Povetkin's Promoter Ready To Sue Team Wilder, Force Mandatory

By Igor Lazorin, tass

World of Boxing CEO Andrei Ryabinsky, who promotes Olympic gold medal winner and former WBA heavyweight champion Alexander Povetkin, is ready to lawyer up and force the mandatory fight with WBC heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder.

Ryabinsky is annoyed after the recent from Wilder's manager Jay Deas, who said the mandatory fight is cancelled and will not be postponed to a later date.

The fight was scheduled to take place on May 21 in Moscow, Russia - but the World Boxing Council officially put a stop to the contest after Povetkin tested positive for the banned substance meldonium.

While Ryabinsky wants to reschedule the fight to a new date, Deas is very firm in stating that the contest is "off" and not "postponed" as the Russian promoter claims.

"The fight is off. Not postponed. Off. We are gutted. All the hard work we put in with the time, effort and money is gone, through no fault of ours. The ripple effect from this cancellation reaches hundreds of people. We will take some time off and be back soon and continue to campaign and demand a clean sport and level playing field," Deas stated.

Povetkin's promoter claims his fighter took the drug when it was still legal, last September. The drug became a banned substance on January 1st of this year. But three of Povetkin's test in the first half of April came up negative for the drug, with the fourth coming up positive late in the month. Based on that scenario, it is being claimed that he came in contact with the drug at some point in late April.

The WBC is conducting an investigation into Povetkin's story.

Ryabinsky maintains the contest with Wilder is going to take place on another date, with the same conditions, or he will pursue a legal action to make the fight take place.

The Russian promoter won a purse bid early this year to secure the promotional rights to the contest.

"It may end up in court, we are ready for that," said Ryabinsky.

Smh @ this janky ass promoter trying sue somebody.. When it was his own fighter that caused all of this shit to go down.. Plus he just got caught lying trying to cover up his fighters cheating.. Both of them need to stfu and hold their L's...

Deontay Wilder-Alexander Povetkin title fight postponed

Heavyweight titleholder Deontay Wilder's defense against mandatory challenger Alexander Povetkin was called off Sunday in the wake of Povetkin's positive test for the banned substance meldonium.

Wilder and Povetkin were scheduled for their much-anticipated fight on May 21 at the Khodynka Ice Palace in Moscow, but in a Voluntary Anti-Doping Association urine test conducted April 27 in Chekhov, Russia, Povetkin tested positive for meldonium. The test results came to light Friday when the VADA sent letters to both camps and the WBC, whose title Wilder holds, disclosing them.

Wilder and his team have been in Sheffield, England, for the past two weeks training and adjusting to several hours of time difference. They were scheduled to fly to Moscow on Sunday afternoon but did not board their flight and were making plans to return to the United States despite having not heard from the WBC on the matter, a member of Wilder's team told ESPN.com.

Hours after Wilder and his team skipped their flight, the WBC, having little choice with the titleholder preparing to return home, announced the fight was off and called it a postponement.

"The World Boxing Council is diligently addressing the positive test result from the [WBC's] clean boxing program for mandatory challenger Alexander Povetkin," WBC president Mauricio Sulaiman said in a statement. "Keeping the priority of safety and also the principle of justice, the WBC will continue the investigation into the case. Consequently, the event scheduled for May 21 in Moscow is hereby officially postponed. The WBC will be releasing more information in the coming days regarding the final ruling on the matter."

Wilder, who embraced going to foreign territory to defend his title, was upset that the fight was called off.

"I'm very disappointed that due to Povetkin's failed drug test the fight is not going to happen on May 21 in Moscow," Wilder said in a statement. "I had worked very hard to prepare myself for this important title defense, spending the last two weeks training in England to get accustomed to fighting in Europe. I wanted to give the fans a great show, but we understand the WBC's position that the fight occur on an even playing field.

"This is a huge disappointment and a setback to my goals in boxing. I want to be an active heavyweight champion and it is still my goal to collect all the belts and become the undisputed heavyweight champion of the world."

Meldonium is the same drug for which tennis star Maria Sharapova and many other athletes recently tested positive. It was approved to be added to the banned substance list by the World Anti-Doping Agency in September, and the ban went into effect Jan. 1. Meldonium is used to increase blood flow and carry more oxygen to muscles, thereby enhancing stamina, a trait boxers would want in a long fight.

