XXL said the same (or smthn of that sort)..."Jay, Dash and third Roc-A-Fella principal, Kareem “Biggs” Burke, sold the remaining interest in the company to Def Jam for $10 million (http://www.xxlmag.com/magazine/2005/08/look-at-me-now/). Shit IDK but it sounds like they didnt own the entire thing. Could be wrong though.

your speaking of 2 different instances tho ... the 10 million was all three disbanding from the roc and selling it to def jam. this was right after jada kiss and uncle murda signed, and jay z started roc nation.

the paragraph i wrote was speaking on the original 7 year deal (1997). that deal was then renegotiated and extended. and then finally the jay and dame split which is the 10 million you're talking about. as of right now yes, def jam owns rocafella records, but they never had any ownership before buying it (the rights to use it) for 10 million just recently. the mistake was that def jam owned half of rocafella. they did not. they simply had a distribution deal in which they (def jam) brokered with rocafella and polygram. def jam collected 25% of earnings for marketing and promoting rocafella releases. poly gram distributed the albums

def jam never owned any percent of rocafella. they bought the entire label a few years agoand made jay z president of def jam as a whole.

So did them niccas just sell the imprint to Def Jam or did they selll the record label with all the artists contract ( those that remained w Jay anyway) to def Jam. Cause 10 milli seems kind of light if the artist contracts were bundled into to it

It was Biggs brother Bobollah (or somthn like that). He was murdered around that time I believe. Aaliyah had been dead for like 2 plus years when that video was recorded.

Oh yeah I think it was the homey usmarine who said that Jay, Dame, & Biggs were contractually obligated to at some point sell the ROC back to Def Jam...or in sports terms Def Jam had the option to buy thr ROC whenever they wanted to or saw fit. IDK how true this is but I'm still searching for any kind of proof. Anybody know if this is true or not or have a link of some sort?

its not true LOL

def jam had no option what so ever to buy or own rocafella. this is why jay z owns all his masters except for reasonable doubt. def jam and jay z bought out biggs and dame. the label was worthless without jay z. lyor and liles helped convince jay z to no longer work with dame and biggs. dame and biggs could have even gotten a bigger buy out settlement had they signed over their portion of the masters to reasonable doubt. dip set was gone, beans was in jail, bleek was flopping like a fish along with chris and neef, kanye was the only thing on rocafella that had any potential and even he hadnt reach his full value yet. when all this took place, jesus walks etc etc hadnt come out yet. kanye wasnt superstar status and no one was garunteeing that his sophmore release would do better than his first. making jay z president of def jam, giving him the masters, AND GIVING HIM the option to buy it back was part of the deal for him not working with dame and biggs anymore and selling the label. def jam gave JAY the right to buy it back .. not dame and biggs LOL .. this is how jay "snaked" dame and biggs supposedly. he used his leverage and business alliances to cut dame and biggs out of the company that they all built together. similar shit happened with facebook and mark zuckerburg. its nothing new or unheard of in big business at all

what def jam owns is the rocafella fella imprint .. they do not own vol.3 hardknock life or beans first album for example

there werent any valueable artists on rocafella at the time but kanye, and even he was just getting started. he was no superstar at that point. jay z was never signed as an artist to rocafella. thats the biggest misunderstanding alot of people have with the whole thing jay z was no longer obliged to record any albums for def jam because the distribution deal was up. from the start i dont think jay z realized it (or any one else for that matter) but he was just an owner with crazy star power that was carrying the label LOL.

they sold the imprint and any artists that were signed to rocafella. remember that jay gave beans his own state property imprint ... that how beans was able to go with dame

kanye wasnt even signed as an artist in its truest sense. kanye and just blaze were signed as producers. im not 100% on this but i think kanye's imprint was "good music" and just blaze had some other shit .... the same situation that had him fucking with saigon ... that wasnt rocafella

thats why kanye was able to choose also

plus, with lyor and liles being on jay's nuts .. im pretty sure they were able to pull strings for kanye if he sided with jay .... which he did LOL
