To Combat Racial Bias by Airbnb Hosts, Try Blind Reservations

A new Harvard study found racial discrimination by Airbnb hosts -- a poignant reminder that new technology doesn't automatically eliminate old problems.

As Bloomberg Business reported, researchers at the Harvard Business School found that people with names that sounded African-American had a harder time booking a place to stay on Airbnb than people with names like this correspondent's. The authors conducted a field experiment that examined 6,400 listings on Airbnb in five cities, concluding that "requests from guests with distinctively African-American names are roughly 16% less likely to be accepted than identical guests with distinctively White names."

That difference was the same regardless of whether the host was African-American, white or female, whether the property was expensive or cheap, or whether the host shared the property. The bias came at a price for hosts as well. According to the researchers, hosts who rejected guests they believed were African-American found a replacement guest just 35 percent of the time.

One approach that corporations and nonprofits like the Sunlight Foundation have used in recent years to increase the diversity of their hiring pools is to use "blind auditions."

In blind hiring, applicants separate information that identifies them -- like their name -- from their qualifications, expressed in a resume, cover letter, and portfolio of design or software projects.

The technique, applied to on-demand companies like Airbnb and Uber, that might express itself as showing a potential host or driver someone's rating and reviews, but not a name.

"We are committed to making Airbnb one of the most open, trusted, diverse, transparent communities in the world," a company spokesperson told The Huffington Post. "We recognize that bias and discrimination are significant challenges, and we welcome the opportunity to work with anyone that can help us reduce potential discrimination in the Airbnb community. We are in touch with the authors of this study and we look forward to a continuing dialogue with them."

As platforms like LinkedIn, Uber and TaskRabbit take on increased importance in the on-demand economy, it's incumbent upon operators of these services to address demonstrated bias. Otherwise, 21st century platforms for collaborative consumption will just embed social biases from the cultures they exist within.

For its part, Airbnb says it doesn’t support discrimination. “Airbnb is one of the most open, trusted, diverse, transparent communities in the world,” a spokesperson said in a statement sent to Bloomberg. “We respond quickly to any concerns raised by hosts or guests, and we have a zero-tolerance policy for discrimination on our platform.”

Who tf he talking to?

Same excuses all the time. Like black people don't face discrimination at every fucking thing we apply to.

This is more "water is wet" type research. It's really already been proven that having a black sounding name will add some strife to your life. A study like this doesn't really serve any purpose by itself. What I want to see is researchers go the extra step. Nail down why these people don't want to service black people. Is it just raw racism, as in the owners don't like blacks? Probably not given that the same trend was consistent for black owners too. I'm pretty sure the reality is that most of these owners have a preconception that blacks in general are harder to deal with and more prone to damaging or mistreating property. If that's the case, this study should have been about comparing white customers to black customers. If the results to that study showed, that there was no difference or that whites were worse customers, then the study should be put out there for everyone to see and maybe that would help change things. Hell, if the study reinforced the stereotype, then I guess we blacks would have to shut the fuck up with our complaining, and I'm sure white people would love that just as much.

I had to Google Airbnb. Private homes tend to be picky. I know I would screen hard, so idk about the level of diss here. But then again I have no desire to spend my money where I'm not wanted.

i mean its my crib so i can discriminate if want to.

Not if you're using Airbnb to drum up customers.

not anyone can come live at my crib if i dont want them to tho.

I'm sure there are rules, but turning someone down solely for the color of their skin won't fly. I mean I believe you should be able to do that if you run a BnB. You just can't do it and expect to be sponsored.

They have every right to discriminate. I damn sure don't want blind profiles and have me walking into some grand wizards home cause he thought Ginger was a safe name. That would be very awkward.

Not that people aren't racist, but maybe not having a picture on their profile contributed to the discrimination.

I don't think any of the made up profiles had pictures. That was the point of the study.

I'm sure these studies are for whites and the ATalentedOnes in our society bc every nigga knows what they face from the time their feet hit the floor in the morning from doing the most mundane tasks to life changing events, racism can effect ever aspect at any time

So you're saying that the people who were clearly making racist decisions based on the names of the applicants would be less likely to make those same racist decisions if they could see for certain if a person was black?

In what universe would that even be a logical assumption?

Thanks for helping to confirm what I have been saying: The main people saying I'm a coon are fucking dumbasses.

That comment in no way shape or form downplays racism, and only an idiot would think that.

I said Scalia's comment was ambiguous: that it wasn't clear if he was saying that we naturally can't compete in rigorous programs, or most of us are better off in less rigorous programs because we receive inferior schooling at lower educational levels. The more evidence that has come to light makes it more clear that he meant the latter, and that isn't racist, even if it is not true.
