I Just Realized Big Sean Didn't Even Go Gold

The "dethugification" of Hip Hop allowed a lot more talented acts to come into the game (like it or not Big Sean is nicer than at least 80% of the acts to come out in the last 8-10 yrs)....

However only a certain amount of niggas can come into the game without stepping on each others toes.

Big Sean, Wale, and J. Cole will never see A List status till they learn the value of selling a narrative+ back story+definitive image. Wale and Big Sean are NEARLY the same rapper and J. Cole tries to play both sides (be the substance guy and spitter with swag) without being too great at either one.

Look at the greats: They gave listeners pathos to invest in. Em=the angst, black humor, and anger of the ugly side of White America distilled in Hip Hop Form. Pac=the nihilism of the inner city Black Male with socio political awareness (same could be said for Cube as well). Kanye=The frustration of "unappreciated genius" + tragedy+sociopolitical awareness (again), decadence.

Even Drake has a "theme": the pros and cons of newfound celebrity, lost love and moral decay as a result of "the life"....you have to sell something of substance to your audience to be great.

Had Finally Famous had tinges of something deeper than swag rap and the obligatory "I made it/came from generic struggle/rep my city" subject matter, it would have been a great debut to get audiences familiar with Big Sean. But it came across as an album ANYBODY could've made and people aren't interested in cookie cutter acts. Especially in a genre like hip hop where personality is often time the biggest selling point.

Tl; DR version: Sell substance first. Sell out later.

Great post

I've said what you've said repeatedly. The only thing I disagree with is Sean being on Wale or Cole's level. Sean is weak as hell, if we're being honest I would compare him more to Mac Miller than the Drake/Cole/Wale group

i think we can tax that to his age ... i seen like a group of grown men make a youtube video about this just subject about big sean who were also from his city ... and its just big sean is actually still a kid ... a kid in the real world with no real experiences yet ... i remember someone saying that about me when i was his age and trying to rap .... they would always say i can tell your a young rapper ... never knew what the stood for until i truely had some substance in my life that i could actually talk about .............

Big sean isn't really a big time artist.

He played at my no name college a while back.

He is basically a nobody. Only the Internet talks about him

US Billboard Rap Songs. Everything else you said is irrelevant.

And btw, platinum is still platinum. Eminem, Drake, Wayne, Jay, and Kanye are still coming out the gate with 400-500k plus and hitting plat later on. The only difference is that them rappers that suck aren't also going plat.

so number 1 rap song>>>number 1 overall???

ok.

When I talk about a young early twenties above average lyricist....that heavily reps a major US urban hub with a high black population...thats signed to one of the vanity labels of one of the biggest names in rap...thats been grinding since about 07/08ish and has a successful mixtape series...and raps about everything from relationships to swag to clothes/shoes to somewhat conscious subject matter....

Who am I talking about? Big Sean or Wale?

Its not so much their style and flow thats interchangeable. It's their image. They fill the same niche.

Nah, breh, Wale is better than Sean in every facet of rap. He has better lyrics, flow, and makes QUALITY music. Sean's music is disposable, the only song thats worth shit on that "Finally Famous" album is Memories 2, and thats more due to John Legend than anything. Wale drops great songs like "90210" and "Shades". Wale and the rest of MMG make Grown man music, Big Sean's music is for middle/high school kids.
