Haven't seen the episodes, but didn't Goku have the benefit of watching the Vegeta fight? That's pretty much all either Goku or Vegeta needs to turn the tables.

Edit: Seen the episode with Vegeta losing. It's pretty much what I thought. Vegeta's fight pretty much revealed the information Goku needed to make a counter.

When Goku asked Vegeta if he has any advice, all he could say was "no just do your best." Vegeta did not know what to do at all. maybe if he seen what hit could do first then he wouldve had a plan. Things were going on way too fast for vegeta to develop a plan.

Goku has instant tranmission, kaioken and even Solar flare in his arsenal. thats what separates them. im glad most the fights been more tactical than an all out brawl though

Yeah a tactical approach could add depth to dbz that way wack ass gohan can do something or maybe trunks and goten, i wonder what they're gonna do with the saiyan planet

It wasn't the fact that Goku, on his own, watched the fight that he learned what to do. It was the galactic patrol niggas telling him how Hit operated. They told him he could freeze time for 0.1 seconds before he attacks. Goku and Vegeta thought he was just super fast, not that he was freezing time.

Then during the fight, Hit revealed to Goku he was aiming for his vital areas. So that's why Goku could predict where and when he would be attacked. Vegeta had none of that knowledge, hence why he didn't know how to counter.

I think they are more or less equal when it comes to fighting ability.

Vegeta is the better tactician and more capable when it comes to creating techniques.

Goku is more creative and a quicker learner.

That's basically the reason Goku has always been better. He's basically shown the ability to instantly learn how to do things after only seeing them once.
When you couple that with the fact that he has no problem seeking out people who can teach him, there is no wonder that he's constantly pushing his limits.

Vegeta on the other hand is very good at making the best possible use of his power, but he's always had a harder time getting over humps because of his own stubbornness and the fact that things don't click as quickly for him as they do for Goku.

When you have them on the same level, I believe Vegeta always has an edge, but when you give them a new mark to hit, Goku has the advantage. This is still true even in DBS. The two basically got to SSB at the same time, but Vegeta starting the train well before Goku, so Goku was a faster learner. Now that they are on that level though, multiple things including Goku's own comments suggest Vegeta is the stronger of the two.

Spot on

Like @coop9889 pointed out, no one knew what to do until it was revealed what Hit's power was. Even then Goku still took some hits before he caught on.

People aren't recognizing that Vegeta did formulate a plan, a good one. He realized he could take Hit's attacks, so he let Hit hit him, so that he could trap him. That would have worked if Hit was simply just super fast which is what Vegeta believed at the time. It didn't work though because Hit freezes time. Goku went into the fight knowing that and essentially not having to go down the wrong path that Vegeta did.

Plus Goku (or rather the people that write him) isn't all that smart in this case anyway. He knew Hit could only freeze people for 0.1 secs, so the first thing he should have done was hit Hit with the Solar Flare. That would have affected hit longer than 0.1 secs and he would have basically been at Goku's mercy after that.
