On ISIS news, the YPG just finished liberating the town of Manbij. It took close to 3 months of fighting. At this point, the YPG effectively cut off Raqqa from Turkey. ISIS still has some land on the Turkish border but its pretty much standalone now.

They are calling Manbij the secret capital of ISIS. This is where foreign recruits were trained to attack the West. Another huge strategic loss for ISIS, meaning, they will probably be planning some aggressive attacks in Europe.

I heard about some of that, didn't know Manbij was called the secret capital, I heard Sirte of Libya was called that by some journalists. Probably why American generals are so focused on Sirte these days, special forces are there in big numbers now.

ISIS has been a little quiet lately, but if that news on Manbij is true, then yeah, ISIS is probably planning something very brutal.

The thing with Erdogan is he has been trying to cut a deal with Assad for about a year behind doors now. Depending on what type of deal they cut, Assad might stay.

Dont let the breaking of Allepos Siege fool you. The rebels have 1 goal, and that is that if they can take Allepo, they might be able to force the regime to negotiate. Over the last 12 months, Assad retook the momentum on the battlefied and got strong enough to refuse negotiations. All the rebels want is to take some land to force Assad to negotiate. Assad isnt worried about ISIS cause he knows eventually the coalition will finish them off, which is getting closer and closer to happening, he is focused strictly on the rebels and i dont honestly expect the rebels to be able to do much

Considering the alternatives, Erdogan might feel comfortable with Assad staying, but Turkey is still supplying the rebels as far as I've heard. I agree the rebels can't do a whole lot to take Assad down, Russian and Assad overall are winning big against most of the rebels now, ISIS I think is still a threat to Assad's troops but ISIS seems to be on the run in much of its territory in Syria these days. ISIS is resilient but they have pretty much no shot of taking Damascus or most of Aleppo, neither do the rebels.

So no matter how Erdogan may feel personally about Assad, he might understand that there is nothing the west or Sunnis in Syria can do (for now) to take Assad down. Doesn't mean the Syrian civil war will end anytime soon though, too much bitterness for that to happen.

Afghan officials: IS expands presence in restive south

8/15/2016

KANDAHAR, Afghanistan (AP) — The Islamic State group, which has been building a presence in Afghanistan for more than a year, has established a recruitment and training camp in a restive southern province bordering Pakistan, Afghan officials said.

Now officials say the IS operatives have established a headquarters in the district, and are actively recruiting and training locals to join the group as gunmen.

"They have a lot of money. People here are very poor, and that makes them very easy targets for these foreigners," said Atta Mohammad Haqbayan, the director of Zabul's provincial council. He said that he asked central authorities in Kabul for help to drive the IS operatives out of the province —"but no one is listening to us."

Zabul's provincial police chief, Mirwais Noorzai, said the IS operatives in Khak-e-Afghan are well-equipped with satellite communications technology. They have set up camps for training new recruits, he said.

Haqbayan, the provincial council director, said local authorities "have proof they are linked with and are in constant contact with Daesh in Iraq and that they receive funding from them." He used an Arabic acronym to refer to the Islamic State group.

--The article notes that American officials are downplaying the ISIS presence in Afghanistan, but America has been bombing ISIS targets a lot in Afghanistan lately....with the Afghan army already overwhelmed and totally bankrupt fighting the Taliban, them taking on a rich group like ISIS could be a back breaker for them. America's game of wack a mole just got more complicated.

NBC News had some other interesting news earlier this month that I somehow missed regarding the spread of ISIS, it noted that American officials in 2014 said ISIS was operational in about 7 nations, but as of August 2016, it is now operational in 18 or more. While the caliphate is breaking up in Syria and Iraq to a large degree, ISIS actually has more of a worldwide presence now. Not sure what to make of this report, but based on what's going on in Afghanistan, America has a very expensive war coming up. Money and resources that people in Michigan and Milwaukee and other places wish they could have...

New Counterterrorism 'Heat Map' Shows ISIS Branches Spreading Worldwide
http://www.nbcnews.com/storyline/is...ows-isis-branches-spreading-worldwide-n621866

As the U.S. launched more airstrikes Tuesday against ISIS targets in Libya — representing an expansion of the U.S. military operations beyond Iraq and Syria — NBC News has exclusively obtained a map showing the global expansion of the terror group.

The map is part of a classified briefing document received by the White House dated "August 2016" and prepared by the National Counterterrorism Center. It shows a stunning three-fold increase in the number of places around the globe where ISIS is operating.

U.S. State Department documents indicated that in 2014, when the U.S. military began its campaign to destroy the extremists, there were only seven nations in which the fledgling state was operating.

By 2015, according to the State Department's own numbers, there were nearly double that — 13 countries.

The current briefing map shows 18 countries where ISIS is fully operational.

Wow, Turkey and America joined forces against ISIS in Syria today, Turkish troops invaded ISIS territory and with American air support, took over a large border town. Assad, Kurdish groups and Russia aren't happy about it but Turkey still has its troops there. They have been shelling and firebombing Kurdish areas in Syria this week too....

