By Steve Kim
The May 7th clash between Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez and Amir Khan will have a weight limit of 155-pounds. The showdown was announced on Tuesday for May 7th at the brand new T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.
It's a fight that is being contested for Alvarez's WBC middleweight belt. The Mexican star looks to have a significant advantage in natural size and strength. With that said, is there a cap on how much weight Alvarez can gain after the weigh-in?
"No, not at all," said Eric Gomez, the VP of Golden Boy Promotions, which consummated this fight which will be distributed by HBO Pay-Per-View.
"Look, Canelo's really a 54-pounder but in order for him to defend his title he has to go over '54 since it's a middleweight title,"he continued to explain to BoxingScene.com.
"We've said it all along, 'Canelo' is a 54-pounder and he can still make weight with no problems. When the time comes he's going to move up to '60."
Which then brings about the next question: will they fight Gennady Golovkin - who holds the WBA and IBF belts in the middleweight class - in the near future?
"Of course, of course, that fight WILL happen,"stated Gomez. "It's a fight 'Canelo' wants, it's a fight that we want to make and of course, that fight will happen."
Under the agreement with the WBC, both Alvarez and Golovkin were allowed interim bouts and then ordered to go into negotiations for a fall bout.
Golovkin is slated to return on April 23rd in an HBO televised headliner and undefeated IBF mandatory challenger Dominic Wade is the likely candidate to land the fight.
Amir Khan: I Will Be Around 165-Pounds For Canelo
By Edward Chaykovsky
British star Amir Khan (31-3, 19KOs) is a huge underdog as he looks forward to his upcoming fight with WBC middleweight champion Saul "Canelo" Alvarez on May 7th from the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.
Khan has been searching for that pay-per-view headline fight for several years. He was unable to get Floyd Mayweather Jr. He was unable to get Manny Pacquiao. Canelo was more than happy to face him, but it comes with a price.
The fight is taking place at a catch-weight of 155-pounds, which is eight pounds above Khan's current fighting weight. Canelo is usually very heavy on fight night and often tips in as a light heavyweight once he enters the ring.
Khan is not discouraged by the weight. He plans to bulk up a bit and come to the fight weighing around 165-pounds, which he says is practically his walking weight when he's not in camp.
"I know the fight is at a catchweight. I have never fought at 155 before but I walk around at probably 160-plus so it will be me fighting at my natural weight. Come fight night I will probably be about 165 as well. I can see Alvarez maybe being even a little heavier than that, maybe going into the ring at 170, but we know what we need to do," Khan told Sky Sports.
"We know we will be up against a tough guy, a bigger guy, a stronger guy in Alvarez and we have to be smart in there and I think this is the first time I am going into a fight being the underdog."
"It's a good time for me to prove myself and show everyone how good Amir Khan is. Plus it's a big fight. I want to give the British fight fans a huge fight and you can't get bigger than this."
