So what if Spike Lee made a holocaust movie then dissed Schindler s List.......lol

see this is my problem. i did see django and to see a room full of black 20 somethings laugh at stuff that is racist during the movie bothered me. Tarantino is playing off the ignorance. However it is not horribly done. How he got black folks to play slaves is amazing to me how desperate where they for jobs

why couldn't Tarantino make a Nat turner movie or a Harriet Tubman movies ( honestly how is there no Harriet Tubman movie ).

my wife was like i wasn't offended then i explained to her that we know better we know slavery wasn't some western movie. Will the young people know. as a teacher i can tell no most of them will not.

and just like @elzo69revolutions said you cant make a parody of the Holocaust. where is the movie where a Jew escapes Auschwitz and returns to get his girl and kill Nazis. it dosent exist you know why cause Jewish folks wont let the Holocaust been seen as anything but tragic.

but slavery is fair game.

roots was important though because it gave a vast audience of different backgrounds much needed insight about slavery on a large scale that people wouldnt of received anywhere else. if any thing it was inauthentic because slavery was much harsher.

haven't watched the movie.. don't know if I should

but did the movie ever say where it was set since it was a western?

They ain go at it Denzel sonned him and Tarantino took it.... denzel mentioned it when he was promoting American Gangster on 106 and Park

roots was more about the the family ( Haleys) than slavery what you gotta understand is it showed a black family in a positive light they struggled delt with slavery and remained a family. they where smart and capable. they made a point in django to say that django is a 1 in 10,000 slave.

more violence in roots is not what the story needed nor was the violence of slaver what roots was about

I know it's the popular thing to say that it was hard for Alex Haley to get Roots made and put on tv, but that would be very far from the truth. In reality it Roots very easy for him to get made and placed. A.H. Worked for CBS at the time and very deep connections, he was widely reported to be on the payroll of the FBI. It's already been proven he changed most of Malcolm's words. Another thing that is not mentioned about Alex Haley was that he supported the revisionist history movement that was being conducted at the time. He supported the white washing of history books and is not supported by serious historians and archivist in the world of academia. Simply, he was a fraud.

Shaka Zulu was the goat, but it still was very inauthentic.

Shaka Zulu was epic.....his ether game>>>>>>>>

A lot of people forgot about Shaka Zulu TV series. It showed everything and was authentic as it gets. Better than ROOTS if you ask me.

I didn't...Shaku Zulu was raw as it can get. Always liked it and it's mad slept on.

This Nigga Made A Cowboy Slavery Movie But He Wants To Shit On Roots For Not Being Authentic? Just Because Your Flicks Is Getting Rave Reviews Doesn't Give You The Right To Shit On Joints That Came Before You That Dealt With Similar Subject Matter... Cracka Please

He's actually right. One of his examples was when Chicken George refused to beat the white man after he was caught. Shit is unrealistic.

BUt E2Sup makes a good point about TV being tame back then. Hell it's still tame to my standards.

I ve seen one tyler perry movie.....daddy s little girls

I don't think that's his movie but he had some kind of producing credit.

Daddy's Little Girl was Tyler's movie; he wrote and directed it. Its sad that this movie wasn't as successful because it was actually pretty good. If it ain't about Medea or some battered, down-and-out woman, nobody wants to support it.

Now Tarantino is the recipient of the other raised eyebrow.

The fearless — some might say reckless — director says that Alex Haley’s “Roots” is “inauthentic.”

Yes, clutch your pearls and grab the smelling salts. “Roots,” that Black cultural touchstone that makes White Americans glance at their Black comrades with trepidation after BET plays it on repeat over the holidays, has been deemed “inauthentic” by white as the driven snow Tarantino.

“When you look at Roots, nothing about it rings true in the storytelling, and none of the performances ring true for me either,” said Tarantino. “I didn’t see it when it first came on, but when I did I couldn’t get over how oversimplified they made everything about that time. It didn’t move me because it claimed to be something it wasn’t.”

But slavery contextualized as a Spaghetti Western is authentic storytelling?

newsone.com/2114168/quentin-tarantino-roots-inauthentic/

He ain't sayin nothing that black folks haven't already been sayin for years. Probably he just sayin something that he heard his black friends say.

But yeah, it really disgusted me how BET played that shit for holidays.

He's actually right about Roots. Alex Haley plagiarized Roots from a book called "the African" written by a white author. Alex haley was a very lazy writer, which is why to some it felt to simplistic. Shit, look at the Autobiography of Malcolm X that was basically a made up story about Malcolm's life. It had so much false information that it could be called a work of fiction. Also he was sued by the original author for it.

Actually it was only a section of "Roots" that was claimed to be Plagiarized. Regardless, Alex Haley wrote his book and it was about HIS family. "Roots" is a 1,000 times more Authentic than "Django". It's not even in the same planet. Also the Autobiography of Malcolm X is a Classic just like the movie. No Autobiography is 100% accurate.

Many doubt that story is even about his family. People have researched this shit for years and found things that don't match up with what Alex Haley said.
