I Salute that young man for dropping a great album, and doing the west coast justice, and giving all these young up and coming rappers a standard to aim for. I still think Nas-L.I.G is album of the year, but GKMC is 1B. Overall it's a strong 4.75/5 and that's only because he left off Westside Ride (why son why)

JMSN is a white R*B singer (in the same vein as Frank Ocean etc)

Swimming POols has the chopped and screwed "Drank"

they used back up singers and vocal manipulations

@RuffDraft i respect that, but "ignorance" isn't only in the mainstream

I agree, but there's a lot more mature material in the underground, IMO. Mainly because they don't have label heads in their ears.

It's a shame that so many check for Mainstream on this site, with good taste in hip hop music and yet you still hear the same people referring to MMG as Maybach Music Group, when in fact there's another label called MMG, which is Mello Music Group; and in my opinion, Mello Music Group have brought out a standard above everyone else this year with releases from Apollo Brown and Oddisee, Substantial and others; with another release from Apollo to follow.

Yet Mello don't even seem to be known. Have people never heard Apollo's beats? They're other worldly, IMO.

So for me personally, I'll stay with the underground for most of my listening experiences, although I'm sure I miss out on the odd banger from the few mainstream albums that I sleep on. Classical music has been the choice of listen recently though and it's great that an album from Kendrick can pull me back… October-December for the last 3 years has been fantastic for music, particularly hip hop.

About the album. I was listenin to it again, and I don't know if it's just me, but I think the story of the album takes place circa 04-05 with these few clues.

1st clue: They keep referencing Young Jeezy, who was real hot in EVERY HOOD IN AMERICA in '05.

2nd clue: I forgot what song it was, but I remembered him Sayin something about listening Usher's song "Burn", which was a huge hit around that time period.

3rd Clue: In M.A.A.D. City, he says how he worked as a security guard and he had got fired after a month on the job. If you listen to P&P from the Kendrick Lamar EP, he says

"used to have a nine-to-five, fresh out of school, that was '05

That bitch was racist, got me fired, ever since then, I had no job

Pushing in my mama van, stop for gas on Rosecrans

Trust me, these niggas rushed me for something my cousin probably did".

Notice the "Pushin my Mama's van" part and that's should be a dead giveaway rite there. That's how the story began with him takin his moms whip.

It would make more sense that it took place in 04-05 if you think about it, cuz Kendrick was born in 1987, and around that time he was still 17 goin on 18 yrs old, which puts the GOOD KID part of the title in context. He can't be a 25 yrs old (his current age) and still sayin that he's a good kid. This album could probably even be him talkin about his years as a teenager.
