u have ur whole life to make that debut...from the day people are introduced to u/you're signed/etc., I say u should have an album out 2 years tops...we know J Cole can make classic material...look at his mixtapes...they are just scared he's going to flop

if u listen to the interview it seems like Cole handed in an album first time and they didnt like it and the sent him back to try again basically

Sounds like excuse #94288429684741951341 for Cole not dropping. Dropping 3 independent mixtapes in 3 years isn't going thru anything? He was ready last year, Jay just don't have faith in him. Yeah, you shouldn't rush things, but taking too long can be deadly too. It leads to forced singles (Cole, Dre), losing buzz (Jay Elec, C.Hamilton), or just plain falling off (Big Sean, Lupe). Nas made a classic in 3 years. Jay's idol Big damn near came off the streets and made a classic in less time. Cole ain't no overnight celebrity, he's been making music since he was 16. If he's not ready, that's fine, but don't beat us in the head like we don't know the business. And who the fuck is Bridget Kelly? (bumps 2nd verse off The Joy)

Most people come off the street and make a classic(hence classic debut albums.. not so much anymore but Jay came from the street and made a classic, same with Nas, Kanye too).

With artists putting out mixtapes before albums, it allows you to grow as an artist by the time you get to the album and make a classic. I dont know if Cole has a classic in him(he's nice as fuck, but I dont know about a classic album.. Jay Elec might depending), but still man.. Jay cant box in an artist. Some of them might come in and turn the game around and drop consistent classics. You never know

Artist development is a key component that's missing in the game, so I agree with Jay on that side....

And if I'm not mistaken, Ne-yo, Rihanna, Rick Ross, & Jeezy all signed to Def Jam under Jay (correct me if I'm wrong)... And they're all still relevant years later..

So maybe he knows what he's talking about...

Guess we'll just have to wait & see

Jeezy had a strong following via at least 2 mixtapes before he dropped...

Wasn't like his first time going into the studio he came out with a banger...

Isn't directly off the streets is when most artists drop their classics which are typically their debut albums? Also...the only thing that letting an artist sit there is going to do these days is allow people to get tired or bored with waiting for the artist and move on or change their minds.

Maybe there is truth to what he says if you find a mature and unique artist but J.Cole isn't a mature artist he's a pretty uninspiring rapper.

That doesn't mean that the timing is right, TIMING IS EVERYTHING IN HIPHOP.

Blu, Fashawn, Kendrick Lamar are artists recently who all dropped high quality albums on their first try,and by high quality i mean near flawless.

But i like what his saying about building artists and not being into singles all that much, at the same time J Coles last singles doesn't really match up with what he is saying.

I think he means commercially relevant artist, not underground niggas. Hence the Lauryn Hill comment!

He was 26 years old, and had been writing that album for years and got rejected alot. He even had to change up his rhyme style till he found what worked, which is the point of this convo (coming into your own as a artist).

50 had been in the game for almost 5 years before his major label debut came out

Wow.. Like this thread.. Didn't come back to see so many post..

I agree/disagree .. I do believe artist development is something that is missing but SOOO needed in the business... HOWEVER due to mixtapes/the net etc.. We are exposed to these artist WAY too early and with that comes the "drop an album or be forgotten" aspect. I hope JCole doesn't become a victim of that.
