I think we are speaking on two separate things. I am talking about the subject matter of NY MC's particularly MC's from the 80's to mid 90's not being universal to all regions. I am from NY but I live in .Atl (have for 12+ years now). So, I understand the differences in culture, geography and demographics. I think the fact that these other elements don't go hand in hand with Hip Hop have hurt the growth of Hip Hop. So, from certain regions not just the south we are stuck with only bits and pieces. I think the West coast is the only other region that has embraced Hip Hop in all it's forms.

This is interesting. "The city where Gucci Mane won't claim".... and then there was a Joe Budden Pump It Up reference. Let the people on the IC tell it, niggas like this don't even know who Joe Budden is. Nice drop.

Don't say that like the Midwest doesn't embrace Hip Hop in all forms because it does. Chicago, Cleveland, Detroit, St. Louis, etc.

I'm not saying they do not or have not but the midwest doesn't compare to NY or CALI in this regard.

Proof? Because I live in Chicago where rap cyphers go down on a daily basis, graffitti can be found from the hood to downtown, b-boying is a mandatory tradition in every public high school, and commercial radio DJ's like DJ Pharris, DJ Nephits, and DJ Scratch still scratch, blend, mix, and flip everyday on radio and in the clubs. Now how does that not compare to NY or Cali?

I agree. I think in rap's early days, New York got away with bein able to rap about regional or local things because they were the only ones puttin out rap music. If you wanted to listen to rap in the 80's, you had to listen to NY rap. Eventually Ice-T came out on the West Coast and The Geto Boys came out of the South, but still the majority of rappers signed to (or distributed by) major labels came from NY. And I'm not dissin NY, I'm just sayin at that time, they had the game on lock.

No, I don't feel any region's music or its fans are dumber than me. I feel like dumb people are dumber than me.

I'm actually more inclined to look at you sideways if you DON'T accept the different regions or subsidiaries of hip-hop. To me that signals close mindedness which IMO is just as, or even moreso, detrimental as being stupid.

I think being in the midwest has helped cultivate my mindset into what it is today, meaning I don't care where it's from as long as it's dope. I can remember running to the record store grabbing No Limit's different colored albums and Wu-Tang and Bone all in one fell swoop.

But to be 100 about it all, the South is the region that's on top right now, and it's been this way for awhile. So naturally the music there, good or bad, is going to be pushed to the masses more than other regions.

^^So, a person should accept mediocrity in fear of being labeled close minded? I don't think it matters what region is, perceived as being on top. I think the quality of music from that region is, what should be discussed. I think it says alot about Record Labels and their agenda's to push a certain sound when, the best artists from that region aren't getting the majority of the support and push.

Oh yeah GREAT AVI.

if a cat can pick hot beats and have a nice flow and decent/good rhymes then great, i'm talking about giving a pass to those bum rappers like lil b, gucci mane etc because they pick hot beats or it bangs in the whip.

What you mean "give a pass" to? Y'all niggas up north fuck with the so called "wack" rappers just as much as ppl down here do. Please believe Gucci didn't get as big as he is now with just support from the south. Y'all online eastcoast fans are not a true representation of the buying public up north. Didn't Lil B just have a huge concert in NY recently??

Thx @ avi. But I wasn't saying that you should accept mediocrity in terms of southern music. Trust me when I say there's a plethora of southern artists that can stop rapping today and tomorrow I will shout my gratitude to the heavens from on top of the highest point in Cleveland. Though I don't feel as strongly about "bad" east coast or west coast rappers, there are still some that I view as a waste as well.

What I meant in my previous post was that, if someone were to cast aside an artist like Krit, only because he's from Mississippi, then they would most likely get a "C'mon Son!" from me.

Disregarding talent based on region is close minded no matter which way you slice it.

