Kill Bill actually came from the Japanese flick Lady Snowblood. That's where Tarantino bit adapted Kill Bill off of.

Alex haley was a very lazy writer, which is why to some it felt to simplistic. Shit, look at the Autobiography of Malcolm X that was basically a made up story about Malcolm's life.
