Is HIP HOP at an all time low?

No. Because 2006 & 2004 already happened

To say its an all time low would mean theres been no lower point than now which just isnt true

All in all 2013 has been one of the better years in Hip Hop this millenium. Depending on how the 4th qtr releases go 2013 & 2007 can go down as the best years post 2003

You guys are ungrateful and spoiled , 2010 - 2013 has been the best period in rap for such a long ass time...

The fuck?

Hip-Hop JUST started to get back relevancy this year. You had some people drop some gems in the last three years (MBDTF, LIG, GKMC), but overall, the genre is still in recovery.

Y'all know what the problem is?? People are too busy complaining about the shit they don't like. These IC threads are full of complaining about music they hate instead of giving spotlight to sum shit thats actually good. If I try out something and i don't like it i erase it and keep it moving. Niggas need to write a "Song Cry" about an album that they dont like.

I honestly don't get how ppl complain about Music in 2013......

NaS trolled the hell out of the rap game with that album title a few years back, got niggas in their feelings ..

Whatever happened to listening/purchasing/supporting HipHop music you as an individual like?

Hell what happened to liking a few rappers music. Now its if u like nas, you hate jay or vice versa. If i like CTE, i gotta hate MMG......its crazy

Na, that was like 06.....popularity is maybe the same as then but seems like the talent is better....Crazy cuz its like mainstream hip hop is all heading in the same direction but yet there is no one that the people really support besides a select few

Corny-ass hater thread. Fuck you bitter niggas, go listen to a artist you like and leave errybody else the fuck alone. We live in a era where artists can drop a classic album on the internet w/ no sample clearance and no record label bullshit......and ya'll complaining.

Truth.

What the fuck are ya'll on? Do you even REMEMBER the era of Ringtone Rap and Snap Music and Laffy Taffy and Post-2004 G-Unit? Fucking Tony Yayo's hot garbage album sold 250,000 first week......stop.

K. Lamar is a one-hit wonder gimmick like Skeelo? Really? Get the fuck outta here. That sounds like the words of another NYC nigga sensitive bout dat Control verse. Like Kendrick can't spit and didn't make the consensus album of the year. Nigga Please.

I can remember different stages of Hip Hop when people considered it at an "all time low". You guys may not remember but around 92/93 people, myself included, were saying Hip Hop was at an all time low.

I saw a old usenet post from like 95 where this nigga sez "HIP HOP IS DEAD" and blames "wack artists" like Notorious B.I.G for ruining it.

hahaha

What else need to be said? There were people that SWORE Wu-Tang was trash when 36 Chambers dropped. "Who the fuck are these wack niggas with the kung fu samples? Man they album sound like a demo tape"

No matter how great Hip-Hop is doing, there will always be some bitter old nigga on the side talking like the music fell off in 1985 or 1992 or 1997 or 2001 or 2005.....take your pick. There were people dismissing Nas as a gimmick rip-off of Rakim when Illmatic dropped for Christ's sake.

"that Cuban Linx shit is trash, I miss the good ol' days." - some nigga in 1995 i'm sure

Hip-Hop right now is more diverse than its EVER been. Its easier to obtain and produce music than its ever been. There's so much good music out there its crazy. If you don't agree, shut the fuck up, clutch your 90s rap albums close to ur chest, and go listen to jazz or summin nigga. I'm tired of hearing you faggots complain. Ya'll like them fundamentalist christians talmbout Jesus coming back on THIS DATE - we been hearing your negative bullshit for DECADES, SHUT THE FUCK UP!!!!!

And if you don't believe there's lots of good rap out there because you haven't heard it on the radio.......kill yourself.

Hip hop is at an all time high because

1. the listener can control what they listen to

2. the artist can make money with limited to no assistance from label

Regardless of how great music might have been in previous eras you always had to depend on the radio/tv you were forced to watch commercials or listen to radio ads. I can listen to free mixtapes without a commercial and i can control what i think is dope i don't need a dj to rely on.

As far as the artist you have artist making great show money and they don't have 1 single or the radio. You have artist who have never had a gold album selling out college arenas. Name any other era in rap where you could be underground but if you save your money right and diversify your bonds in wu tang financial that you could get more money from rap underground than being on the radio?

This post typifies so many 'fans' of the genre, its pitiful ..

What monizzle and swiftness says. If u ask me, hip hop is in a second golden era. It's very diverse and u can get so much music from so many different artists it's ridiculous. So u mean to tell me that this era is worse than 2006-2009? I refuse to believe that.

Its true. Back when Big was around people were saying he was what was wrong with rap music. They said he wasn't underground like Jeru the Damaja or Black Moon. And I can say this with certainty because I was one of those people. I thought the whole Death Row vs Bad Boy beef was just a commercialized, industry thing that didn't have anything to do with real rap (whatever that means) although looking back, the whole Death Row vs Bad Boy beef was kinda manufactured by the machine. Growing up in Boston, for some reason I was supposed to hate everybody in California because Vibe Magazine said so.

Believe it. Back in the 90s, people said that the commercial Bad Boy stuff was the end of rap as we know it. It was too jiggy, the videos were too high budget and the ordinary rap fan couldn't relate. All you gotta do is watch The Lox If You Think I'm Jiggy video and you can just imagine what we were thinking at the time.

WTF are you talking about? How far back are you taking it, because you never had to rely on radio or tv. Hip-Hop started in the underground dun. They didn't even play our music on the radio or tv, yet dude's was still moving units.

They were also getting show money back in the day without all this commercialism bullshit. And demo tapes were still alive and well.

Literally everything you talked about was happening. The improvements of the business is more so due to commercialism (more money being invested in the game) and the evolution in technology, but Hip-Hop was self-made dunny.

They wouldn't have invested in it if it wasn't. They saw dollar signs and ran with it, and now we have this bullshit where it's not about skills anymore.

the gunit era was really bad and the wayne era....not sure if its gotten better or worse, i lean towards worse.

its definitely at an all time low in terms of its impact on mainstream culture. its very niche now. fading.
