you must really want people to read that article lol. good read though. to expand on your point about Asap, Nicki Minaj did the same thing when she said she wanted to not be known as just a NY rapper but a national artist. It's like they don't want to even fully rep NY anymore.

lol, nah homie, the IC system is kinda fucked...I try posting, and shit gets repeated 6x over again...you lucky I ain't trolling. I'd be invading this thread like a muthafucka, lol

But yeah, it pains me that boom bap isn't as much of a regional presence. It's fine with me if cats like Minaj and A$ap ain't interested in promoting a regional sound. But it's too bad, because if the game needs anything right now, it's more variety and diversity. That's how we breed creativity for hip hop, by encouraging each region to bring something local and fresh - and not simply trying to emulate whatever's hot. Fuck mass appeal! Just rep your hood and do you!

Fortunately, there are still many emcees who are still on that rugged raw shit, and won't mind spitting on a drumkick, scratching, or sample. I mean, you still hear it in many indie/underground rappers, but not with the ones who are pushing the big units....I dunno about those cats....they always stay on that computerized, sing-song techno shit.

Gotta keep it thoro...east coast gotta keep it thoro!

EDIT: By the way, you ever noticed how Niki and A$ap ain't never be sampling soul, jazz, or funk on their joints...smh whatever happened to keeping black music alive and growing? Let's start diggin' in the crates again!

Producers don't wanna pay royalties for sampling.

I think NY has a negative stigma and those artists can break that stigma but they choose not to.

Yeah, I figured that much had to be true. But I've wondered why other, more indie producers won't mind drawing on a sample here and there. J Dilla (RIP), Premo, Pete Rock, 9th Wonder, and others don't seem to mind looping the vinyl. But I guess there's a lot more at stake when your song gets constant play on the radio...

Yo for reals, I ain't gonna hate on the West. whatchu think this is, 1995?

"You softer than Alize with a chaser" LOL

EDIT: Keep in mind, there's a common artistic ground that all rappers can embrace, regardless where they're from. Pac was a big Wu-Tang fan, and dug at Nas' shit too. And around 94' one of the greats of New York, Masta Ace came out with a West-Coast flavored hit, check it out....

They still do but the loophole is they put them songs on mixtapes to avoid paying those royalties.
