Mayweather Vows To Make McGregor Pay For 'Monkeys' Comment

By Chisanga Malata, courtesy of The Daily Star

FLOYD MAYWEATHER is seemingly still reeling from comments Conor McGregor made last month.

During the whirlwind press tour to promote their August 26 boxing match, McGregor found himself in hot water after he reffered to Mayweather as ‘boy’.

In America, calling an African American man a 'boy' has significant racial connotations.

In years gone by, the word was often used by Caucasian-Americans to belittle African-American males, so it’s use still has a stinging effect on many members of the community.

McGregor, who was called to many of his opponents ‘boy’, tried to make light of the situation during the New York press conference, insisting the notion of him being a racist was ‘f***ing ridiculous’ before jokingly claiming he was ‘black from the belly button down’.

The reigning UFC lightweight champion courted more controversy after the tour's Toronto stop during a backstage interview with Jimmy Kimmel Live, in which he was asked who would win a fight between himself and Rocky Balboa from Rocky 3.

He responded by saying: “Rocky III? “I’m trying to remember which one was Rocky III. Was that the one in the celebrity gym? I can’t remember if that’s the one with the dancing monkeys or not.”

Many deemed McGregor’s ‘dancing monkeys’ comment as a direct reference to the black fighters sparring in Apollo Creed’s 'Tough Gym' in Los Angeles.

McGregor was given the benefit of the doubt by many, who insisted it was impossible to know exactly what the UFC superstar was referring to.

Mayweather isn’t amongst that group and is adamant his upcoming opponent knew what he was saying.

“I just didn’t like when he called us monkeys,” Mayweather said during an appearance on ESPN’s SportsCenter. “I think that was totally disrespect. He called us monkeys.

“I didn’t like it. It didn’t push a button to make me jump out of my character and go crazy, but I didn’t like it.”

Forty-year-old Mayweather was angered by McGregor’s comments but refrained from bringing them up during the tour’s final press conference in London.

“I just thought about all our different leaders,” he added. “Martin Luther King, Malcolm X. They went on the front line for me and my family and all my loved ones.

“Like I said before, this stuff still goes on. But I’m strong, I’m smart, patient. And come Aug. 26, I’ll be the same person — smart, strong, patient. And the same way he called us monkeys, we’re gonna see if he say that Aug. 26.

McGregor’s comments haven’t given Mayweather an extra motivation to register his fiftieth professional win, a feat which would see him break Rocky Marciano’s record.

However, he will enter his first fight in nearly two years with an added sense of purpose.

“No different,” Mayweather told Stephen A. Smith “But this is for a cause. This is for the American people. This is for all the blacks around the world.”

...but "all" lives matter though and all of a sudden you're fighting for Blacks around the world. Floyd, shut the fuck up.

I get what you saying but the fighters not being robbed cause they don't have to pay the fee(s) if they don't want to.

True boxing fans know that belts don't mean shit especially in this era where the same abc organization can have 2 champions in the same fucking weight class.

Saying its a championship fight with a belt on the line makes the shit sound good but its all about the 2 fighters in the ring.

Real boxing fans would rather watch 2 lb 4 lb guys fight with no belt on the line than to watch 2 bums fight for all the belts.

It keeps us from getting an undisputed champ.
