Pete Rock is (rightfully) pissed off about this track. Shame on Lupe. He's got all the talent in the world, but he can't stay out of his damn way. First the Tribe Called Quest debacle & now this.

Whoa, Lupe should have gotten permission from Pete to recycle the Troy beat. This fool took the whole song, not just a sample lol.

I think Lupe needs to explain his reason (not that he owes it to any of yall) for it before anyone goes hard about it. Like Pete Rock just did mad shit for attention, going hard on twitter when that's something he feels so strongly on. Why put all your business out instead of calling him or setting up a meeting a few days later. Shit ain't treal.

what i don't get is why he didn't do the same gesture that he wanted lupe to extend. Hit him up personally. I'm sure he couldve easily gotten his number.

an artist of lupe caliber taking one of the most widely recognized, sentimentally valued, hip-hop tracks ever, and going PUBLIC with it BEFORE getting blessing from Pete is pretty irresponsible. And boy wonder got dope beats for DECADES, why this son didn't just grab something new/original to have all to himself?? no need to piggy back off a classic lol, dang...leave that alone

you do realize that the label might have got clearance from somewhere to even have it up for sale right ???

He should have checked in, it's that simple, this is not the first time he upset a Hip Hop Legend .

We hold Lupe to a higher standard because he presents himself as a man/artist of integrity, he needs to walk that walk.

Does he have to check if he got it cleared by the label ? by the ppl who the sample belongs to ? just asking ? or he just needs to ask Pete because he sampled it first ? what if lupe just cut out the middle man and went to who sample belongs to?

Pete Rock was given permission personally from Tom Scott to sample the song and make TROY. Lupe could've said something if this was a homage.

Technically couldn't Lupe just get permission from TS as well?

sure he could've. but he didn't. so..........

Lupe killed the beat, period. Is it official release anyway? He could sample it in more subtle way, since it sounds like total rip-off, but on the other side TROY is one of the most characteristic hip-hop songs. Pete's reaction is a bit too much.

here is a new interview of lupe talking about petes reaction

wait lupe saying he reached out to pete rock? someone lying then either lupe or pete then.....

Exactly...... but then again it may not necessarily mean someone's lying but rather one or both sides are only telling half-truths.

Cos it sounded like Lupe never spoke to PR directly about it. "We reached out to him..." "my camp to his camp" "I'm a third party..."

that could mean that whoever produced it on behalf of FnF just got the proper permission from whoever owns the rights to it (I'm guessing Warner Bros). Reminds me of Jay-Z sampling Nas and going through to Serchlite publishing.

Also even if they literally did speak to PR and he gave his blessing for them use TROY, maybe they never let him hear the final version of it as well. So he could be mad that they didn't flip it more or took an element of TROY rather than basically use the exact same beat.

This song is pretty high on the charts rite now. Maybe PR is gettin some type of compensation for it. PR said on twitter that he reached out to Lu and everythings cool.

Yeah which is what i thought because you cant just release that shit on i tunes without the clearance from the label the sample come from which means either pete or whoever owns the rights to the beat had to be notified and are making money off it being used.
