nation Concert Series, Summer Jam and many more.
In 2015 tidal is pick pocketing streams that were free to the public to allow them to be introduced to new artists. They are taking concerts like Summer Jam, Jay-Z/Prince/JCole shows and forcing you to sign up for the paid version/trial for shit you could see for free if Jay, Prince, or cole was performing at one of these festivals (all have performed at at least one of the festivals noted above and you could catch it for free).
Likewise the big corporate giant Apple that Jay Stans are upset we are not critical for, offers yearly free streams of their top notch I-Tunes Music Festival free of charge.
How can tidal say they are giving the fans more when they are taking away free streams that last year you could stream for free? Likewise its only 2015 imagine how many festivals would no longer be free if tidal succeeds and cuts more deals with festivals.
