For what it's worth, I think the OP is understandably frustrated and has pinpointed an inaccurate reason as to why he's not picking up as much as he'd like to be. So long as your face doesn't look like a dropped pie, guys should be able to hook up with girls so long as you know how to talk to them with confidence. Confidence to a woman is like an hour glass figure to a man. They are inherently attracted to it.
As someone that is neither black nor white, but of much lighter complexion that African Americans nonetheless, I've had African Australians (I was born and raised here) attracted to me, even though they seem to prefer darker skinned guys for the most part. Then again, we don't have a lot of African Australians down under so it's not much of a sample size to make judgments with. Most people here with African backgrounds seem to be people that have just immigrated from Sudan within the last couple of years and they tend to stick with their own group of people.
Point being - if you have good confident social skills, you should be able to attract people of all kinds, including those that arent stereotypically drawn to yourself (but in the OP's case, it seems like African American girls like darker guys anyway so maybe you just need to brush up on exuding your confidence).
