Are any of you guys survivalists? I'm not into stockpiling ammo like the dudes who keep thousands and thousands of rounds, but for some reason I always keep 3 loaded mags available at all times.
i am not a survivalist, but i do keep thousands and thousands of rounds because it's just a lot cheaper to stockpile/shoot that way.

as in, not hoarding but actively attempting to save money. that last wave of purchasing was... 3500 rounds in 4 calibers.

Jesus. 3500 across 4 calibers or 3500 of each???

But yeah I always just buy a box here or there when I see something on sale, nothing of that magnitude.

3500 rounds isn't really a lot of ammo tho

I've been to training courses where an individual would have to expend 1500 rounds in 4 or 5 days

I had a OIC when I was in the Army who was a real serious firearm/military gear collector........this guy had built a fully underground bunker behind his house..........and he had a total of about 100,000 rounds of different calibers

I know for a fact he is one of those survivalist types

3500 rounds is alot of ammo to civilian life bruh, military people need to stop comparing their firearm lifestyle experience with civilians, cause they clearly don't compare

1000 .223, 1000 .23 LR, 1000 9mm, 500 .45. i actually wish i had doubled up on the .223 because i got a deal

ehhh i don't know that i concur. for common-use calibers, 500-1000 rounds is my minimum buy

haha it's easy to forget that many folks on here are new/casual shooters

in both examples I mentioned I was referring to ammo use/storage in a civilian context

the 1500 rounds expended in 4 days is for a casual civilian training course on the use of a carbine.......other civilian shooters like those who 3-gun at competitions easily burn thru that ammo

that Army guy I mentioned had a personal stock at home of over 100K rounds

meanwhile most serious shooters usually got at least 500 - 1K rounds in the caliber of their choice, especially if they do their own reloading..........it is not unusual to find serious shooters with more than 1 firearm who keep any where from 5K to 10K rounds stored somewhere........I guess u would be surprised at what people keep in their gun safe at home haha

What is the point of having 10k rounds tho? Is that prep for a massive gun ban or collapse of society type event?

ZydecoShawty;9106942 said:
Either they preparing for a race war or waiting for the time to overthrow the government

ammo can last up to 50 yrs if stored properly and storing 10K doesn't really take up that much space

why not store ammo in bulk if u can.........especially if u frequently shoot and don't want to get caught up in price fluctations/ammo shortages

that's like saying why save ur money if u know u getting a paycheck next week haha

and funny enough if there was some type of societal collapse I wouldn't be surprised to see ammo as currency (joking, but I'm not joking)

and when u guys go to the range, how much ammo do u normally shoot?

I can easily burn thru 100 rounds in a session for 1 caliber, and usually I shoot as least two or three calibers depending on what I'm doing

rifles are a lil different especially if u talking about .30 caliber and up

I like to empty all 3 30 round magazines, don't like paying to reload all 3 30 round magazines again after the emptying them tho

how often do u go to the range?

and do u leave with absolutely no ammo once u leave the range? sounds like a perfect ironic opportunity to get robbed haha

i fell back from shooting since the shit ultimately ends with me paying up $50 a session after reload ammo is included, i also make sure to leave 10 rounds in the last mag so i won't be completely empty, it's been a couple months since i last been to the range tho

this right here.

i made a cursory check and there are ten calibers i have 500+ rounds for right now, and this actually feels low.

not at all!

again, same thing, essentially.

i'm not shooting hundreds of rounds of serious rifle rounds or magnum handgun rounds. but 5.56? 7.62x39? it doesn't take a lot of effort to shoot a decent amount of that.

well, buying in bulk to save money often means buying 500-1000 rounds at once; i don't really go for hoarding ammo to hoard it, but what i will do is buy 500-1000, and when i have shot about 50% of it... re-up again.

i will note that during the last panic i was able to shoot without feeling TOO bad about it.

i can't speak to range fees, and i know some ranges DO mandate you buy ammo with them (or restrict what you can bring in)... but this is where buying quantities of ammo saves you money.

Whats the best site for buying in bulk online? Midway and cheaper than dirt seem to be somewhat decent.
start here: gunbot.net.

i will concede i'll pay more for something slightly better than what's cheapest, and i have my preferred brands for plinking, blah blah blah, but bulk ammo saves money either way.

Midway is cool, CTD can die in a fucking fire for their post-Newtown price gouging. i hold a fucking grudge.

also look into local/semi-local gun shows if they have dealers who bring quantities for good price. there's a dude out here who does this for PA, MD, VA shows and sometimes he's quite competitive.

Thanks for the advice.

My biggest concern is having 1000 rounds of ammo sitting out when it's delivered. I really don't live in the best neighborhood. But yeah looking around buying in bulk really does save a lot. I'm a fairly casual shooter so 1000 rounds could last me 6 months.

which i will concede is a legit concern (for a lot of things); it's not an issue for me but this might argue in favor of "hit up gun shows that allow for decent bulk buying."

i don't shoot as much as i SHOULD, but for less popular calibers, it's worked out than way (and longer). i bet my supply of 7.62x54R lasts longer than i do.
