If you listen to "For Free?" & "For Sale?" you pretty much get what the internal struggle of the album is all about ... basically as a artist as a man in this country you work hard to cultivate and craft your art .. your skill ... whatever that may be .. so you take pride in it .. and obviously place value on it ..and since you don't wont to feel exploited .. you will go out of your way to make sure your not used "for free" in a literal sense ..

HOWEVER ... this society has its way of getting you by hook or by crook .. so when you go into "For Sale" its another internal struggle that an artist ..a man .. has to deal with ... you have to ask yourself .. well if your not for free .. then you must be "for sell" ... correct?? it has to be one way or another ... but the question is ...is there really a difference?? is the choice ultimately not just a double edge sword?? sure you get the money the fame the popularity .. all of these trinkets that the character "Lucy/Lucifer" has to offer ... but now your someones property .. your under someones control because your indebted to their cash flow for support ... you owe them your time your energy your life in a way ... and while most people will sign up for that all day .. there's real cost that come with that .. the detachment from the place & people that made you ...you... not being their for your sister who gets pregnant as a teenager when your preaching to crowds about self awareness ..having friends get killed and you cant even visit them in the hospital because of "obligations"

This album is essentially Kendrick explaining the complexities of what happens when you pluck a young black man out of an ostracized cast way land ..give him fame gratification and riches and tell him to adjust to this new world on the fly .. he is trying to deal with balance of "normalcy" especially coming from such humble beginnings ... cleverly he correlates his tale with that of another "rose from concrete" so to speak in Pac.. pretty much Pac is his guidance ..and he's telling the story of the album to him in bits and pieces stopping where every he see's a simularity with a situation Pac also went thru.. leading up to the end where he finally gets to talk to his guru ..but obviously a person can only lead/teach you so far before its time to tackle life on your own ..and that's where the album ends

My nigga "props" for breaking that shit down like that.

Fashiggadale .... i'd love to hear some other opinions on what people are getting from the album on a thematic level ... what do people believe the record is about?

thats what this place is supposed to be about ... probably gotta let it sink in a couple more days to get some real discussions

Its a rehash of the same ol, internal struggle, saint vs sinner schtick. the bitches are simultaneously the evils that tempt him and the object of his desire. he vacilates between a personal narrative and an overall critique on the collective black psyche. i "get it" i just dont dig the execution. just not as "deep" as it tries to be passed off as. and again...the whole "lucy/lucifer" metaphor is sooooo half-cocked as he is promoting the luciferean mindstate subtly but its hard to catch because hes throwing race out there...because race is a "hot" topic now so he basically HAD to go there. to pimp a butterfly you gotta catch it in the cocoon..while its sleep ...during the tender stages of its development. its some elementary shit yo... its made to seem deeper than it is

BooBoo.

nigga go gargle dry kitty litter

It's crazy to see ppl not liking the production. Pure musicianship going on here. Dudes in the studio with saxophones, trumpets, bass guitars, pianos, guitars, real drums, & Rhodes. I feel like my Jazz loving Dad would appreciate this body of work. Guess it's a style thing.

Thats the thing... I like jazz. I go deep in the crates on that shit. When I said the production sounds like Dangermouse doing a bad Robert Glasper impression I was being deadly accurate. I can appreciate his ATTEMPT but ....the shit sounds discordant to a musical ear...especially how they decided to do the vocals. If you fucking with jazz YOU GOTTA KNOW WHEN TO ROCK THE BREAKS. Sonically the nigga was doing too much and not enough at the same time

you know Robert Glasper worked on half the tracks right?

I thought I heard his influence in there. Lacks his usual sense of "groove" or maybe its the vocals throwing it all off and giving a discordant sound to me, Kenny needs a few more years before he can mesh with that type shit. Glasper already teeters on the "doing too much" ledge but brings it all together with his sense of rhythm and whne with vocals , vocalist who know how to rock to his shit. It just didnt mesh for me.

Nigga Kendrick Lamar is a mainstream artist..how deep do you want this album to possibly be?

