Most of people on this site have no idea. Freestyle is defined as a rhyme with no form or format by the old skool cats. Off the dome is defined as a spontaneous or impromptu rhyme. So, the first problem with most in this post is they are once again lumping things together that don't belong together. I am not a big fan of off the dome rappers and I do not think it takes major skills to do that. All you have to do is always rap on the same cadence to be good at rhyming off the dome. It would seem that good freestyle rappers should also be good rappers because it can be written, but that is rarely the case. I doubt if Pac was good at either freestyles or off the dome and he was more intelligent than atleast 95% of rappers to ever get any mainstream recognition. Freestyle and off the dome are blown out of proportion

I gotta respectfully disagree with your view here. Infact I couldn't disagree more. When people freestyle and get in a zone with it I think they tappin into a certain level of consciousness in the brain to be able to do what they do. Supernatural, probably the greatest off the top dude ever said in order to be able to do what he do he has to be able to stay a bar ahead in his mind. That's not easy to do if you haven't wrote it down. Kurupt said a real Mc can adjust off of any beat change off the top and not everybody can do that, just the ones that's good at it or the freestyle starts coming off sloppy or offbeat. It's just like everybody can't produce good beats either even tho you might can fool around with a beat machine or software enough to put together the basics. Good producers know what sounds go with what and what pattens go together and which ones don't generally work. You have to have an ear for it and freestyle rappers are similar in it takes a certain kind of talent to be able to do it and sound above average. They often say you using your 3rd eye when in the zone, seeing the words before they come out. If it took little skill then any old random rapper would be able to do it and sound affective. Maybe I grew up listening to a guy like Mc Juice rhyme about random things in the radio station and words the host would throw out and he'd put it right in the next bar. Maybe I got too many cassette tapes of Kurupt and his lil bro going in for like five minutes at a time without breaks or mistakes. No you don't need to be able to do it to be a successful rapper but that don't mean Freestyin efficiently off the top isn't an Art form of its own.

Was JUST about to argue his point. I'm by no means a Drake fan or anything like that but truth is you don't have to freestyle in order to be a good rapper. A rapper is someone who can write lyrics that rhyme, freestyle is coming up with lyrics right there on the spot and y'all can't expect everybody to do that or to do it good. Some artists need to write down their lyrics to really paint a picture and get a visual, some people might need to smoke weed, some rappers might not be able to come up with rhymes quickly etc. I've always thought that people put way too much emphasis on freestyles.

Bottom line can you rap good? Can you write a good song with some substance? Do you have a good catalogue? Who gives a fuck about a damn freestyle. Shit Nas is one of the GOAT's and he's not a good freestyler at all and almost always have pre-written shit, same thing with alot of our other favorites so it shouldn't be that important.

then why the hell would you participate in a freestyel session... it's a waste of everyone's time
