One God to show me how to do things his son did

Pure, like a cup of virgin blood; mixed with

151, one sip'll make a nigga flip

Writin names on my hollow tips...

Wonder what my secrets is, niggaz'll move on you

only if they know, what your weakness is I have none

Smh Smh Clutch. They put this ngga back to the wall and he shot his way out. This song may actually be UNDERRATED. A great example of its not how you say it, or flow, or all that bullshyt, its saying things no one else would even THINK to. Pen game was ferocious on this

"Jesus died aged 33, that's thirty three shots from twin glocks that's sixteen a piece, that's thirty two, which means, one of my guns was holding seventeen, twenty seven hit your crew, six went in to you..."

Don't know about greatest song of all time, but forever one of my favourite bars.

Never understood why niggas get hype off simple arithmetic in a song.

Nas is indeed legendary. But not for much past 2001. And not for anything after 1996.

Ahh roster player 99

Check this shit out right here. 9+9= 18.

18 +9 = 27. 2+7= 9.

9 ÷ 3 =3

3 x 2 =6

6 + 60= 66

66 is upside down 99.

Y'all catch this deep arithmetic I'm giving you?

Goat me bitches

I get the message: One mic, the power of a voice and the revolution like theme, but that record just never really hit me compared to songs like Testify, Nigger, Mandingo, I gave you power, Project Roach, etc.

I just dont get the hype still after all these years lol.

You saying its not on your Nas greatest hits album?

Its on mine

I feel like its a pressured public vote to say it has to be. Personally, no its not for me. Its a really good song, but not great.

I would really like to hear what makes it so great. Yes im aware and read the lyrics. Yes i know the GOAT Phil Collins is sampled. And Yes i know he is speaking on "my voice is power" type shit but still i dont get what makes it so epic.

IMO

Project Roach>>One Mic.

Its shorter and hits harder. IMO

Wtf are u talkin about? Lol what public pressure? i dont even hear shyt said about One Mic as compared to say NY State of Mind or I Gave you Power, irl or online

One Mic is brilliant, i mean... its HARD to debate opinion but first and foremost how can you even compare Nas 2002 lyrics, during his resurgence when arguably he reached his zenith, vs him a few years ago

Nas 2002 lyrically>>>>Nas 2008. And thats not shyttin on him in 08 but just like sports, nggas got primes and that was his, that was Nas perfected. That whole post Takeover moment

'Nggas throwin dirt on my name'. That shyt gave me chills,bc you could FEEL the back against the wall all or nothin pressure in almost all of them songs. You compare that to project roach? Lol Good song, but bruh...

Swellin my melon cause none of these niggaz real

Heard he was, tellin police, how can a kingpin squeal?

This is crazy, I'm on the right track I'm finally found

You need some soul searchin, the time is now

They way he switched it up n started high then slowed it all the way down for that last verse, he said that shyt damn near at a whisper. Goodness. No. Just, no. What are we even talkin about right now?? Lls /rant

what kingpin ratting helped him find himself?

What did his soul searching teach him? What did he learn? Would have been good if he explained it.

So what I'm getting is this song is so great because he vaguely says random shit about being an underdog, throws in some math, and whispers

Smartenup nas

I remember i was at a college cookout with a dj. Everybody gettin it in. For some reason the dj played One Mic

Bruh he sobered everybody up lol It was so surreal Nggas had that look like

*katt williams voice*

'You know maybe all i do need is one mic, i dont even know why i need to be here with all this bullshyt'

No disrespect to your crew. But y'all are lames.

Dope song, but never really heard people overhyping it....Even in this thread you have a handful of people saying its so epic and majority saying its dope to wack.....

I can explain the hype about One Mic;

It was in the middle of the Jay vs Nas beef. For some reason Jay was labeled as a club/party rapper that just rapped about ice/hoes/selling drugs/driving expensive cars and balling. On the other end of the spectrum were the conscious/positive rappers like Mos Def/Talib Kweli/Common/Black Thought/Dead Prez etc.

The problem people had was that Jay Z (and Ja Rule/DMX, Etc.) were getting more airplay than the conscious rappers. People felt there was a hidden agenda and that conscious rappers that had something to say were being overshadowed by "jiggy" rappers.

So when Stillmatic came out and Nas dropped Ether he kinda reversed everything for a minute. He won the battle on Hot 97 55%-45%. Then he released One Mic as a single and it had a video. MTV2 used to play that video every other hour.

So for a brief moment it seemed like the conscious rappers got the spotlight and the jiggy/club/gangsta rappers got pushed to the back.

One Mic isn't the type of song that makes a good single, but he was at war with Jay Z and he had to prove that he had something to rap about besides rims on a truck.

But yeah, One Mic is cool but my favorite Nas track is probably If I Rules The World.

.

No ngga.

Blueprint had already dropped and any thoughts of Jay bein a flashy jiggy rapper were shattered.

At the same time or maybe even before One Mic, Song Cry was all over that same MTV.

Your whole point is mute. moot.

There was no "hype". It was a great song. A unique song. Thus it played a lot. Simple.

I think you meant to say, "your whole point is moot"

And if there was "no hype" then why did this thread get made?

Anyway, Jay Z epitomized the flashy, jiggy, materialistic rapper. One Mic was the complete opposite of what Jay Z represented.

And for the record, there were a lot of Hip Hop fans that weren't feeling Jay Z at the time. In hindsight, Blueprint was a great album but lets not act like EVERYBODY was bumping it. I know I didn't cop it until after Stillmatic dropped and I know I'm not the only one.
