Kovalev-Stevenson Falls Through; Kovalev To Russia in June?

By Steve Kim

One final, last ditch attempt to make a fight between the two preeminent light heavyweights, WBO/WBA/IBF champion Sergey Kovalev (28-0-1, 25KOs) and WBC champion Adonis Stevenson (27-1, 22KOs), has fallen through. Main Events is now looking ahead by exploring alternative plans beyond Kovalev's upcoming fight against Jean Pascal this weekend at the Bell Centre in Montreal.

Kathy Duva says with a deal unable to be reached with Stevenson for a potential June unification.

Should Kovalev come out victorious on Saturday night and relatively unscathed, 'The Krusher' is heading overseas.

"We're going to Russia. We were planning to do that anyway when I went there last year, that was the plan," Duva told BoxingScene.com.

"We are now in the position to do it and I have not been talking to the people we would work with in Russia about this till now but we were upfront that we had a contract out to someone, until they come back and tell me yes or no, I really can't start negotiating with somebody else. But I will now go to them after Saturday and we'll put it in place and it'll probably be in June."

Kovalev is already slated to eventually face unbeaten Olympic gold medal winner Andre Ward in November - should Ward come out with a win, and no injuries, for his planned return on March 26th.

As for Stevenson, he will likely go forward with a mandatory defense in April against unbeaten GYM stablemate Eleider Alvarez.

This a bullshit stance and you know it! What noise did Willie Monroe Jr make to get the fight with GGG. Lara not being at 160 holds no weight in why the fight shouldn't happen.

So it makes sense for GGG to fight Dominic Wade instead of Lara only because Wade fights at 160 even though Lara is a better fighter than Wade?

Stop the bullshit

Kovalev’s Trainer, Pascal Nearly Come To Blows At Final Presser

By Keith Idec

Jean Pascal couldn’t draw an emotional response from Sergey Kovalev, but he infuriated Kovalev’s trainer during a press conference late Wednesday morning in Montreal to promote their light heavyweight championship rematch.

Pascal tossed a banana at a seated John David Jackson after berating Russia’s Kovalev, whom Pascal has repeatedly called a racist leading up to their 12-round rematch Saturday night at Bell Centre in Montreal (HBO). Jackson, who’s black, responded calmly when Pascal patted him on the shoulder, said, “Coach, I got you. I got you, man,” and dropped a banana in front of him.

Once Jackson got to the podium, though, he grew angry while speaking to Pascal. The former junior middleweight and middleweight title-holder eventually had to be pulled away from the podium.

There’s a lot I could say about Jean Pascal,” Jackson said. “He pretty much expressed it himself. He showed the true colors that he is as a person. Some of the things he said are very ignorant. It’s not about race. Sergey may say things that at the time that he says them, they may come out the wrong way. But if he was racist, I wouldn’t be in his corner. Trust me, in my gym everybody predominantly is black.”

Pascal promptly interrupted Jackson, who told him, “Shut the f*** up. You had your time. Shut the f*** up. You had your time. You’re getting knocked out on Saturday. That’s what you need to worry about, all right? Shut the hell up. This is one of the most ignorant people in the world.”

Pascal responded, “He came to see you three weeks before the fight. He doesn’t respect you because you’re black. He has no respect to show up to camp three weeks before the fight. That’s why he don’t trust you, because you’re black. He showed up to training camp three weeks before the fight.”

Jackson responded, “Is that all? Why is [former trainer] Marc [Ramsey] not here? Because he knows you’re getting knocked out in this fight. That’s why he’s not here. No other reason. He told you you’re gonna get knocked out this fight. Yeah, put the mic away now, because that’s true. You know that’s true. That’s why you’re stuck right here.”

Pascal, now trained by Freddie Roach, then stood up, picked up the microphone and moved in Jackson’s direction. The former WBC light heavyweight champion shouted at Jackson, “Watch your mouth! Watch your mouth! You’re just a punk! You’re a shame! You’re black guy! Stand up for black people! Stand up for black people! Stand up for black people! He doesn’t respect you! He doesn’t trust you!”

As Kovalev (28-0-1, 25 KOs) and others restrained Jackson, he challenged Pascal (30-3-1, 17 KOs, 1 NC) to “come on outside. You’ll get knocked out!”

