u r misinterpreting what a few rappers were trying to convey...lol

and knowing that being caught is a possibility is not the same as believing u will get caught... its a fact that criminals do not rationally calculate the risk of being caught when committing crimes... not debatable.

u take it as rappers equating manhood to street life... We see it as men describing their environments...

them lines aint an embrace of prison culture... its an acknowledgment of reality... the fuck they supposed to say? "I'll snitch if i get caught!"...lol stopitfive

There's a difference between describing your environment which some rappers do, and those who do what is the topic right now which is equating how deep one is in the streets to how much of a man they are. There's a difference but you're pretending as if the latter doesn't exist at all. I never said all rappers equate street life to man hood but for you not to see that some did and still do is just ridiculous and you trying to be difficult. Funny thing is, whether it's rappers equating manhood to street life or them merely describing their environment there's still no getting around the fact that in some instances being in the streets=being a man to some. That's not debatable. Too many people who've lived that life and later spoke on how young and dumb their idea of manhood was for it to not have some truth to it. It's a false equivalency, but it exists none the less. No they not supposed to be like "I'ma snitch if I get caught"...but to so casually mention going to prison as if it's just a part of how things are is a sign of a problem. Majority of people don't view going to prison as something to say "fuck it, it is what it is" type attitude. The fact that mentality exists is where the problem lies, and that attitude is there in hip-hop. Not as big as it once was, but it's there.

something existing is not the same as it being the overall theme...

Digital Underground rapped about the Humpty Dance so hip hop is Humpty dance culture... thats what y'all logic is...

Find where I said it's the overall theme? t's a part of hip-hop, but find where I said it's the overarching theme to what hip-hop is about? Thats' where your misunderstanding is coming in. I responded to your post talking about it being an added part...clearly meaning it's not encompassing the whole. Like I said you're being purposely difficult and not just contradicting your own posts

y'all can't even define prison culture... y'all think prison culture is centered around rape...

i'm not saying this is 100% right, but i find it interesting

paul mooney on this very topic

turn to minute 3:30

That's my man, but he can't substantiate any of that... He also contradicted himself...

The prison rape myth comes from tv and movies, but no one calls American cinema prison culture...

This is funny given that right now Planet Rock: The Story of Hip Hop and The Crack Generation is on right now talking about Schooly D's song

Prisons have hierarchies like everything else in life. Unlike the corporate world, or the school world, or the culinary world, or the literature world, or the automotive world in prison male rape can and often is a means of exhibiting superiority over others. It is one of the few environments where this is very prevalent.

The prison rape myth is not completely a myth - it is actually alleged to be so damn prevalent that when prison rape is accounted for men are victims of rape more than women.

Interestingly enough the idea of making one your bitch is shared in both gangsta rap and prison.

That article doesn't substantiate your implication that rape is cultural for inmates, nor that rape is some important element of gangsta rap...

Let's also ignore the fact that them lyrics ain't always literal... I guess Canibus is literally the lyrical version of German engineering...

But the plethora of lyrics about rape do show that rape is an element of gangsta rap. Also you alleged prison rape is a myth and that last post clearly shows it is not a myth.

you would have to do an extensive content analysis to prove that hip hop has/makes more references to male rape than movies, tv, books, etc... u can't and won't...

that article did not prove that the prison rape myth is a real thing... it argues that prison rape occurs and measuring it is difficult...

And it alludes to the papers that have gone about making estimates and drawing figures and shows that when prison rape is accounted such efforts have shown that men are victims of rape at higher rates than women. It is not a myth if it is really happening.

How isn't rape a common element in gangsta rap among some gangsta rappers when platinum selling artists, as quoted above, such as DMX, Eminem, Tupac, Biggie Smalls, Gucci Mane and more use if frequently?

What's craziest is that there's a Mos Def quote up there. Even 'conscious' rappers are doing it.

I just watch the video & I had to GOAT it

These hoe ass rap niggas more obsessed with fashion than lyrics these days. wearing skinny jeans & skirts, you look like a industry hoe

the figures presented in that article are unclear... they even admit it... they made no real conclusions... they can't say whether prison rape is more prevalent than non-prisoner rape...

They got an estimate of 216,000 incidents. Rape outside the prison system is estimated at 213,000. How is this unclear?

Their numbers might not be the most accurate but the meaning of the data is not unclear

the article that that article cites for those numbers states:

Overall, most victims were abused not by other inmates but, like Jan, by corrections staff: agents of our government, paid with our taxes, whose job it is to keep inmates safe.

An estimated 65,700 inmates, including 6,800 juveniles, had sex with staff “willingly.”

you're misrepresenting the results and what those articles are saying, bruh...

they don't even break the numbers down by sex in the original article...

I see what you're saying now.

Even if you subtract the consensual sex, which is considered rape on the basis of staff being in positions of authority, then the number is still 150,300 which is significant. Significant enough that you can't call prison rape a myth as though it's rare or uncommon.