"The guy tested positive for a dangerous drug and the health and safety of Deontay was paramount, so the fight could not take place on May 21," Wilder promoter Lou DiBella told ESPN.com. "Deontay would have fought King Kong without any regard for what substance was being used, but Povetkin's use of this banned substance and the breach of the contract deprived Deontay of an opportunity to defend his title on a fair playing field. As a result, Deontay has suffered significant damages.

"He has gone through his entire training camp and expended a tremendous amount of time and money and energy. It's awful."

Povetkin said he is clean and took meldonium before the ban went into effect.

"I haven't taken anything or consumed anything, so I've got nothing to fear," he said.

Andrey Ryabinsky of World of Boxing, Povetkin's promoter, said the fight would be rescheduled while the rest of the card will go forward. A cruiserweight world title unification bout between Russia's Denis Lebedev (28-2, 21 KOs) and Victor Emilio Ramirez (22-2-1, 17 KOs), of Argentina, has been moved from the co-feature to the main event.

"Any talk from Ryabinsky of a rescheduled date is both unfounded and premature," DiBella said. "We need to sit back and await further rulings from the WBC, but we will weigh all of our options."

There is a lot of money at stake. Based on Ryabinsky's winning purse bid of $7.15 million, Wilder was due $4,504,500 to Povetkin's $1,930,500 with the remaining 10 percent -- $715,000 -- going to the winner. With no fight, the purses won't be paid and a lawsuit is likely to ensue; Wilder's purse is sitting in escrow in a United States bank, according to his camp.

If there is a lawsuit, Ryabinsky could have issues mirroring a 2014 situation he was in.

Lebedev, who is promoted by Ryabinsky, was due to face Guillermo Jones in a rematch in Russia, but with the fighters in their dressing rooms hours before the fight, Jones tested positive for a banned diuretic, which is typically used as a masking agent for steroids. The fight was canceled, and Ryabinsky later won a judgment against Jones promoter Don King for the money he and Lebedev were owed for the bout.

Ryabinsky said Povetkin's levels of meldonium were very low and that the traces in his system were left over from when he took it in September.

"He has not taken it since Jan. 1. The situation is ambiguous," Ryabinsky told Russia's TASS news agency before the fight was called off. "The blood sample was taken in April this year."

However, Povetkin was tested by the VADA on April 7, 8 and 11, and each of those tests came back negative for any banned substances, according to two letters ESPN.com obtained in which the VADA disclosed those test results to both sides and the WBC. Those results indicate that meldonium apparently entered Povetkin's system after the ban was in place.

Wilder (36-0, 35 KOs), 30, a 2008 U.S. Olympic bronze medalist from Tuscaloosa, Alabama, was supposed to make his fourth title defense against Russia's Povetkin (30-1, 22 KOs), 36, a 2004 Olympic gold medalist. Povetkin loomed as Wilder's most significant opponent, and the fight is one of the significant bouts that could be made in the heavyweight division.

Povetkin, Ryabinsky Vow To Announce New Wilder Fight Date

MOSCOW — Russian heavyweight Alexander Povetkin denied taking meldonium Monday after a failed doping test caused his fight against WBC champion Deontay Wilder to be postponed.

Povetkin tested positive for meldonium last month and the WBC ruled Sunday that his bout with Wilder, which had been scheduled for Saturday in Moscow, would be delayed for an investigation.

"I'm clean. I haven't taken anything or consumed anything, so I've got nothing to fear," Povetkin said, adding he only took meldonium before it was banned at the start of the year.

Povetkin said he has no plans to look for another bout against a different opponent.

"I'm getting ready for this fight and we're not looking at anything else," the Russian boxer said. "Now they'll announce a new date for the fight and we'll get ready for that."

Wilder's team has said the fight could be canceled altogether, but the Russian camp said it is likely to be rescheduled.

Povetkin's promoter, Andrei Ryabinsky, demanded the fight be rescheduled and said he did not consider his fighter to have failed the doping test because the concentration of meldonium in the sample was, he said, extremely low.

"We want to hold the extra investigation, then after that set a new date for the fight and have the fight," Ryabinsky said. "We felt our chances of victory were significant and we are disappointed to lose time."

Ryabinsky added that Povetkin had taken four doping tests and three were clean. That could be explained by meldonium's effects recurring months after it was last taken, he said.

Wilder's team said Sunday he was heading home to Alabama from his British training camp and said the fight could be canceled. Promoter Lou DiBella accused Povetkin of "breach of contract," adding that "any talk of rescheduling ... is unfounded and premature."

