One Fraternity Is Taking 'White Christmas' To A Whole New Level

Unfortunately, these kinds of events keep cropping up at institutions of higher learning.

Earlier this year, the Tau Kappa Epsilon fraternity at Arizona State University found a different way to celebrate Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. They hosted an "MLK Black Party," where attendees were clad in basketball jerseys, sagging jeans, caps, sunglasses and held drinks in watermelon cups — playing not only on "thug" tropes but also the racial stereotypes about food. The chapter was eventually expelled from the university.

In July 2013 two Greek organizations at Dartmouth collaborated on a "Bloods vs. Crips" party, where some students carried around 40-ounce bottles of beer and malt liquor in brown paper bags. Around 200 students were in attendance; an email invitation had instructed them to "choose wisely" which gang they'd represent.

It may seem redundant, but "dressing up" as gang members and "thugs" is neither clever nor funny. These stereotypes are one of the many ways racism permeates our culture, with the end result being that black people are seen as inherently other — and lesser — than the white people masquerading as them. These types of parties expose the underlying issues that prop up racial biases, while also highlighting how far we need to go in terms of sensitivity and equality.

In a context where black people are routinely profiled or killed while unarmed, this incident shows that racial tensions still exist and implicit bias colors everyday interactions. Clearly, white students have the privilege of moving through the world not worrying whether their racial identity is a liability. "White Christmas," indeed.

Ehhh, I don't know. Seems like they are making fun more of gang culture than blacks. If you automatically assume that gang culture = black culture, then you're pretty much doing the thing the article is claiming the fraternity was doing. At least no one was in black face. That's something...I guess.

Regardless, how you feel about the situation, those CACs are going to get themselves killed. SC has a gang problem and some of them are still doing things like "shoot a random person" to join. I don't think it's a stretch for a few of them to take shots at the white kids making fun of them.

They had watermelon cups tho..

The lengths that Lonious Monk dude goes to defend the actions of whites in damn near every 'look at what white people are doing' thread posted on here is also confusing to me as well.

What length did I go to. I pointed out that its a gang themed party not a "Black Party" (which they've actually done before). And I pointed out that gang culture and black culture are not one in the same. Those are facts. I'm not saying they aren't on some racist shit. I don't know whats going through the minds of those fools. I'm just saying that looking at someone make fun of gangs and then automatically claim they are making fun of black people in general is basically equating black people to gangs which is exactly the same thing they are being accused of doing.

When you can show me the part where I said what they did was ok or appropriate, then you might have a point about me defending them. Good luck on that.

so how bout black fraternities throw a party.. or black people in general throw a party and clown the bowels of white society..

have couples wear "he's my brother" and "she's my sister" shirts?? and take pics kissing and groping. lol

or a bitch bring a pet to the party and be like "I'm with him"??

i swear y'all get trolled so easy..

oh yeh..

and didn't read!

At what point does common sense kick in and say maybe this is offensive to a specific group.

Anything involving race, sexual orientation, religious theme party, etc. Just don't!

What's the purpose of the 2 Pac shirt? He wasn't in a gang?

Ok, and that means what? They are dressing the way they believe gangbangers dress. Where a shirt with a dude that represented "Thug Life" everytime he picked up a mic isn't exactly a crazy choice for something a banger might wear.

Let me ask you a question. Are you a gangbanger? Do you look at what they are doing and feel like they are doing something that represents you? See I'm black and I've never been in a gang. I don't dress like they are dressed in those pics. I never dressed like the people in that picture. All my friends and associates are black. None of them dress like that or act like. The point I'm making is that they are attacking a certain subculture that happens to be largely black (contrary to what the article says not all crips or bloods are black). I don't take offense to that shit because it has nothing to do with me. I don't look at them and instantly think "Oh they are making fun of black people" because I don't have this mindset that all blacks are gangbangers. Hell I don't even think that is a stereotype.

I'm confused... they actin like there ain't bloods and crips near SC.

I expect a follow-up story to this within the next few months...one of these saltines goin die.

Don't know why I'm even addressing this coon ass nigga in the first place.

I was waiting for it. That's the standard idiot move on this site. If someone doesn't go along with the easy mindset, they must be a coon. You dudes are as predictable as you are stupid.

Near SC? Dawg SC has Crips and Bloods. They had to create a gang task force in the state because of how bad it got a few years ago. People in here wondering why they aren't smart enough to realize this could be offensive to Black people. Is it that hard to believe they are just that dumb? They aren't even smart enough to realize that agitating people who are in the news all the time for killing other people isn't a good idea.

Again with the "defend their actions" shit. Dog, before we take this any further. Please quote the place where I said it was ok to do what they are doing. Post where I said what they are doing isn't offensive. lol And what is black people shit? Nigga, you sound like crackas, as if black people can only dress one way or act one way.
