3. Rare people who understand how the system works and use it to benefit them. They will go to college just to have a degree and use it as a stepping stone and a back up and not the end.

Ima try to teach my people to have the #3 state of mind.

College isn't a guaranteed path to success sure it helps but it's just as important individuals diversify themselves.

I believe more people especially young Blacks should explore skills trades such being a electrician, plumber, welder, carpentry, and other skill type trade.

The trades are generally considerably cheaper to get, one doesn't have to go to school as long, and individuals also do accumulate the amount of debt either.

More individuals should look at entrepreneurship as well, because there is more money to be made when you work for yourself but it also requires more discipline.

Do you know how fukin stupid that sounds. Do you understand what that says of what you think about our race

Ngga thats what they tell ex-cons!! Tha fuk...

If don't have a degree you better learn a trade. If not, I can almost guarantee you will be working at Walmart or a warehouse.

most of my my opinion on this subject has already been said in here...but in short, yes i do think its wrong to tell them that school will guarantee their success....although its a tool that will help them in succeeding, there are many other things they need to learn that they will not receive from any school....

funny this came up bcuz im reading Rich Dad/Poor Dad right now (late, i know, but u gotta start somewhere)

i want to make sure my kids know about money....not just how to work for it...i want to teach them how to make money work for them....this is something i never learned but im in the process of teaching myself now

What is wrong with what he said? Everyone cant be millionaires or college grads even. Someone has to change that tire, Flip that burger, fix my AC unit, cut the grass.

If a Black person is content with their lives making $18.00 an hour, living a modest lifestyle and plans for a comfortable future. Let it happen.

How is it low expectations to not only think about the high achievers but also the low achievers that just want to have a modest lifestyle.

Y'all making this question way too complicated. I'm just not comfortable lying to my child about higher education. I just can't do it.

I think there's a geographical disconnect. Crude, You, and I are from Louisiana. The place where a person with a skilled trade can out earn a person with a degree by the hour, day, month, or year. We've seen this happen and have probably lived it. Where I'm from, the 2 year process tech degree is crushing it right now. Welders, construction, and electricians are right next to them. Clearing $80k and up. I made so much money after Rita it was unbelievable and I was just an instrument tech (associates degree). That gas ya'll burn in your car has to come from some where, truck drivers maybe or just plain magic. It really comes down to how you want to navigate your own life. A degree is great and all but there are other options, people need to know this.

I am reading Micheal Lewis, The Big Short and that shit really opened my eyes. Next is Flash boys.

Seems to me a lot of yall are advocating for a life that mirrors what YOU want: anti-authority, anti-social, 'i dont wanna dress up', 'i wanna be my own boss', etc...thats what YOU want.

I would think you want to give your kid the path to least resistance career-wise. And there is no debate, that path is w/ a degree. Someone w/ a degree career-wise can do anything one w/out can, but one w/out has COUNTLESS doors closed to them w/ out a degree. I mean what are we even talkin here lol smh

The 'entreprenuers' and *cough* pimps and world travelers and 'what does he even do' people of the world are great and God bless them but they are the exception.

college is not the path of least resistance....that shit is hard for someone who doesnt like school.

Ok, i must have read the thread wrong b/c there's just no way...we talkin bout kids, right??

If you're kid doesnt take to school and learning you've fukin failed. Lol Yea, not 100% failed, but, its pretty damn high on the 'succesful parent checklist'. No kid naturally likes school but i mean is that not wtf you there for?!?! Wtf?! Lol What type of alternative parenting are we talkin about here?' 'Put them books down son lemme teach you bout this 3/4 drill bit'.

I stand by what i said, yall some low expectation havin, 'i dont want my kid to be better than me' ass mfers. Pologies if u offended but...*shrug*

Successful, wealthy, and thriving generations/famlies/cultures are NOT built on this bullshyt yall talkin.

Yes it's wrong to teach kids this. A college degree doesn't equal success.

I tell my nieces and nephews that college isn't for everyone and if you can find a way to be successful without it pursue it with all your heart. College doesn't guarantee you anything, it does make it easier most of the time, and you can potentially demand more from employers just because you have a piece of paper. In the end you have to follow your own path and do what is right for yourself

@S2J If my son shows that he is happy with living a simple modest life. Yes. The decision to be a productive human being will make me happy. I will show him how to manage his money and make it grow for retirement. Ultimately he will have to choose his path. Just because I lead him to water doesnt mean he will drink from that well.

Yes I will save for him to go to college. but if he says I want to work at a Burger King. I will advise him to work hard and strive for management. If he wants to be a rapper. I will tell him to work hard and strive to own and produce his own music.