Respect!! I feel comfortable saying that the MAJORITY of Hip Hoppers don't care about where someone is, from. I think when the argument is made the examples that are given aren't based on someone's region. I think this is evidenced by the success and respect of artists such as Goodie, Kast and Ghetto boys. I think this new crop of cats from the south will get the same respect and may have similar success. However, even they are being outdone by the lowest of the low down here.

lets everybody is in this thread keep it 100 right now. Hip hop is in trouble and we in here trying to find somebody to blame. Instead of trying to figure out solutions. How can we make the music better , how we can put the talented artists to the forefront and get the flavor of month niggas, the wack rappers and speculators out the fucking game. the 4 major labels have turn hip hop into some techno cirque du soleil shit. that's whos to blame , them and all the artists that put the dollar before integrity. We need to cut the majors out and take it back to how it was done before which is independent record labels and the fans supporting their favorites and not worrying about (insert wack nigga here) is doing or putting out. We need to come together as a culture. fuck all that divide and conquer bullshit.

Good points. But it wasn't the east, north or anywhere in between. Gucci got backing from a Major and from there was able to make moves. Similar to Jeezy. Jeezy didn't make BIG moves until his deal with Def Jam. I know this personally as I know his former manager and would see him often around the way. The record labels determine who is going to be the next in thing. Once that's done they put the pedal to the metal. "Turn my swag on" is good music? Damn.

You mentioned Mississippi... I immediately thought about David Banner. Grown ass man, intelligent and articulate, and still desperately tries to cater to the mindless club audience. He dumbs down to the point where I can't even respect him. He's college educated at that.

The impact of "Turn My Swag On" is commendable, but we keep fighting each other when mainstream catches on. That's why people keep saying "Hip Hop is dead, the state of Hip Hop is bad" because we don't know how to pick our battles.

But at the same time, the "artists" themselves don't make an effort to improve their craft. Soulja Boy went from "Superman dat ho" to "Turn my swag on" to "Pretty Boy Swag". There is no improvement in the quality.

It's not much you can do about major labels because we're constantly being refreshed with new generations of kids whose first experience with rap music is whatever comes on the radio and tv.

Where does personal accountability come into play? You can't get mad at people for thinking Southerners are less intelligent when they are being given reasonable evidence. For example, you're from the South and your lack of proper punctuation is astounding. I'm not trying to diss you, but seriously, use commas and semicolons.

This thread is inspired by a couple of posts I've seen. Let's put it out there so that in the future, when people start talking their shit, we can look back here and say "Oh, he's just saying that because he thinks he's better than people down South."

As a TRUE Hip Hop purist, it's important to understand EVERYONE'S point of view. Everything that has an appeal, has an appeal for a reason. People that you think are dumb don't look at you and wonder why you listen to (insertsuperlyricalorbattlerapper), so why is it so hard for you to understand why they like who they like? Whether it be Webbie, Lil Boosie, Waka Flocka, Lil B, Wiz Khalifa, Travis Porter, etc., they make music that somebody somewhere likes for some reason. It may be content, it may be geographical, it may be anything. You don't have to like it, but at the very least, understand it.

So, tell the truth... do you think you're smarter than the average Southerner? Admit your bias.

This is a pretty DEEP thread to say the least!

I always felt the south (and other parts of the country) wanted to share in the hip hop experience, but their stories was radically different than the NY-style of hip hop. Although the grind and the passion was their, the linguistics and slang was completely separated.

So, I wouldn't necessarily say that the north is smarter; I think the south is just expressing what it knows... and that is the centerpiece of hip hop- expression.

The one thing that personally bothers me is the lack of lyricism; the rhymes styles are pretty amateurish indeed. No depth in their vocals abilities or skill level. Just ride the music and bounce....

The north was all about the delivery, but even here, these young cats are lost; they have changed the art of battlin to some dumb down BS that is useless and irrelevant.

One of my pet peeves is seeing a rapper rhyme over his own lyrics on stage... wtf? How can a rapper lip sync is own music? What ever happened to instrumentals or show music? Now, its like.. play the CD from FYI and we'll just rap over it!! UGH!!
