Public Enemy

I think you misunderstood what this thread is or atleast I hope you did

Its the only song they made that got into the top 40. That technically makes them one hit wonders

What about bring the noise, welcome to the terrordome, Fight the power, 911 is a joke, dont believe the hype, public enemy #1, etc. Those songs are before I was born but im sure they were hits. Its just no way in hell one of the most popular hip hop groups are one hit wonders

I know what @genocidecutter means.

Rap was an underground thing in the 80s., The only rap that got played on the radio was Salt N Pepa, MC Hammer and Run DMC. Otherwise you had to stay up late at night to hear it on the radio or tune in to Yo! MTV Raps or rap City to catch the videos. New York had Video Music Box.

Public Enemy had classic records and I'm pretty sure their albums went gold or platinum but their music didn't get played on the radio the way Drake, Lil Wayne and Nicki Minaj get played on the radio nowadays. Things were different.

Bruh...he's right in the technical sense, if we are to define hit as "top 40". But let's expand that criteria to Top 100, which plenty of top lists go by.

Under that criteria Public Enemy only has two hits. But by the same criteria, @genocidecutter's own Insane Clown Posse only has one hit...making them one hit wonders.

However, when you look at Public Enemy's single's list on wikipedia, they have 4 #1's on the Top US Rap list but neither of those charted on the Top List for all music, meaning not a single rap song charted in the Top 100 during that time period. Meaning that until a certain point in time, charting singles meant shit for this genre.

That said, comparison of Public Enemy to ICP is completely ridiculous b/c Public Enemy is in the public consciousness when it comes to mentioning hip hop acts of the late 80's and early 90's. Their influence is undeniable and recognized by people of all genres and walks of life. They've also had constant charting in the UK, making them influential internationally. ICP on the other hand, have only charted twice in the UK since 1989. Public Enemy also has the distinction of not being remembered for wearing clown makeup or talking shit and calling on a radio caller to fight only to pussy out when that one guy comes to the studio.

Then again, ICP has charted higher than Hot Boys too (also technically a one-hit wonder by the same criteria, since they've only had one single ever chart in spite of album sales....according to wikipedia)

JT Money not a one hit wonder...Just want to get that straight

B. Rich - Whoa Now

Craig Mack - Flava in Your Ear Remix

Jeru The Damaja - Come Clean

Camp Lo - Luchini

Digable Planets - Cool Like That

Jeru? Seriously?

What other hit did Jeru have? Refresh my mind

Correct me if I'm wrong, this a thread about HITS not artists who had solid albums.

Digable Planets and Camp Lo also had good albums but no other hits besides the ones I posted in the vid so I'm not sure why yall acting confused

They all had multiple songs that charted and got radio and club spins.

Lol

Jimi Hendrix and grateful dead only had one hit in the top 40 as well, are they one hit wonders too?

Sometimes you "technical" ppl try and get too smart for your own good.

One hit has a connotation to it that is broader than the textbook definition. Public enemy is in fucking rock n roll hall of fame for their influence on not only hip-hop but society as a whole, there discography is studied in colleges u ignorant fuck. Those accomplishments automatically take you out of one hit wonder competition.

U know this u ignoramus. Stop trolling

This song got played 24/7 in Boston for about 3 or 4 years after it came out. They had a few other songs that got a lil play but this is what they're known for.

It Takes Two - Rob Base and DJ EZ Rock
