Man, I really love 90s East Coast hip hop....the jazz influences, the snare and bass drum kicking, that boom bap feel, the sampling, and the raw and witty lyrics. Damn, what an era!

Yo, anyone know why hip hop sounded so dark during the mid-90s. Just listened to the Goodfellaz album by Showbiz&AG, and god damn, that was some grimey stuff. Seems like so many East Coast albums during that period kept to that dark, gritty, sparse shit. Why?
