Nolan with the subliminal shots fired at Abe?
As the Falcons attempt to assemble a defense that can both build a lead and hold it, they’ve swapped out John Abraham for Osi Umenyiora.
So far, so good.
“Osi fit in right away,” defensive tackle Jonathan Babineaux said recently, via the Albany Herald. “He has an outgoing personality. You can talk to him about just about anything. As each day goes by, I think he’s getting more and more comfortable.”
Umenyiora has been lining up on both sides of the line for the Falcons.
“It’s been awesome,” Umenyiora said. “The whole team has welcomed me with open arms. It’s just been a wonderful feeling coming out there with these guys. It’s a great football team.”
Defensive coordinator Mike Nolan hints that Umenyiora gives them something from an intangible standpoint that Abraham didn’t.
“John Abraham was a hell of a player, and Osi has kind of come in to fill that role,” Nolan said. “But every player is different and to say who’s better or not, some of it has to do with how that person fits in with the guys around him. Sometimes it’s a little better chemistry-wise.”
Umenyiora’s formula for now includes humility.
“For me, I have to start all over again and show them exactly what I’m capable of,” Umenyiora said. “Nobody cares what I did for the New York Giants. It’s what can I do for the Atlanta Falcons, and they expect big things from me. I expect even bigger things from myself.”
I fuxx with Abraham tho. But he did kinda come off like a mercenary that didn't really give a fuck about the "team" and just his own stats, etc.
But then again, Osi doesn't really strike me as a leader either.
Osi is a smarter player tho. I've seen Abraham misread run-plays and run himself "out of the play" way too much since he's been here. But lookin at some Giants games via NFL Rewind, I see that Osi plays "smarter".
He sniffs out screens, run plays, stunts alot better than Abe did, etc.
Overall I think the move is a wash. Abe is probably a better pure pass-rusher than Osi, but Osi is more complete player and has that championship experience.
Those Giants D-lines were the secret to their success in those two Patriots super bowls - and Osi was right in the middle of it all.
The x-factor will be Maponga, Goodman, and if our DT rotation.

T.E.'s will be covered by DBs and LB's playing the run, blitzing or spying the read-option.
We can't afford to have a weak D-line rotation tho.

I think Nolan and TD wanna go with more of the young guys on the DL. I'm cool with it on the outside but unless Peters and Jerry step up and Travian Robertson is as good as the coaches say he is were gonna have problems up the middle again

I know what TD is doing.
Unlike most teams, we are one of the few teams right now that knows exactly who our core/nucleus players of the future are. (Ryan, Julio, Spoon, WillyMo, etc.)
And he knows that the more success we have, the more it'll cost us to keep those players. So now we have to focus more on getting the most out of late-round draft picks and even UDFA's for the rest of the team.
That's how you build a dynasty in the salary cap era. Can't keep every player. Just pin-point the 4 or 5 players that define your squad and can't live without for the next 5+ years and then fill in the blanks everywhere else with smart drafts and smart vet free agent contracts.
As I said before, every team will go into September with at least two holes on their roster. That's just the era we're in.

Am I the only one that has a gut feeling that Alford might be as good or better than Tru?
Tru is as textbook as it gets as a prototype DB, but I see a swagger and a "natural" -ness about Alford that you really can't coach.
I think Tru will be the overall better corner, but I wouldn't be surprised if Alford has "prettier" stats.
Tru is not much of a ball-hawk, but Alford is a former receiver.

That makes sense. When you got a new Offensive coordinator, you don't wanna go that fast.
But with the talent we have it makes all the sense in the world to speed it up. Don't give the defense any time to think or make substitutions.