Order quickly was restored and the press conference continued without incident.

Jackson: If Pascal is So Pro-Black, Why Did He Hire a White Trainer?

By Steve Kim

Today's final press conference to promote Saturday's rematch between light heavyweights Sergey Kovalev and Jean Pascal became very heated and contentious as Pascal ramped up his verbal venom - over what the Canadian star believes to be racist comments made in the past by the WBO/WBA/IBF champion. Pascal even handed out bananas of all things to make his point.

Much of Pascal's focus was directed at Kovalev's trainer, John David Jackson (who just happens to be African-American). Pascal urged him to stand up for his people and the respected trainer wasn't afraid to hold his ground.

Hours after the near confrontation between the two, Jackson told BoxingScene.com:

"He's trying to stir up interest in this fight and trying to get under Sergey's skin by saying stupid things. If Sergey was racist, I wouldn't be in his corner - that's first and foremost. Sometimes he says things the wrong way like with Adonis Stevenson, the Stevenson picture - that was in bad taste, he did that wrong, it was a bad joke. Pascal's just reaching for straws"

Jackson is referring to picture that Kovalev tweeted out that had a picture of a monkey on a young boy's shirt that he was posing with.'

''Here's the funny thing about it,"continued Jackson. "He says I'm a sell-out, that I've got this racist, well, if you're that pro-black - why did he hire a white trainer to be in his corner? Nothing against Freddie(Roach), Freddie's my friend. I'm just saying if you're that pro-black, bottom line you brought in a white man to be in your new trainer. All that race stuff, why would you hire Freddie to be in your corner?"

Jackson has worked with Kovalev the past several years as his career has ascended. He says his fighter has never given him any indication of being prejudiced.

"No, he's a different guy, he's moody, he has his way,"admitted Jackson, who added,"but he's never been racist. Listen, think about it, he comes to my gym and it's predominantly black. If he has a problem somebody would have checked him on it. But no, he doesn't have a problem, he comes in, does his thing. Yeah, sometimes he says things without thinking and that's his problem but he's not racist."

NEW YORK (Jan. 28, 2016) – SHOWTIME Sports® is commemorating 30 years of SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING with a year-long celebration that will highlight the biggest, most memorable and exciting SHOWTIME fights spanning four decades.

Next up is the presentation of both extraordinary Holyfield vs. Mike Tyson bouts airing Thursday evening at 10 p.m. ET/PT on SHO EXTREME.

The network’s flagship sports series, SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING, was born on March 10, 1986 when “Marvelous” Marvin Hagler defeated John “The Beast” Mugabi by spectacular 11th-round knockout. Since then, the series has distinguished itself as the premium television destination for boxing’s brightest stars and countless significant events in the storied history of the sweet science.

In celebration, SHOWTIME will go deep into its archive to reprise classic fights, grouping them together by a common theme each month. A new fight, each one wrapped with brief context and commentary from one of the network’s boxing experts, replays every “Throwback Thursday” night on SHOWTIME EXTREME throughout 2016. While Thursday night is the viewer’s destination for the initial replay of the classics, all the bouts for that month are available on SHOWTIME ON DEMAND®, SHOWTIME ANYTIME® and via the network’s online streaming service. Plus, on the last Saturday of the month, a programming block including all of that month’s classics will air concurrently on SHOWTIME EXTREME.

The month of January has been dedicated to Undisputed Heavyweight Champion Evander Holyfield and his Hall of Fame career. Thus far, SHOWTIME has presented a compilation from Holyfield’s cruiserweight career, plus Holyfield vs. Michael Dokes and Holyfield vs. Buster Douglas in entirety, with Holyfield vs. Tyson I and II continuing the extraordinary trip down memory lane.

Each month’s live SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING event will include a segment in support of the 30th anniversary retrospective. Segments will include a vintage feature or a special guest which will connect the greats of the past to the modern era and that night’s main event.

Digital support each month will include short form, high-impact video components—complete rounds, highlights, exclusive interviews with the biggest stars and historic perspective from the personalities that color the rich history of boxing on SHOWTIME.

It was a good fight. Fonfara has been improving too. And Stevenson hasn't been tested lately could be an upset special.
