The Demise of EA Sports NBA Live (lets discuss) ......

EA Sports last year infamously rebranded NBA Live as NBA Elite, only to cancel the whole game at the last minute. This left competitor NBA 2K as the sole simulation basketball game on the market, and it's one that many fans would argue has been superior regardless. IndustryGamers recently chatted with EA's Peter Moore (formerly EA Sports label president) about the challenge ahead in basketball.

It's clear that EA Sports has no plans to give up just because they've taken some lumps on the court. 2K Sports' NBA 2K series has been on a roll, but this year's version could be hurt by the ongoing NBA lockout (perhaps as much as $40 million), so maybe it's a blessing in disguise that EA doesn't have an NBA simulation product this year. That said, Moore confirmed that the team at Tiburon already has an early version of the next NBA title up and running.

"We took a year off so that we can focus on building the quality that it needs to be. I know better than anybody, having helped build NBA 2K in my early days, the power of what Greg Thomas and Visual Concepts do. It's their focus because, as you know, they’ve given up on NHL recently. NBA is the game that they need to focus on... when I think about 2K sports, it’s probably 80% of their portfolio from a unit basis and a revenue basis. It’s a great game, but we’re not walking off the court crying here," Moore stressed to us.

"We’re focused on building a great game for next year. The team has got the time to be able to look at everything that we need to do to make sure that we bring quality back up and be competitive. So we can go over the whole story again from last year - it was unfortunate, but we’re a brand and a company and a label that is very focused on building quality and we’re not just going to walk away from it; we’ve got a very, very talented team that’s already got stuff up and running even though it won't ship this year, it'll go next year. So we’ll be back."

Even if the quality can come close to what 2K Sports offers, there's no denying that the NBA brand from EA Sports has taken a hit, and that alone could mean years of recovery time to win back the fans. Moore acknowledged this but he also relishes the challenge and has the utmost confidence in the team's ability to build a very competitive NBA title.

"It’ll take a while to get back, yeah. It’ll take us a few years maybe, but if that’s what it takes, that's what it'll be. We’re in our 20th year as a label... We’re not a short term player. It’s not going to happen overnight, but we’ll sit here 3, 4 years from now and hopefully we’ll be talking about what a great battle NBA 14 or 15 is versus their 14 or 15," he concluded.

I haven't played Live since 2004 I believe. 2K came in and just crushed the buildings. Live had an arcade feel to them, 2K was more sim. Live tried to turn things around with Live 2010 They hired a NBA 2K producer to do the game that year but they didn't get the sales they wanted the first year so they started a whole new engine, new physics and I think the producer who did NHL for EA thinking that he can bring in some of his control improvements to a basketball title. That was supposed to be Elite and they were going a whole different direction last year. The Jesus Bynum video hits youtube and it was a wrap for Live/Elite last year they knew that would have hurt them more. EA might make another bb game but most likely on the next generation consoles. 2K is so far ahead of them I will find it hard for them to slack off.

Nah that shit is over. You cannot take a few seasons off and come back.Especially with a different name.Going from Live after all these years to Elite will hurt the brand anyway.

true.. especially if 2ksports keeps putting out great quality nba2k games...

For 1 2k plays like a real NBA game for 2 it's more realistic with player moves and gameplay. And the graphics aregreat.

Live started to become like NBA Jam plus there graphic were shitty and the gameplay is terrible now. Man NBA LIVE 10 was so God Awful words can't explain it.

started playing live in 96 (i believe duncan was on the cover) and stopped playing it in 06. If you playing any other nba game then 2k you lost. And that 2k nfl game went way harder than madden. Madden would be non-existent if they didnt buy those rights. Only thing EA is good for is FIFA. They not even good for fight night anymore

Basically what I wanted to say................

The moment I played 2K on DreamCast, I knew it was a don(e) dada for Live. That shyt is on a completely different stratosphere for all the aforementioned reasons.

live started to fall when they added that superstar bullshit (ex. kobe-scorer shaq-power)

Live was always a step behind.....I always likened Live fans to ppl who only buy Sony....its like it didn't matter if the competition actually had a better product u just stuck with what u knew and what people sold u on, on some stubborn shit.....Only thing Live had better than 2K was the soundtracks and having the license to Jordan for years after he retired...Live was never better than 2K

i used to love this game then it just turned to pure garbage. I think like 98 and 99 were the last time i even played it. Once 2k dropped the game play was just light years better. EA got lazy. The players never dunked missed lay ups and just so many glitches that were never fixed.

Pre-Draft Interviews: Before draft night, Ronnie must go through a rigorous interview process with multiple GM's vying for his talents. Depending on one's answers, character will be judged and draft value may soar or plummet. The Bobcats are interested in Ronnie, but is he interested in going to Charlotte?
