when lupe didn't know shit about ATCQ even though he was performing a verse of theirs on hip hop honors, did y'all go as hard on him as you did on RHQ and now lil yachty?

im not caping, just asking an honest question...

i really don't care what a 17 year old thinks about music 20 years ago

i know when dre made the chronic and snoop's first album, all the old heads were telling me that was nothing but "talking over parliament funkadelic beats" and they'd go on and on about p-funk and all that and in my head all i heard was "blah blah blah"

i imagine this is the same thing

tupac and biggie was OUR generation, these kids have their own generation, let them rock

I wasn't on this forum at that time but I do remember lupe getting destroyed for that

Well it is what it is... This brings up a point that I've been wanting to talk about. We always talk about Rakim,Kane, and others from the 80's... Jay, NAS, and others from the 90's.. But we don't really know who the greats are from 1998(the year Yachty was born) til like now. People say Eminem is one of the greats but the other slots seem to be always open. People laugh when you say Wayne's a legend, you say Jeezy and you might get the side eye. I know Yachty probably grew up on Soulja Boy or some shit, but we got to know who the greats are from that time period. I mean niggas are saying Drake and Kendrick and shit but it feels like we skipped over quite a few rappers.

The difference is those newer rappers you mentioned had talent and produced quality, well regarded music. These new niggas idolise garbage rappers, which in-turn breeds a new generation of garbage rappers. You may say, "garbage to me, music is subjective" but that's not entirely true. By any standard, Nas is a better rapper than Soula Boy.

theres really no excuse. esp since he's coming from a generation where they grew up with more access to damn near all information in the world. youve never heard a biggie song? go to Youtube. takes 3 minutes to listen. he's just a bum

Here is the difference between rap and other genres. Rappers from the 80's and even some from the 90's don't tour like that anymore in big venues. All the 80s niggas maybe come together and do an all star tour where they each do literally 5 songs. When did big daddy kane last do a coast to coast tour? What about slick rick? No them niggas may be performing 3 hits at a nba halftime show but that's it. Maybe a small theater tour but that's it.

But shit if i want to see AC/DC them niggas got a tour going on right now. I fucking saw stevie wonder still playing dope as fuck last october and hes from the 60's. You can catch old ass country singers still touring old as fuck. Parents can't take their kid to an 80s rappers headlining tour like other genres.

You know why all these young rock musicians know the grateful dead and dylan and zeppelin? Because 30 plus years after they first came out some young rock artists father took them to see that act in a big arena and that's how they learned to respeskt the rock legends. You can't take your son to an LL cool J show at Madison Square Garden. So how can a yougn' like lil yacty understand how big LL was in the 80s and 90's?

There's a lil more to it than that.

Back in the 80s the rap industry was just being formed so a lot of the old school rappers got ripped off because there were no rules. They signed over their publishing rights and mechanical royalties, as a result they don't make any money from their "hits".

By the time the 90s rolled around rappers were a lil more savvy. Rappers from the 90s managed to hold on to their publishing and mechanical royalties so they make money when they tour ala Duck Down.

But that is just like the 50's and early early 60's in rock. The business was being formed and black blues acts got ripped off and there were no rules. And what came of that is most acts pre stones and beatles don't get much love in the rock world even with tributes and fandom.

All i am saying is sure for someone not to know big and pac is foolish. However someone not knowing 80's rap even as a loyal hip hop fan isn't something that makes you any less of a fan. Earlier in the thread people also stated that you should know the 80s more and i was just responding honestly to that as cat born in 1990.

The difference tho is, P Funk and Dre/Snoop were different genres. It's not like them dudes were R&B singers or keyboardists and disregarded their legacy. If anything, they reintroduced those dudes to a new generation. Matter of fact, they even went as far as working with those artists in the future. I honestly wouldn't know who Roger Troutman was if it wasn't for Dre and Pac. These new dudes are just ignorant to their past and completely unwilling to learn.

Contrary to the commercial takeover opinion of rap, Biggie and Pac are NOT pioneers of Hip-Hop. Rap did not start with them.

How many of you guys can name 5 KRS songs? Or 5 Rakim songs? Kane? Those are the real classic acts.

A better question is who can name 5 songs by The Sugarhill Gang, Grandmaster Flash, Spoonie G and Kurtis Blow?

Too easy but you can't ask this type of question on the internet obviously.

Biggie and 2pac overall are considered better artists then the ones you named by most, so it's not the same. I get your point but Biggie and 2pac had much better songs then Rakim and Kane, let's be real. I say this as someone who has Rakim and BDK albums, so to me Yachty is more out of line.

Lupe is a different case though......he came up not listening to rap of any kind...his first exposure was It Was Written by Nas which is why Nas is his favorite emcee

I'm 34 and I can't name 5 track titles from any artist. But I could recite the lyrics of whole fucking albums of the greats.

I be like "that one that goes..."

To us it's the same genre, but to these kids it isn't. What yatchy is doing has nothing to do with rakim. These 16 year old kids don't care about music from twenty years ago the same way most 16 year olds haven't from dawn of music. Most ppl ain't vibing with shit their parents did, that's just how it is.

This ain't no different than when heavy metal ppl were saying Fuck rolling stones. It is the same thing.

The same way black Panthers were saying Fuck mlk.

The thing i don't understand is rock n roll, Heavy metal, punk rock, and hip hop... All initially came out being like Fuck the past, this is our shit. That's the foundation for any rebellious music...

But now that the youth are doing it to hiphop and heavy metal the oldies wanna say this is not fair. The same way guns n roses was mad because nirvana(kurt cobain) kept dissing them every chance he got...

This is what young kids do and they always have done this. There was once a writer/philosopher who kept complaining about the talents of the young kids of his time and how the kids had no respect, and didn't pay homage to the elders who paved the way... You know who that writer was? Socrates back in b.c days and shit...

Ain't nothing changed my nigga.

Hip hop ain't special and immune to shIt

Overall young kids don't care about old stuff and why would they?