You want esoteric deepness go listen to killah priest or k rino..

Appreciate this project for what it is...

Sooooo its not packaged and presented as some esoteric deep shit? Lucifer is a main antagonist in a thematic album but its not supposed to be rated honestly in that realm? FOH... excuses excuse. Its deep but dont expect it to be too deep. It sounds good to smart people that listen to it repeatedly but dumb people wont like it when they first listen because we shouldnt expect music to sound good the first time we hear it. I like it cause its different. Even though I dont know jack shit about jazz, its sounds so jazzy. GTFOHWTBS..EXCUSES EXCUSES LOL

Bruh you really think the zionists/beast(interscope) is going to allow Kendrick to make music about esoteric subjects like chakras, quantum physics, and tetrahedrons?

Fancy vocab dont make you bright my nigga

Man he aint HAVE to go nowhere on the race shit, most of these other MCs aint. I think he should at least get a little credit for sticking his nose out there subject matter wise.

FALSE. When you say MOST other emcees I think you mean mainstream. Being that I listen to niggas that been consistently treating these topics it pales by comparison. Just "Clap" by Pharaoah or hell... "Im Black" by Styles P are better as singles alone then that whole album overall in giving one a "feel" of the black experience. Like I said I "get it" but its not novel and its not top tier in that realm at all. And i repeat... you NEVER go full 3stacks and thats just what he did on this jawn. Its just more glaring because he stopped hugging waynes nuts so tight on this one

Yeah I was talking about mainstream that's much more risk. And what exactly you mean by going full 3stacks? lol

I mean its been no secret from the jump that the bulk of his emcee DNA comes from Wayne and 3Stacks. Its just on this one we went ALL THE WAY 3stacks and muted the Wayne whilst reaching for a musical backdrop he cant quite keep up with. But listen to the song structures, the vocal stacks especially in terms of sing/speaking.

Who said thats what I was looking for? And moreover niggas been talking about that abstract shit on major labels for fucking decades. Do you not listen to Ab-Soul, nigga? If anything... I prefer the "real" shit in terms of thought provoking subject matter to be NOT housed in all those polysyllabic terms. Jumping on a fucking bandwagon dont make your musical tastes better than the next man. And thank you for the backhanded compliment on my vocabulary nigga

Alright. after 1st listen w/ out reading or hearing about any other reviews:

-Album definitley has a singular direction both lyrically and sonically. Says a lot these days with nggas usin 10 different producers and out of place songs.

-First half of the album is choppy b/c of the skits, interludes and beat switching. I hate beat switching.

-Album gels more in the second half. Alot of songs i'll have to sit down and replay what he sayin.

-He's motivated.

-Im wonderin what the album would sound liek if it was just more music,. There's a lot fo spoken word and startin n stoppin.

-Lot of catchy shyt an dpotential singles or shty everybody starts sayin (i.e. ya bish)....Ya doo doo...this, dick, aint, freeeee nh....

-Cant really give a ratign, but its definitley a good offering. It always takes tim for the deep songs to hit you (i.e. Sing about me.) I cant say its better than GKMC, but the scary thing is i cant necessarily say it aint YET. Hmmmm More listens needed.

Now i can finally see what the world thinks about it

An example of the beat switchign fukin shyt up...The 2nd half of 'U' wher ehe rappin like he cryin, man that jumped out at me on some 'instant classic song' type shyt, like his own version of 'One Mic'...but its on a beat switch. That should be the whole song.

OD was sparse jazz with funk influence and the same Roots/D'Angelo input....so its this

Had more of a groove to it and not as heavy handed subject matter wise. Had just the right amount of "edge" to make it good. It flowed better and seemed more congruent lyrically. And you mean Souquarian influence ( which is not accurate but Im not going to argue that in detail)

I bumped this album again last night while I was kushed out(best time to listen to music imo).

U(the 1st part not that cryin bullshit when the beat switch),For sale interlude, complexion and how much a dollar cost are the songs I like, the rest of the album weak to me.Complexion real dope and I'm glad rapsody got to shine hope she gains new fans from that feature
