I agree that it came at a time where all eyes were on Nas, he won the battle and was on top of the game again, all that other party rapper/conscience rapper bullshit is irrelevant to the hype, it was an epic song dropped with epic timing, not really understanding the hate (although I do agree with the Jesus dying line being overrated, no matter how it's explained it still isn't hittin me)

I can explain the hype about One Mic;

It was in the middle of the Jay vs Nas beef. For some reason Jay was labeled as a club/party rapper that just rapped about ice/hoes/selling drugs/driving expensive cars and balling. On the other end of the spectrum were the conscious/positive rappers like Mos Def/Talib Kweli/Common/Black Thought/Dead Prez etc.

The problem people had was that Jay Z (and Ja Rule/DMX, Etc.) were getting more airplay than the conscious rappers. People felt there was a hidden agenda and that conscious rappers that had something to say were being overshadowed by "jiggy" rappers.

So when Stillmatic came out and Nas dropped Ether he kinda reversed everything for a minute. He won the battle on Hot 97 55%-45%. Then he released One Mic as a single and it had a video. MTV2 used to play that video every other hour.

So for a brief moment it seemed like the conscious rappers got the spotlight and the jiggy/club/gangsta rappers got pushed to the back.

One Mic isn't the type of song that makes a good single, but he was at war with Jay Z and he had to prove that he had something to rap about besides rims on a truck.

But yeah, One Mic is cool but my favorite Nas track is probably If I Rules The World
.

No ngga.

Blueprint had already dropped and any thoughts of Jay bein a flashy jiggy rapper were shattered.

Same time or maybe even before One Mic, Song Cry was all over that same MTV.

Your whole point is mute.

There was no "hype". It was a great song. A unique song. Thus it played a lot. Simple.

I think you meant to say, "your whole point is moot"

And if there was "no hype" then why did this thread get made?

Anyway, Jay Z epitomized the flashy, jiggy, materialistic rapper. One Mic was the complete opposite of what Jay Z represented.

And for the record, there were a lot of Hip Hop fans that weren't feeling Jay Z at the time. In hindsight, Blueprint was a great album but lets not act like EVERYBODY was bumping it. I know I didn't cop it until after Stillmatic dropped and I know I'm not the only one.

Your timelines are incorrect, sir. Also keep in mind we're just talkign about the strength of One Mic, and you;re using all that to say peopel forced One Mic??

You're piecing together points that were independent of each other at the time.

And, sir, if you didnt cop Blueprint until after Stillmatic, your opinion is MOOT lol Sure there's a demographic that does everything so sayin 'i know i want the only one' doesnt mean anything.

But this is during the jay nas beef, JAY Z VS NAS! , after Takeover dropped, and you STILL hadnt listened to Blueprint for 3+ months???

Then son, Why tha FUK would anyone listen to your timeline of events?

What rock were you lvin under? Lls Clearly you were on some "other" shyt and your recollection of events is off-kilter.

Don't know about greatest song of all time, but forever one of my favourite bars.

Funny how this is precisely the reason one of my homies hated the song cause he didn't know wtf nas was talking about

His delivery is impeccable on this record

The halfway points in the verses where he spits more aggressively and the beat becomes darker are dope af

I honestly never got what was so impressive about that line. What is so amazing about comparing the age Jesus died to the amount of shots in a hypothetical shooting. I never got it. Is it using math in a rap bar? I'm hoping someone can explain this in a way that blows me away.

Its just numerology. He's making a play on numbers. Its not necessarily a mind blowing lyric but for some reason people make a big deal about it like it is a mind blowing lyric.

A glock holds sixteen bullets. If you have two glocks then you have the ability to shoot 32 bullets.

But with guns you can put an extra bullet in the chamber. When you put an extra bullet in the chamber you get an extra shot. This means you can't put the gun on safety and if you pull the trigger by accident the gun will discharge.

If you've ever heard the expression "one in the chamber" thats what it means. Another example is a revolver that holds six bullets. You can put an extra bullet in the chamber so the gun can fire 7 shots, but the gun will always be cocked.

So basically Nas is saying that Jesus died at the age of 33. He had two glocks, each glock held 16 bullets. But there were 33 shots, so that means the person holding the gun must have put "one in the chamber".

Its not rocket science. Its just numerology. Kinda like when Rakim said, "I'll take 7 MCs and put em in a line, and add 7 more brothers who think they can rhyme/but it'll take 7 more before I go for mine/now thats 21 MCs ate up at the same time". It doesn't really mean anything but it sounds cool.

I got everything you explained on first listen. The line never blew me away. I guess people get excited when an artist mentions Jesus.