Joe Biden also today said America will remain loyal to Turkey and warned the Kurds to not take on Turkey with violence from this point on, also saying America will cut off all funding to Kurdish groups if they don't retreat to the east. Damn, as I suspected, now even America wants the Kurds to submit to Turkey. As ISIS loses on the battlefield, the Kurdish groups will likely have much of its land taken away from this point on. Erdogan gets another big win militarily and politically, it's unlikely Hillary will act differently toward him

ANKARA, Turkey — The Obama administration will cut all U.S. support for its Syrian Kurdish allies, which it considers the most competent rebel force fighting the Islamic State, if they do not comply with Turkish demands that they withdraw to the east of the Euphrates River, Vice President Biden said here Wednesday.

Turkey likely has more binding agreements with the US, if nothing else.

Yeah but America air raiding the same villages that held Kurdish militias is somewhat surprising to me considering all the aid and weapons they gave them. But you're right that America has agreements with Turkey to back it up as a NATO member, so I should have seen this coming. I just didn't think America would be actively air raiding these areas, Turkey has admitted towns in the border they are clearing out have ISIS and Kurdish militias. And America was very active in the operations according to the Turkish vice president.

Some say there are more Kurdish areas being cleared out then ISIS ones, not sure if that is true.

well, i don't know what's said publicly versus what's said to Kurds off the record... but yeah, Turkey is in NATO and just had all the coup drama, so it seems likely they'll get the favorable treatment.

seems in line with Turkish policy, honestly

Yeah, Turkey isn't gonna stop no matter what, not with Kurdish groups killing so many Turkish cops these past few days.

Turkey can't annoy Assad too much though, it's still his territory officially and he'll need Assad's help with the refugee problems.

Members of the Free Syrian Army chased American soldiers from a town formerly held by ISIS fighters yesterday, and there's video of them chanting death to America as American vehicles leave the town. This is the same Free Syrian Army that has received hundreds of millions of dollars in ammo and weapons.....I wonder how long it will be before America designates the FSA as the next terror group, another group that it helped create, as Americans helped create and develop other terror groups in the past. The Free Syrian Army members are also heard saying Christians have no place among them.....
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/201...orced-to-run-away-from-us-backed-syrian-rebe/

American commandos 'forced to run away' from US-backed Syrian rebels

The fighters scream anti-American chants as a column of pick-up trucks carrying US commandos drives away from them.

“Christians and Americans have no place among us,” shouts one man in the video. “They want to wage a crusader war to occupy Syria.”

Another man calls out: “The collaborators of America are dogs and pigs. They wage a crusader war against Syria and Islam. ”

--So these are the moderate rebels Obama and Hillary are cheering about? Bullshit like this is part of the reason Trump is gaining in the polls now.

America agreeing to give Israel 38 billion dollars over the next ten years this week probably made its reputation in the Middle East much worst then it was already. I'm willing to bet the Free Syrian Army is going to battle it out with American troops someday, they must be feeling bold to publicly videotape themselves chasing American troops out of a town in Syria. Then again, many Free Syrian Army members fought proudly with Al-Qaeda for a very long time before receiving American weapons.

to be fair, i heard a more nuanced version of this...

U.S. Commandos Enter, Leave, and Return to Syrian Town, With Some Help From Friendly Rebels

Who says the United States got nothing for the star-crossed, $500 million train-and-equip program for Syrian rebels that fell apart last year? It apparently bought enough goodwill with one rebel group that they escorted U.S. special forces troops back into the northern Syrian town of Rai on Friday, just hours after they’d been asked to leave by other Syrian rebels.

Those Syrian Arab fighters, who had pushed into Syria from southern Turkey last month with the help of Turkish special forces and American warplanes, accused the Americans of supporting nearby Kurdish forces, who who have emerged as rivals in the hydra-headed fight to retake land from the Islamic State. Washington has openly supported the Kurds in their fight, providing equipment and embedding teams of commandos with them on the front lines in northern Syria, but that’s soured tensions with Turkey of late.

The brief standoff in Rai underscores the competing agendas on the ground as the United States, Turkey, and several Gulf Arab countries pour money and resources into supporting a bewildering range of groups battling ISIS and the regime of Syrian President Bashir al-Assad in the country’s five-year old civil war. Russia has also thrown its military into the fight, nominally to fight terrorists, but also to prop up Assad’s crumbling power.

American largesse with one rebel faction in particular, Liwa Al-Mutasem, seems to have helped defuse a potentially embarrassing situation. The group received two American airdrops of weapons earlier this year, and has managed to consolidate other Syrian Arab rebel groups under its umbrella in northern Syria.

Charles Lister, a senior fellow at the Middle East Institute who has written widely on Syrian rebel groups, told Foreign Policy Friday that fighters from Liwa al-Mutasem accompanied the Americans out of town, then escorted them back in after Turkish officials told the other Free Syrian Army rebels to stand down. The rebels who objected to the American presence have since been moved to other areas of the battlefield.

“These groups got a very stern message from the Turks,” after the Friday incident, Lister said, as “Turkey has realized it is in their interests to have the U.S. involved” on the ground in northern Syria. That’s in part a reflection of gradually improving U.S.-Turkey ties after the summertime coup attempt in Ankara and Istanbul threw a wrench in bilateral relations.

