Theres alot of hatin goin on in this thread, truth is like it or not this guy has a influence on the young black youth, this cats music put me thru the hardest times of my life, he made goin to college n gettin good grades cool, more young cats need to listen to this dude cuz he spreads a positive message, lol @ ppl sayin he dont deserve the "stanning" theres a reason why he gettin all this attetion n no its not becuz hes signed to jay-z its becuz......................his music speaks for itsself n if u deny that u jus a hater simple as that, give credit where its due. i dont like certain rappers but i never hate on em i jus give credit where its due

J. Cole is just a rapper. Rappers aren't important to the black communities. Nobody is going to do anything positive cuz a rapper does it or says to do it. Most black ppl w/ common sense already do positive shit w/o the influence of a rapper b/cuz they have common sense. Smh @ the historical revisionism. The people who wanted gangsta rap were black. White people in the music industry were reluctant, but they eventually gave in. There was actually a time when the hip hop world was upset that someone like Will Smith was winning grammys. They wanted "realer" rappers to win. Stop trying to rewrite history. (Needless to say, of course, that the black people who wanted gangsta rap only wanted it because of the accumulated effects of white oppression.)

Besides, I'm pretty sure she's talking about influencing those that might not necessarily be on the right path.

But dude actually said in his interviews that he was able to buy time without having to work a 9-5 because of college. I guarantee there's someone who tried to rap that's kicking themselves for not using that as a plan. Someone is going to try to travel that same road. Whether or not it works, they still come out with a degree or at least some "higher education." And, like other artists with lyrical dexterity, the fact he spits lyrics that require at least some thought (maybe not for us, but for young'ns) will make someone smarter as they're trying to comprehend and process everything he's saying.

I had at least 4 kids hit me with the "Gary Coleman just died. Life is short" line 'cause they saw him spit it at the BET hip-hop awards.

i understand opinions, but it's like ya'll are really trying to avoid the possibility that a rapper could influence someone to do something decent.
