Kendrick Lamar: "MOLLY RAP is watering down Hip Hop.."

From what I've observed, around about 2007 you had more rappers making it a point to add the popular keywords to their song, almost akin to a subliminal marketing technique. There was a period when every song, EVERY SONG, mentioned swag/schwag. Almost every "single" that dropped was swag this swag that. It's like that was the word the sheep wanted to hear at the time and the microwave rappers ran it into the ground. Now, as the Hot97 crew pointed out (i didn't watch the vid so I don't know the full extent of their parody), "ratchet, turnup, and molly" are those keywords.

Many of these rappers are not rapping to express themselves, they're trying to cash in by riding waves. The "wave" is so basic and idiotic (throw in the keywords, use the go-to flow of the moment ie Meek Mill Flow) b/c of fans who accept cookie cutter bullshit.

I think the most interesting thing about all this is whether rappers actually chill with all the Molly references now that Kendrick's called them out.

K-Dot's already got the commercial and critical success. If he's capable of killing popular trends too, then it's hard not to call him this generation's hip hop king.

yep. I got a feeling that this is the end of the dominance of swag/ratchet club tracks since all them rappers are flopping like crazy. Sounds more like a conspiracy to me since they pushing shit that ain't making a big profit.

It's more than just the molly references that have watered down hip hop. It's the copy cat mentality. People who are in the hip hop industry today forgot that it's first and foremost about self expression. Too many clones. No real pioneers. It's like a long ass transition period that has yet to lead anywhere when it comes to mainstream rap music.

I feel you but check my first post in this thread. Rappers have always followed trends. Difference is nowadays the bar is set alot lower and alot of mainstream rappers seem to have less skills and less substance so them jumping on trends stand out more.

Yes there were always wanna be's around but peep this

in the 80's Kool Moe Dee, KRS-One, Rakim, Public Enemy, Kool G Rap, Kane, Slick Rick were all pioneers cause they came through with their own style; and that's just the East. Let's not forget cats like the Geto Boys down south and Too Short, DJ Quik and Ice-T out West.

in the 90's the same applies to Nas, Outkast, Pharcyde, 3 6 Mafia, Wu-Tang, Bone Thugs, Busta Rhymes, AZ, MOP and countless others. All with their own styles and most getting some type of mainstream radio play if not just locally then definitely nationally.

Even in the 00's we had Eminem, TI, Kanye West, Ludacris, Lupe, Ja Rule, 50 Cent, The Game, Clipse and even Nelly & Ross' phony ass carving their own niche and getting mainstream radio love.

The only cats in the 2010's I see doing their own thing while getting mainstream radio & club love for better or worse are Kendrick, Wiz, Meek Mill, Tyler (to a lesser extent but still) and Drake & with the exception of Kendrick they aren't even that good.

J Cole is just trying to be Kanye West 2.0 and all them other niggas are just trying to jock Aubrey. Bottom line is the scales are definitely tipped more in the favor of copy cats now more than ever. Not too many dudes with their own style on mainstream radio anymore. At least compared with other eras.

This Molly shit is lame. Just smoke weed niggas...leave that pill poppin' shit to white folks.

Don't knock it til you try it...It's not dangerous...In responsible doses...

I'm not knockin' it fam, but this pill popping shit is crazy. Back in the early 2K's niggas in Philly was in love with xanax. I'm just not on the wave of taking pills, I'm not tryna be hallucinating, nodding off, or none of that shit. Chronic puts me in the perfect zone and I feel like that's enough for me.

It's not a pill...There's no hallucination or nodding off...

Whats next, niggas gonna start going anti weed in rap and stop reppin their hood because too many other niggas say those words and its "watering down the culture"?

For a person who spits smart shit he's pretty stupid.

Hip hop has always gone hand in hand with the drug culture and nowadays niggas on molly so thats what they gonna talk about whether they can rap or not, I dont really see why somebody would bother to lie about taking that or "having that lifestyle" like he's implying. There is just a genuine boom in that drug right now, like it or not.

Molly not even that bad compared to other shit niggas been and still talking about for stupid long... Thats a bitch move really, too not go at cocaine, violence, or hell even swag or the word trap or something thats actually worthwhile

I think this guy needs to learn how to pick better battles, cause this isnt even one

This nigga sounding like Fox News out here, with the exclusive story:

MOLLY POPPING EPIDEMIC CAUSING MASS SWEATINGS ACCROSS AMERICA

Nice try Kendrick, but not really

NO IT HASNT YOU MUST OF JUST STARTED LISTENING TO RAP !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

sn even if it did just cause it started like that doesnt mean we need to continue to carry the torch ... hip hop represent our neighborhoods in a way where its LIKE F THAT JUST CAUSE ITS HOW IT ALWAYS IS .... ITS TIME FOR US TO SAY FUCK HOW WE DID IT YESTERDAY THIS IS THE WAY WE GONNA DO IT TODAY ..... and finally put a screeching HALT to the cycle we are in .....