Earlier this year, President Barack Obama approved the deployment of about 300 American special operations troops to Syria, but it’s not clear how many are currently on the ground.

Washington was caught off guard by the FSA’s push into the Syrian border town of Jarablus late last month. Turkish and American military officials had talked about a joint operation in Syria for months, but the original assault took place while the proposal languished at the White House and with no warning to the Americans, according to U.S. officials.

Pointedly dubbed “Operation Euphrates Shield,” the invasion by about 1,000 FSA fighters and Turkish armor and artillery units was aimed not just at pushing ISIS off the Turkish border, but also at preventing Kurdish forces from consolidating control over a contiguous stretch of territory along Turkey’s southern flank.

If the FSA and the Turks — now accompanied by American forces — move further south toward the ISIS stronghold of Bab, they’ll effectively snuff out any remaining Kurdish hopes of uniting strongholds east of the Euphrates with the Kurd enclave to the west of the river.

As ISIS is feeling renewed pressure from the Turkish and American-backed rebels, Washington’s air war has claimed another terrorist leader. The Pentagon announced Friday that a Sept. 7 airstrike near Raqqa killed “Dr. Wa’il”, also known as Wa’il Adil Hasan Salman al-Fayad, who “operated as the minister of information for the terror organization and was a prominent member of its Senior Shura Council,” spokesman Peter Cook said in a statement. The announcement comes just days after American officials announced they had killed Abu Muhammad al-Adnani, spokesman for the group and a key leader for plotting and inspiring external terror attacks.

The American involvement, however small, is another sign that after months of tension between Washington and Ankara following the failed military coup against the government of Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan, relations between the two NATO allies are slowly improving. Vice President Joe Biden visited Turkey last month, and a long of American military brass has traveled to Turkey in recent weeks for talks.

On Friday — the same day that American commandos pushed into Syria — Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. Joseph Dunford met with Turkey’s Chief of the General Staff, Gen. Hulusi Akar before the NATO Military Committee in Chiefs of Staff conference in Split, Croatia, to talk about the fight against ISIS, according to Dunford’s office.
still certainly a poor look

Turkey saved America in that situation, but Turkey can't contain the rebels forever. Good article though, Turkey's power in the region is as powerful as any country out there now. Bad news for the Kurdish groups of course, whose power and lands are collapsing more and more as the weeks go on. America definitely can't tell Turkey what to do now.

American planes "by accident" consistently shot at and bombed Syrian soldiers who were actually fighting ISIS soldiers on the ground. Yes that's correct, Syrian soldiers fighting ISIS were bombed and shot at by American planes last night, 83 Syrian soldiers dead, over 100 were injured. Russian and Syrian govt officials said they were shocked by the attacks and said ISIS soldiers literally benefitted from the attack and even ISIS admits it advanced its positions last night lol, smh at how bad this will look to Syrians in Damascus and Aleppo who support Assad. America will be looked at as a great evil in the Middle East in the Shia world after this attack.
https://www.yahoo.com/news/air-raids-syrian-army-position-kill-30-soldiers-180916393.html

Damascus (AFP) - US-led coalition aircraft hit a Syrian army position in the country's east on Saturday, an armed forces statement said, while a monitor group reported dozens of soldiers dead.

"Warplanes from the American coalition hit one of the Syrian army's positions... near the Deir Ezzor airport," the statement carried by state media said.

Regime ally Russia said 62 Syrian soldiers were killed and at least 100 more wounded in strikes by "warplanes from the international anti-jihadist coalition".

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights monitoring group said at least 83 soldiers were killed in the raids on Jabal Therdeh, southwest of the Deir Ezzor airport, updating an earlier toll of 30 killed.

"This is a dangerous and bold attack against the Syrian state and army, and clear evidence that the United States and its allies support the terrorist group Daesh," the statement said, using an Arabic acronym for IS.

It said the raids had allowed IS to advance on Syrian troops in the area.

--We Americans have a very criminal government, unfortunately. And of course, just as police get away with murder in America, it will likely try to push this under the rug as well. Washington DC is run by criminal warmongers.

seems like a colossal fuck-up, but why are we saying "consistently?" why are you disputing it was an accident?

also, were you this mad when Syrians and Russians INTENTIONALLY hit people fighting ISIS?

I say consistently because Syrian and Russian officials, along with other witnesses, say the American attacks on Syrian soldiers lasted more then 50 minutes. In all honesty, I am not sure if it was an accident or not, America has shown a DISGRACEFUL PATTERN of horrible behavior and massive war crimes in the Middle East over the past 15 years or so. I am not sure if the American cowboys who initiated this attack did it on purpose, it's very possible Americans did this on purpose. Americans are famous for very evil behavior worldwide.

When Syrian and Russian planes bomb innocents, I deplore that too, but let's be honest, America has committed WAAAAAAY more war crimes and atrocities the past few years then Assad or Russia.

so has Syria, and yet i notice you haven't posted anything about the Syrians and/or the Russians hitting an aid convoy.

also, no, America has NOT committed more war crimes than Assad. Russia, it's possible because they haven't been in the ME like that.