If Wilder's team tries to call off the fight, "of course we will represent our interests in court and we see our position as a strong one," Ryabinsky said.

Povetkin's Promoter: Wilder is NOT Getting Paid Until He Fights!

By Igor Lazorin

World of Boxing CEO Andrei Ryabinsky, who promotes Olympic gold medal winner and former WBA heavyweight champion Alexander Povetkin, is not going to pay WBC heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder - until the undefeated puncher goes through with his mandatory obligation.

The fight was scheduled to take place on May 21 in Moscow, Russia - but the World Boxing Council officially put a stop to the contest after Povetkin tested positive for the banned substance meldonium.

While Ryabinsky wants to reschedule the fight to a new date, Wilder's manager Jay Deas is very firm in stating that the contest is "off" and not "postponed" as the Russian promoter claims.

But three of Povetkin's test in the first half of April came up negative for the drug, with the fourth coming up positive late in the month. Based on that scenario, it is being claimed that he came in contact with the drug at some point in late April.

Ryabinsky maintains the contest with Wilder is going to take place on another date, with the same conditions, or he will pursue a legal action to make the fight take place.

The Russian promoter won a purse bid earlier this year to secure the promotional rights to the contest.

Under the terms of the purse bid, Wilder is entitled to $4.6 million - his biggest career payday.

Ryabinsky has NO plans to pay Wilder - until the fight is set down for a new date and goes through.

"The money is in the bank under the terms of escrow. Wilder's team has already written a letter to the bank, telling them not to return the money to us. And we wrote that [once the fight takes place] they will get the money," said Ryabinsky.

Frustrated Wilder on Povetkin's positive drug test: 'This shows they were scared from the get-go'

It was a weekend filled with anger and disappointment for heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder when his upcoming title defense against Alexander Povetkin was called off by the WBC following the challenger’s positive test for the banned substance meldonium.

Wilder (36-0, 35 KOs) had been scheduled to make his fourth title defense against Povetkin (30-1, 22 KOs) on Saturday in Moscow, but Povetkin's April 27 drug test by the Voluntary Anti-Doping Association revealed traces of meldonium.

The results of the positive test were revealed Friday, leading to Sunday’s announcement by the WBC, which was sanctioning the title fight, that the bout would be postponed pending an investigation.

“I’m just lost for words,” Deontay Wilder said Sunday from Sheffield, England, where he had spent the past two weeks preparing for the fight and adjusting to the time change. “It’s some bullshit for me as the champion to have gone through what I’ve gone through.

“I’ve done all the right things. I traveled to England, and I've put my body through so much and I’ve sacrificed so much, all just to come to a dead end and because of someone else’s actions. This shows they were scared from the get-go. They feared me. They didn’t want [me] to come to Russia to knock him out in front of his president and his people.”

Meldonium, for which tennis star Maria Sharapova also tested positive earlier this year, is used to increase blood flow and carry more oxygen to muscles, thus resulting in enhanced stamina. The World Anti-Doping Agency voted to add meldonium to the banned substance list in September, and the ban went into effect January 1.

Wilder’s promoter, Lou DiBella, said in a statement that his fighter would consider his options as he awaits the outcome of the WBC's investigation.

“Based upon Povetkin's positive test for meldonium, and with the health and safety of Deontay Wilder the paramount consideration, this fight could not take place next Saturday,” DiBella said.

“As a result of Povetkin's use of a banned substance and breach of contract, Deontay Wilder was deprived of an opportunity to defend his title as he had prepared to—on an even playing field. He and his team have suffered significant damages as a result. Any talk of rescheduling by [Povetkin's promoter Andrey] Ryabinsky at this point is unfounded and premature."

Wilder and his team had planned to fly to Moscow on Sunday for the final week of promotion and preparations leading up to fight night, but sat tight in Sheffield once they learned of Povetkin’s failed test.

Now, Wilder finds himself preparing to return to his hometown of Tuscaloosa, Alabama, his world championship still intact, but his desire to defeat Povetkin unquenched.

“I still want to whip his ass,’’ Wilder said. “There ain’t no drug that he can take that could stop the ass whipping I had waiting for him. Povetkin was never dangerous to me.

“I was ready to show the world what Deontay Wilder is capable of, but he stole my opportunity away from me—not only from me, but from the fans of boxing in his own country. We did everything right, we accepted everything and we were patient with these cowards. I’m sorry for the fans, because the fans really lost.”
