one thing i like about this album is it doesnt fit the mold of most albums that have come out over the past few years.

Take Choppers for instance, song is 9 min long. Who else is doing that these days. I hate when you vibing to a record then its over after 3 min.

Last cat that i remember (granted i dont listen to a ton of rap these days) that made a song this long or longer was Joe budden when he made Who (killed hip hop) and that joint was 15 min of crack

IMO people are reading into it to much...it's just a collection of songs with four pieces of music that Lupe associates with the four seasons.

there's clearly themes to the content ... and this is the same nigga that made an album which personified the environment of the "Streets" and characteristics of the "Game" into supernatural comic figures ... so while some of the theories people are bringing forward may be a bit "ambitious" to say the least ... i dont think anything should be considered far fetched especially when dealing with an artist that is as prone to use abstract metaphors such as Lupe

I agree, but he trolls occasionally, maybe the interntion is to convey diffrent opinons based on his "art" (the artwork itself is implying what the album is). I think a year from now i will look at it diffrently, and many perspectives will be given as well. Overall i think the overall theme from this album is abstract, what we should focus on first if their was some kind of "theme" is breaking down each song bar from bar. Then put everything together. Honestly i think Lupe just wanted to be a rapping ass nigga and deliver messages but in a coded a way for each song, i dont think he is super clever enough to put together a super profound masterpiece of a story together that will take forever to decipher. Im really starting to think we are all siking ourselves out, but hey maybe im wrong and dude is a complete genius. Its just based on the story he told about the process of making the album, the whole deeper meaning thing seems far fetched.

i dont know what you mean by "deeper meaning" tho ... i mean there's certainly metaphors here ..so i dont think you can doubt that if thats what you mean by deeper meanings.. i mean he said as much in regards to the prisoner 1 and 2 track being a representation of his label situation as well as a representation in the literal sense of his mans being put in jail ...or if you look at deliver being conceptual piece about the literal lack of "peace" in urban environments and its effects on a community..lol so i dont think you have to sike yourself out necessarily for anything as the depth is certainly there ..now to what degree your going to extrapolate his words out to could definitely vary depending upon your enthusiasm for him as an artist...lol

but i agree with you in the sense that this album is a representation of Lupe wanting to let people decide what some of these concepts ultimately mean .. to them...on a grand scale that is... i think thats why he hasn't came out and gave a plain and simple narration to whats happening with every song... but i think art kind of loses its mystic when artist have to do that .. kind of like why Christopher Nolan didn't show if the spinning top fell or not at the end of Inception... i think as an artist you want people to engage with your art and really think critically about it and find layers of meanings especially in this particular art form that is creative writing

but with all that said ..if you want to just enjoy this record on the superficial level ..you certainly can .. i mean the lyricism in the wordplay ..the conscientious content .. the elaborate production don't need too much heavy analyzing to enjoying strictly on a face value level .. and thats the beauty of it .. if you want the dense shit its there ..but if you don't there's still a sonically pleasing album here for you

I feel Life is Good not performing commercially wasn't as bad because it was critically acclaimed. These lack luster reviews are just perplexing

Lupe Fiasco to me is a brilliant artist that I don't like as a person. I disagree with a lot of his personal opinions and perspectives from interviews and his music can get very preachy and even reactionary at times. I qualify this so I don't come off as a Stan when I say there are parallels between how he is treated for this project and Jesus in the Bible. He is being persecuted in the box office by the people he is trying to reach, and by publications reviewing him unfavorably. Yes 7.2 or XL is unfavorable. But those who take the time to listen and understand his art are enthralled by it and support it whole heartedly.

On Madonna when he says

"Lawyer say I'll be be alright

But I think that he's lying to me"

Is that Judas?

I literally thought nothing of this line I just took it for face value. But now that you mention it I can totally see it being a judas reference. The song itself is like a parallel btw the troubles of a black male youth & jesus "white T(ee) on his shoulders, what drags him off through those streets" that line always stands out to me like the whole scene of jesus dragging the cross and cops dragging a black kid by his white tee. Man this track is flames I cant wait to see him perform this

Yeah im going through this thread and some folks are really looking way too deep into things. This is what people were talking about in the other thread when it got said sometimes Lupe fans go too far trying to make the music deeper than it is trying to prove who is smarter than the other. Its a ggreat album but all this "listen backwards while facing east between 8 pm and 8:45 and the first half of the album makes sense. I can tell because he held the CD cover like this" is too much.
