winter meetings start in 7 days

Deadline thursday for a new cba agreement. If there is a lock out they could still have hot stove season under the old rules until a tentative agreement

The qo thing is cool Edit they're proposing a 10 round international draft

Want the cubs to go after smyly from the rays to use him in the andrew miller lefty multiple innings reliever role

Sign john jay(1 year deal) to platoon wit almora in cf or acquire blackmon from the rockies

Pipe dream sign kenley jansen.Don't really think they need anything else

i think securing some reasonably priced starting pitching is on theo radar

really interested to see what montgomery can do as a full time starter if he gets the chance with his nasty off speed stuff but they have to start planning for replacing lackey and probably arietta too and it doesnt seem like there is a guy in the system right now ready to fill a big key role within a year right now

or is there?

i like the idea of buying low on shelby miller but im really finding it hard to figure what the market for him could be

itd be cool if they flipped soler for him even if that seems extremely risky on the chicago end but that may even seem too light to arizona after giving up swanson just a year ago

tough to gauge value here

i guess that explains the reason the dodgers have been operating the way they have since friedman came along

most of their big contract guys were under colletti and most of them will be off the books by next year

just in time for otani

I do too but the asking price may be too high.I want the cubs to keep ian happ cuz he's ben zobrist 2.0 and he should be ready by '18 so that leaves no real chips to trade besides jimenez(I wouldn't trade him). The cubs have rob z,ryan williams and another dude I can't remember who can be 5/6 starters next year

in '18 trevor clifton should be ready for the bigs he's a 3/4 starter, dylan cease or oscar de la cruz I'd say '19 maybe '20 so the cubs will need to replace arrieta and lackey next off season 2 of darvish, tanaka or otani would be ideal I'd be cool wit any one of these 3.Basically the wave of homegrown pitching is 2 years away

also soler may be used to acquire drew smyly

yeah i like happ and jiminez looks every bit the part

but word i have a feeling they wont end up selling as low as i think

and not just to save face either

miller is still under team control through 2019 and the opportunity to turn around a controllable asset with huge upside holds a lot of value in this current weak FA market + there is no incentive to make a deal with his value at its lowest since there are other players they could move to clear cap space

And this is why I hated trading gleyber torres for a rental cuz after his afl mvp he's gonna be a top 10 prospect next year THAT's the chip you can use to headline a trade this winter for a tor starter

Don't get me wrong the world series win trumps everything but that was a super high price to pay for a dude who helped but didn't dominate in the playoffs and now is a fa.Hindsight is 20/20 strop and rondon both got injured so that's why I can't trip but It still kind of hurts cuz torres could of been used to get an ace.I'd love to get shelby miller and I read the d backs are willing to trade one of their young starters but basically the bolded.

you tell me would i trade torres for a 1 year rental closer if it meant winning the world series and i say hell yeah because while chapman didnt dominate i dont think the cubs win the world series without him -- now he did almost blow it but getting out THAT inning was as impressive (probably more lucky) as him closing out the giants because he had nothing

good thing for theo they won because if they didnt

MAN

with the 100 years curse thing off the cubs back i see him playing it more safe now because trading a chip like that for a closer IS crazy let alone a rental

gotta hope someone buys in on soler raw power but i imagine he has very little trade value right now -- if youre trading him and prospects to get a #2 type starter that means youre probably including happ or jimenez and i wouldnt want to do that trade -- id rather the cubs take a shot at picking up another under the radar guy like montgomery was to try out this year and buy a starter next year when the starting pitching market is much better

and this is why the white sox are the white sox

way to fuck up any kind of leverage

organization ran by meatheads

Yea you at least make it seem like you would make a trade wit the cubs to make other teams up the ante

Realistically I doubt the cubs would pay the price if it was an option

i think conley/chen/bour being out for extended periods just killed the marlins

easily shouldve been over .500 and been in the WC

its just was a crazy season from dee suspension to jose at the end

lots of positives though

ozuna/yelich/realmuto especially

"White Sox get 2B Yoan Moncada, RHP Michael Kopech, C Blake Swihart and LHP Eduardo Rodriguez. Red Sox get LHP Chris Sale and 1B Jose Abreu."

"Pirates get RHP Jose De Leon and 1B Cody Bellinger. Dodgers get OF Andrew McCutchen."

"Rays get 2B/OF Ian Happ, RF Jorge Soler, OF Albert Almora and RHP Carl Edwards. Cubs get RHP Chris Archer, CF Kevin Kiermaier and RHP Alex Colome."

http://www.espn.com/blog/the-gms-office/insider/post?id=13396

packaging both sale and abreu for that return seems excessive and would prefer selling them separately for 2 impact players instead of quantity

if hahn needs to add abreu in order for the red sox to come off moncada then nah

and i almost feel like the rays could trade colome for a kings ransom because after what we witnessed in the last couple of world series -- the value of relief pitchers has grown -- between what the market will pay a chapman or jansen to how the bullpen as a whole is now viewed i feel colome and his cost controlled contract could fetch AT LEAST 1 blue chip

I'd make this trade in a heart beat this is a lopsided trade in the cubs favor
